BASA, the Big Bore Association - Southern Africa (www.bigbore.org) would appreciate historical, technical, reloading (all known propellants from Accurate to Vihtavouri including Somchem) and performance information on the cartridges below for use in future issues of its full colour, premium quality, Big Bore Journal magazine and its data compilation guides published from time to time. It will be greatly appreciated if Accuratereloading forum members would be so kind as to:
1. Put BASA in touch with anybody reloading for these cartridges;
2. Spread this request through all internet forums and associations with a view of soliciting the info.

All contributions will be acknowledged. People with info can contact the BBJ editor direct at africanhunter@bigbore.org:

Pierre,
I would join your organization to subscribe to your fine journal if I could do it simply with a credit card. Last time I checked it required a wire transfer of funds for a tiny amount of money. That is an impulse stopper. I do have one of your journals and digital access to some other of your materials thanks to another fan of yours. Excellent stuff. Even if your middle name is VD. Wink

I have some good data on the 470 Capstick I can get back with later. I'll post again to keep the thread alive.

Are you not interested in the 500 A-Square, just the .510 Wells? The 500A2 is simply MORE of the same as the .510 Wells. Other similar cartridges predate and postdate the .510 Wells, though I guess the "Wells" name adds a bit of charm. The 500A2 would be the most popular nowadays, in this bracket. I've got plenty of data on the 500A2 also.

Hopefully Neal Shirley will find time to share the .550 Magnum data specifics along with the velocity and pressure data on two different bullet weights he has unveiled here recently.

You might be interested in the new 577 Belted Magnum Express that is a cart currently under development. Basicly a 577 Nitro in size but for a bolt gun based on the 505 Gibbs case.

Jeffeosso. I have not received the PM yet but I am looking forward to it. Will let you know if I don't get it. All information is welcome on any big bore cartridge. We are at this stage just focussing on the ones with a long African history and a broad user/support base, but we will get round to the new developments soon. It is important to BASA to stay updated.

RIP. It's not my middle name which is VD - it is first part of my surname. Hell! And I only cotton onto why my sex life is so quiet after 49 years! Going to lawyers for change tomorrow.
The cost of a credit card facility here in Mbekistan is about US$ 65 per month last time we checked and BASA does not do that amount of credit card deals a month. But we are growing and if you look at the new website you will see that it is vastly improved Should be able to justify a credit card system soon.
Looking forward to .470 Casptick info. Send the .500 A-Square stuff as we have locals (Carl Labuschagne) who uses it. I also hope Neal will share

Pierre,
Glad you took the Van Der joke as intended.
470 Capstick:

With so many toys in my chest to play with, I cut to the chase on loads.

First a survey of two sources from manuals.

Nick Harvey of Australia:
(23" barrel of unspecified twist, probably a 1:10" since made by A-square)
Notice the change in powders going from starting load to max load on the 600-grainer, single line entry in the table below.

A-Square manual data Any Shot You Want:
(26" barrel with 1:10" twist)
No errors here:

My rifle is a Winchester M70 with 26" McGowen 4140 barrel of 1:10" twist, probably the same make of barrel used by A-Square. You can compare my velocities to the A-Square data FWIW:

Now what I settled on from my trials of IMR-4064.
Iron sights at 100 yards:

And H4895 Extreme, also available as the Aussie ADI offering.
2.5X Leupold at 50 yards:

84 grains of IMR-4064 gives just over 2200 fps with most 500-grain bullets in a 26" barrel. It should be very accurate and I would have shown that had I used a scope.

85 grains of H4895 Extreme gives over 2350 fps in a 26" barrel with most 500-grain bullets.

Note the North Fork bullets are now .475 instead of .474.

The newer .475 North Fork Cup Point (semi-soft) and FP Solid were tested in my friend's Custom Shop Winchester M70 Big Five 470 Capstick.
This 24" barrel is also a 1:10" twist made by Winchester, may be a little loose as it keyholed with the .474" bullets but made nice round holes and small groups with the .475" bullets:
North Fork CP and FP 500-grainers of .475 caliber:
85 grains of H4895 Extreme
CCI 250 primer
A-Square brass
2297 fps
24" barrel

Powder lots vary. My results with H4895 were much closer to the A-Square data than were my results with IMR-4064. I am also using different brass and bullets, etc.

RIP. Thanks for that .470 Capstick stuff. Appreciated. I happened to have used the late Peter Capstick's .470 - the first one made. I am bit too electronically challenged to insert the photos but if anybody is not scared of contracting VD by taking my hand through the steps I could probably do it. Interestingly enough - Superior Ammo made us cartridges for it using Barnes bullets. Since the cannelure was cut for .470 NE and not .470 Capstick the bullets pulled out - jamming magazine after 2nd shot. I informed Superior Ammo who then apparently cut another groove to prevent recurrence! That could have gone ugly!

You can also drive 3/4 oz sabot slugs to 4000 fps if you want to, then switch back to 2 3/4 birdshot if a quail wanders by.Yes its real and yes it works.
