The .395 Tatanka was started around the idea of getting a bullet made by GSC. It was the .395/340-grain HV, copper hollowpoint.
I finally killed something with it.

prof242, aka Max, scooped that with the .395 Ruger Max. He killed a cow elk with Macifej's .395/310-grain VeloHex Brass SHARRC "Hexploding" hollowpoint. Works a lot like Saeed's Walterhog. thumb

Hopefully I will take a deer next weekend with VeloHex. Gotta stick to seniority rules. Wink

A big-bodied, small antlered, 8-pointer-wannabe, basket-racked, 2-1/2 year-old buck was slain 1/2 hour after I got into the tree on opening day of modern gun season in Kentucky, today. Deer near Nebo, KY may be a subspecies of the white tail deer called Rackis basketus.

.395 Tatanka aka 40-07:
340-grain GSC HV at about 2750 fps MV,

Entrance wound outside of onside of chest:

Entrance wound inside of onside of ribcage:

Exit wound inside of off side of ribcage:

Exit wound, outside of offside of chest:

Frontocephalic view of this specimen of Rackis basketus:

Q-sign: The deer was shot at about 40 yards range, through the heart, transecting the mitral valve and exploding a chunk out of both left ventricle and left atrium. A triangle of lung was sticking out the offside as he ran 50 yards as if merely spooked by the noise of the shot. Then he went from full gallop mode to dead bug mode with all four legs pointing skyward in an instant as he crossed the 50-yard dash line. He slid into home plate on his back!. Big Grin

Dorsal view of same specimen of Rackis basketus

Meat processing in Kentucky: We train our women to hunt and process game before puberty. This is good preparation for a future in politics, as state governor, vice president, or president. Big Grin

Another aspiring politician learning the ropes:

Thanks, Jay.
Just trying to do my part to help prevent human fatalities from highway deer strikes (a man and deer died together on the highway last week, nearby), to keep the deer herd healthy by properly managed harvesting of meat, and to train future politicians.

Thanks, Canuck.
I still have not sanded off the saggy gray epoxy and paint from this MPI stock, and repainted it with a smoother "hammered finish" brown paint, with the gritty texture paint in brown on the grip panels only ... but I shall. Too many projects!

Haven't been able to get on the net as much I would like, but will try harder. My hunting season this year has gone down the tubes, but next year 7-17 June 2009, I'll be in Namibia!

If only that deer knew how honored it was to be killed with such a special cart/caliber.

Congrats for taking a concept from the chatroom to the butcher shop!!!

Thanks y'all!

boom stick brings up a "special" point:

A "special" cartridge and bullet, yes, a World First, but was the deer a "Special Olympics" deer, incapable of appreciating the uniqueness of his harvest?

Big body, big neck, small head and antlers, sort of like Walter:

Heads and tails aligned for comparison. Walter Deer has the huge hole in his offside. With butts aligned, Walter Deer's head sticks out farther:

Max,
Are you going to take a .395 Ruger Max or a 400/395 Nitro Express to Namibia? thumb
Surely something bigger than a .338 WSM?

Has your "Lillie Langtry" 400/395 Nitro Express Ruger No.1 made any progress?

Thanks, Grains.
You know this deer was shot in the same county that is home to the second largest Klan operation in the country.

Those are some mentally and socially retarded folks that may have Walter Deer genes in their woodpiles.

There is currently a suit trying to shake down those Krazy Klan Klowns, "special people."

We can use all the legal help we can get down here. Have you thought of volunteering with The Southern Poverty Law Center? Wink

RIP,
My gunsmith took some guiding jobs and has not been in his shop in three weeks. At least that is what I was told by someone in the shop. Since I can't go there (way too far away at the moment), I'm having a friend check on progress.

Max,
Good luck with Lillie. Should be a beauty. thumb

Walter Deer was a biggun for such a small rack.
His carcass butchered to this stage weighed 160 lbs. I think he was well over 200 lbs on the hoof.

Above is one of Walter's smaller brothers, practicing the most extreme form of the birth control, that works for the real Walter: Nudity.
Real Walter (Tonto to Kimosabe Saeed) has only to remove his trousers and women flee, even when he his wearing his finest Victoria's Secrets underneath.

This is what those GSC bullets looked like at various velocities, max being about like the impact velocity on Walter, and making a dent in the bottom of the third 5-gallon water bucket laid longways, end to end:

Walter Deer load: .395/340-grain @ 2745 fps MV
