shocker

DUDE, You're the man! In all seriuosness, I'm curious what kind of velocity you're looking to push those 3500 grainers at?

I don't even think you'd have to shoot it, just hold it up so the elephant, buffalo, or whatever
can see that cannon and they'll probably die of a heart attack Big Grin

Wow, good luck with this and keep us posted.

How does one handle 500 lbs of recoil?

Kid, that comes out to 594 ftlbs of recoil. Thats almost 4 times are 4 bore doubles!!. It looks like my 2 bore black powder gun is going to come in at about 25 lbs. Thats light enough for me!!

Butch Searcy has the ability to build that gun, but I do not know if he would want to.

You could also commission it from H&H. It would take 4 or 5 years and $200K, but they would get it done.

At almost 70,000 ft lbs of energy, that gun had better be about 100 lbs to keep from killing yourself with recoil.

My mistake, it is a mere 60,000 ft.lbs of energy, not 70,000. A 100 lb rifle will only have 354 ft.lbs of recoil. Thats a lot.

Interesting thought "death by recoil"...

I wonder about what the threshold is? Wink

Doesn't the 12 gauge from hell satisfy the ballistic requirement of 3500 grains at 1400 fps?

And wouldn't that be the easier route?

A twenty pound 2 bore, huh?

quote:
"Among other weapons, I had an extraordinary rifle that carried a half-pound percussion shell--this instrument of torture to the hunter was not sufficiently heavy for the weight of the projectile; it only weighed twenty pounds: thus, with a charge of ten drachms of powder, behind a half-pound shell, the recoil was so terrific, that I was spun round like a weathercock in a hurricane. I really dreaded my own rifle, although I had been accustomed to heavy charges of powder and severe recoil for many years.

None of my men could fire it, and it was looked upon with a species of awe, and was named "Jenna el Mootfah" (child of a cannon) by the Arabs, which being far too long a name for practice, I christened it the "Baby;" and the scream of this "Baby," loaded with a half pound shell, was always fatal. It was far too severe, and I very seldom fired it, but it is a curious fact, that I never fired a shot with that rifle without bagging: the entire practice, during several years, was confined to about twenty shots. I was afraid to use it; but now and then it was absolutely necessary that it should be cleaned, after lying for months loaded. On such occasions my men had the gratification of firing it, and the explosion was always accompanied by two men falling on their backs (one having propped up the shooter), and the 'Baby' flying some yards behind them. This rifle was made by Holland, of Bond Street, and I could highly recommend it for Goliath of Gath, but not for men of A.D. 1866."

Sir Samuel Baker, The Albert N'Yanza, Great Basin of the Nile

In another book, Baker talked about getting nosebleeds and headaches after every shot.

One drachm is equal to 60 grains. So little "Baby" was eating 600 grains of powder for every shot.

60,000 at the muzzle and with an estimated .290 B.C., @ 600 yards it'll be smacking 12,700!! Roughly what a T Rex starts with!

that is exactly the size of a golf ball.

Max golf ball dia is 1.68"

that would make for a looooong drive!

bring yer 1 bore to the golf range and go for hole in ones with a good scope Big Grin

cheap plinking Big Grin

A golf ball weighs approx 700 grains.

A 20 lb 1 bore should be easy to shoot 700 grains @ 3000 fps.

Golf suddenly just got more interesting...

Tom,

I've scheduled you for prophylactic neurosurgery - clearly you have something loose up there already. Big Grin

Failing that, I have you scheduled for orthopedic surgery to reconstruct your shoulder, clavicle, jaw and neck.

I'll hold on to your big-bore collection while you recover from the surgery Wink

In all seriousness, I would like to lend you my HANS device for the first time you touch that monster off. Eeker

From the shoulder I wouldn't fire max load
from my 2/bore case either, and load above is medium presssure, and the high pressure
max is much more than I posted above at
70k psi. Would get 5000 gr slug close to
3000. But hope to make mine a smoothbore and
fire long sided, deep hollowbase lead slugs of
about 2300 grains, then recoil be little more
manageable. Ed

So how do you handle recoil. For example, I weigh 125 lbs, my 45-120 recoils about 75 ft-lbs, and lifts me off my front foot even when leaning way into it. I don't know what I could do to help get a quicker follow-up shot.

Does this mean you would need to weigh about 700 lbs to shoot the 2 bore and not end up on your back?

Tyler, you need to put on some weight to shoot the really big stuff. I shoot 4 bore doubles,700 nitro and 700 AHR, and 600 overkill with pretty stout loads and my feet never move. Of course, I am anchored by my 375 lbs. That probably makes a difference.

Hubel, get a video of the recoil if you could. With the loads you posted, guessing 200 grains of powder, I see over 400 ft lbs of recoil! I would like to see your stance before firing off the big stuff.
