in the morning I will get a good set of pictures of loaded 550 Gibbs jacketed softpoint and cast RFN sent to Boomie, and have him post them here. My gunsmith assures me by time we get back from the Balloon Fiesta in ten days he will have the rifle ready to test fire.

Just T-H-A-T close to reality...
I need to take a line or two and thank Neal (RNS)for all of this. Last year he gave me some of this brass and look what has happened...?

I'm relatively new to the forum, so don't hack at me for asking, but does anyone in this forum have a 500 Jeffery? I'd love to see some ballistics for it, and I'd like to see a pic comparing the Gibbs and the Jeff. To my understanding the Jeff is a shorter case but actually has a greater case capacity b/c of it's relatively larger girth. So, if anyone has a Jeff or knows about the Jeff, I'd like to know and see more.

Sorry about the non sequitur guys; I'm not trying to jack the thread. I'm just interested in the comparison between the Gibbs and the Jeff.

Actually, the gibbs case has a larger water cpacity than the Jeffrey; Its just that the Jeffrey was loaded to higher pressures. Using moern brass and actions, the Gibbs has a 200 fps advantage over the jeffries.

That's gonna be a real hammer, Rich. Forest, you can get up to 2550 from a .505 with 600 grain lead core bullets and Jamison thick-webbed brass (assuming you're willing to load to 58,000 psi; 39,160 is listed max). I'll bet with the extra piston area one could get as high as 2650-2700. OUCH! shocker

Harry, that is what I was thinking after shooting your 505 loaded with 600gr @ 2400fps.

We are looking at T-minus 30 hours on lift off on the 550.

Yes, I think 600gr jacketed bullets can reach 2700fps, if your mind is weak, and your shoulder is up to the task.

I will be starting load work with 600gr jacketed and some VihtaVuori Oy. 125gr charge of N160/N165/N170. The N160 load broke 2100fps with a 650gr cast gas-checked bullet in my 505 Gibbs. Up in bore diameter, down 50gr in bullet weight, should be a safe starting point. Besides, the VVOy was at the front of the storage box.

With 2700 ft/sec and 600 grain bullets, you are certainly getting into big boy toy land and big boy recoil with 9700 ft. lbs of energy. Sounds great!!

Another day to mark on the calendar: NEI shipped me two bullet moulds, one in 550(entirely new caliber for them, kudos for making a cherry) and their heavyweight 577, 840gr. Tomorrow morning is casting party for both. I do not know what the 550 will weigh, let y'all know about noon.

NEI redefines the term heavy bullet for caliber!

Sometime this afternoon, Boomie is going to post a picture for me to put these two super-heavies in perspective.

The 550 caliber mould drops bullets at 881(!) grains out of wheel weights.
The 577 caliber mould drops bullets at 1010(!!) grains out of wheel weights.

Thanks to Beartooth Bullets website and Ballisticians Corner section I was able to postulate MV/ME and recoil in terms of foot-pounds and recoil impulse (speed) I think it will take me a couple months to work up the ladder...

13 pound rifle.
.577 BME: 750gr bullet....2050fps...100ft/lbs of recoil at 22fps, ME=7,000 ft/lbs .577NE 3" factory load
" 2475fps...150ft/lbs of recoil at 27fps ME=10,204ft/lbs

.577BME: 850gr bullet....2050fps...117ft/lbs of recoil at 24fps ME=7,934ft/lbs replicates MV of 577 factory
" 2350fps...164ft/lbs of recoil at 29fps ME=10,426ft/lbs

.577BME: 1010gr bullet....2000fps...151ft/lbs of recoil at 27fps ME=8,973ft/lbs
" 2225fps...193ft/lbs of recoil at 31fps ME=11,105ft/lbs

I am not sure the last figure for the 1010gr bullet (seven to the pound)is reachable...somewhere the famous quote of Robgunbuilder comes into play.

I will put the numbers in for the 550 as soon as I get some actual firing data this afternoon.
Pray for me.
