I believe a 458 Ruger would have too narrow of a shoulder to be widely accepted as a DG cartridge. The Lott is a better design to risk your life on.

Rip has a photo of a 458 Ruger cartridge on this thread-

They ought to take jeffeosso's 500 AR and neck it down to .458. That would give enough shoulder.

The 10.75x68 has less shoulder.
Look up the 458 AR.

no no no no no!!
Its based on the Rigby case...
Instead a much wiser solution would be to go with Jeffes 458AR. More than enough shoulder and will work perfect in the same action as the 375 and 416 Ruger!!!!

i doubt the 458 ruger becomes a factory round ... heck, i even doubt that the 458 AccRel will .. in the case of the ruger, its a pretty cutting edge shoulder .. even though it has more or less the same as my 470AR .. which works fine ... on the 458 ... if someone wanted to take it public, i would be all for it. the 458 AR, at arms length, is larger than a lott in capacity, uses a standard length action, and common brass ... and has headstamped brass .... and, like the 308 norma and 358 norma, they are all using the same grind reamer, from the same source!

Yes I think Ruger will come out with a 458 Mag. They might have to come up different stock.

I was just curious if any one had heard or know anything. Is there a need probably not since 458 win mag works in standard action length, but just curious.

I was wondering the same and raised the question earlier. Ruger appears to be withholding the 458WM from all of their guns - Not in the No1, nor an Alaskan or African. Since, they set up a pretense of a need for a standard length 375 and 416 it seems odd they dont see the same "need" for a 458, unless they had a plan. Then there is no 338WM in the Alaskan either. The other explanation is they want to force a take it or leave the Alaskan with Ruger cartridges only.

I still dont see any Alaskans in my foreseeable future. I sure wont be buying any 458 Rugers either, if that should be what this is all about.

Would it be better called a 404Ruger?

I guess the folks a Winchester must be genius. They figured a way to fit 375HH,416Rem,458Lott into the M70 action. I would imagine it did cost at least an extra $1.63 per gun in manufacturing costs.

Now, if we had a 577Ruger, that would get my attention! BOOM

Hasn't the .458 Ruger been done in the form of the .460 G & A Short?
Anyone know of a synthetic replacement stocm for Ruger's .375 Hawkeye , one that doesn't have the big hook pistol grip?

I'd agree....it seems they aren't exactly setting the world on fire with the 416 Ruger.

Personally, I'd prefer the 416 over the .458 any day!
