Montana "PH" what chambering? Login/Join

After about 4 years of waiting myself it looks like the "PH" action may come available early next spring '08 {for the model '99 PH action}. I've already decided on the chambering for mine, but was interested in what others had in the works for theirs. Rodney.

There are some of us working to get some
with bigger barrel thread to match the
increase in the size of the bolt and action,
for large calibers. I want to do my 700HE
3.25" on one and few others do too. Ed

I forgot about these! I still have one on order. I don't know what I'll do with it though. I was thinking 416 Rigby but I'll probably have a 416 Rem. by then. I guess I'll decide when or if I get it in my hands.

Bolt diameter is .805"- Mag is 4"
Action is 1/8 inch more diameter than
Enfield or Ruger, but barrel threads they have
were 1/16 in smaller than Mauser or Enfield.
Bolt and mag will do big cases, and some of us
want to use barrels to go akong with
big cases. We want 1.2" x 16 thread.

Some thoughts...

Since this is a serious big action it screams something big...it is a P.H. action after all inferring a stopper gun.

if you are going full custom might as well do something that is not a factory chambering.

A 416 Rigby is great but there are plenty of 416's

470 Mbogo
500 A2
550 Magnum
585 Nyati
577 Trex
600 O.K.

and for the pioneering that handsome cart below.
Plenty of good brass and load development will be done in a few months. we should have brass for about 25 guns before the next brass order.

Go big! but to each his own and thine self be true.

Just some thoughts and whatever is chosen i am sure will bring the shooter joy.

I thought this might be an important topic to bring about becuase Montana looks as though they may just start a production of the "PH" action as shown on their website. The only change really being needed is to the 1.2 x16tpi as suggested by Ed. This is an important change and every one who has ordered one should contact the company and express their interest this change. The added barrel diameter at thread engagement only adds to strength and versitility. R.

I think the larger threads gives them more value...in terms or resale...not that anyone would except for those who are getting more than one or two.

Ed, if you know, how does the bolt diameter of the Montana PH compare with the CZ, Heym, and Granite Mountain actions? Would it be sufficent for a .505 Gibbs?

The bolt on my CZ 550 measures .700" diameter and .955" across the lugs. The 505 Gibbs has a rim diameter of .635" . This combination works but I really like the massive bolt for the "PH" at .805" . Mine will be based on the Gibbs case in .550". R.

I'll switch my order to the "Hubel Super-size" after I finish here.

Hey Boomie...go find us a case that we can make the 885 BME on. Are we talking 50 BMG with a belt and slight body taper here?

Wow .885 would be cool! Around here it's like whose got a bigger board with a bigger nail in it. I like very much what I have read about the .550 and believe this will make an excellent rifle and maybe at about the limit of what I will be able to recover from in the recoil department. R.

885???

my new limit is 585...

i think the 585 is the best mega bore due to more bullets.

shooting hardened shotgun slugs in a bolt has merrit sabot or otherwise

Thanks for the .416 Barrett dimensions and cartridge piture, boomie.

A cartridge with a .804" rim diameter should go into a bolt diameter of .805":

The .416 Barrett flat out creams the .408 Chey-Tac, but both of them require a 50-BMG sized action unless you want to handicap them down to .45-70 CUP's. rotflmo

Even the .416 Rigby can beat that.
Boomie you are just being silly, as usual.

don't start rip...at his age you may not have known (as they said in the Army) s--t from shinola.

This is a learning experience for him, trying to find out "why not..." is better for you than why something does work.

Please, assume Boomie doesn't know much about big bores. He owns a 30-06 and a lever 45-70; and has not yet started reloading.

Play Yoda to his young Jedi for a couple of weeks and feel the satisfaction of sharing some of your vast knowledge in the shooting/reloading areas. We'd all appreciate that, and it's a good feeling to pass on some of the things you learned (good and bad) from your decades in this arena.

Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost.

The biggest you can go with a belted
bmg case, which is what my 700s are,
is 12ga(.729"), with only .012" taper,
a real minimal taper in that length of
case. When I did the 700 I thought about
12ga but didn't like that little of
taper to the sides. To use my 700
short case on the PH I have the rim as
.770" and the belt as .790", to allow case
to feed into action and chamber.Ed.

Dave, the Montana website is now advertising the "PH" at $850-. It's my understanding that if your one of the many that have been waiting for some time that there will be a discount. Afterall wasn't the original price $525 or $595 can't remember? Check out their website at www.montanarifleman.com .R.

My understanding was if you contacted the new owners before, I think it was July 1st, let them know you were still interested you would get a discount on the purchase.

Anyway 1 will be a 50 cal, was thinking .510 on a Gibbs case. Possibly a 50-08

The second will be a 700HE

I also have been waiting for the PH to come along. I have a LH action coming and will be chambering it to 416 Rigby. I am also looking at Serengeti for stocking. This will be my first custom and probably my most expensive i will ever have. I will also have NECG sights and have the reciver milled for weaver style rings.

As I said before if at first they'd have priced them a couple hundred higher thus having the means to just get them done 2 years ago,
a whole bunch of us would be shooting
the real bigger bores by now. I'm 67 and
Lord I want to see more 700HE 3.25" guns
out there, than there are Nyatis, Trexs,
and 700NEs total, before I go.I think price
will be about 850, but you can still build a
700HE for 2 grand, with capability to get
14-15,000 ft lbs if you want. The other big
fancy actions out there are 3-4
times as much making a finished gun cost
5 grand or more.Ed

I placed my order years ago and am still waiting. I hope it finally happens. I should post pics of my .600 and .700 RLG,s built on a Full length.50 BMG case but with no belt. The shoulder on the .700 is pretty small, about .020 but headspaces just fine. The .600 has a really substantial shoulder. It is possible to take a neck annealed .50BMG case and fire form it to either the .600 or .700 in one shot with 65grs of Bulleseye with cornmeal and soap closing the case. Makes quite a Bang but out pops a perfect .700 RLG. The .700 drives a 1000 gr bullet to well over 3100fps with a case full of RL25. Mine was built on a .50BMG Mcmillan repeater action and would hold and feed 2 down one in the pipe. I know of another .700 case that was a shortened .50BMG with a rebated rim that was actually stuffed into a M98 mauser action. It was supposedly successful although I never actually learned what the claimed ballistics were. The whole gun that I built weighed 16 lbs and I could easily shoot it off hand. Great for breaking rocks with. I've always wanted to rebarrel Barret M82 semi-auto to one of these monsters. It would be a snap to do.-Rob
