Jeez, it's been so quiet over here lately. We need some lively discussion.

What the best bullet for buff in your 45-70?

Gees Dave, that's a wicked thing to do.

I would have thought with all the bullet testing that it was obvious ?

Oh, I forgot, the 45/70 doesn't go fast enough to kill big game Big Grin sofa

I shot one once with a 420 Cast Performance in a guide gun, well actually I shot it twice as the first round bounced and glanced off the shoulder causing an ugly time in between, finally a good thru the lungs shot and he was down in 30 yds. Might have done better with todays bullets, but 8 yrs ago that's what I had in my hands at the moment. Not enough bullet, and not enough cartridge. Only adequate if considering the perfect shot.

I will never shoot another buff with 45/70, but if I was in the bush with a 45/70 I would be toting around some of those 330 gr Barnes Banded Solids!

I must sometime take my super shorts on a buffalo shoot! 50 and 458! Now that would be fun!

By the way Dave, my super shorts are the same size as a guide gun in length and weight and damn sight easier to shoot. The 458 Super Short is going to be a tiny little sledgehammer!

We have been looking at that pretty serious on the TBP thread here and I think that a 458 caliber barrel needs to be minimum of 1:14 to stabilize most good solids for terminal penetration, 1:12 would begin to stabilize even less than optimum meplats, and RIP believes 1:10 would do a jam up job for that. Now most of our 45/70 barrels are 1:18 and 1:20. For expanding bullets it really makes no difference for terminal penetration. For solids it makes a big difference in terminal stability. One can do the slower twist rates, but you need a reasonable size meplat to stabilize, along the lines of 65% of caliber or better for slower twists.

This is still under study, but this is very close I believe.

Somebody....maybe it is DumbAss Bullets, makes a 25 caliber/87 grain Sabot for the 45/70...

Buffs know about this and basically die from fear before a shot is fired...saves on ammo beer
