Well as a thank you for some work I did for his daughter here in the states the gentleman that I hunted with in Namibia has asked me back to spend some time looking for a larger Kudu and to take a Cape Buffalo.

I have been keeping him informed about my 400PDK. He liked the 280 version I had used in 2007. He said it was plenty big and I didn't need to worry about head stamp.

The 400PDK allows me to load 5 in my MKX. Current testing with Hornady 400gr DGX allow me a comfortable no pressure issue very accurate 2250ffps. Is this enough power for a buffalo?? As you can tell I'm out of my element here.

If this will work what bullet(s) would you suggest? The bore is .411. I've shot a couple hogs with the DGX but have no recoveries only pass through. Actually one passed through 2 200# hogs.

As usual just my $.02

I'm no expert but I think that rig would be plenty for black death. In fact, you'll be producing velocities and energy similar to a 450-400. Plenty of buff have been taken with that rifle.

If the DGX is shooting well, that's the one I would use. I have no experience with the DGX, having shot one buff with the older Hornady soft. That bullet disinegrated but still put the buff down in 80 yards with no follow necessary.

As always, bullet placement is key.

OK since I'm 200fps over Hornady Factory 450/400s I believe I've got my mind around my 06 based case getting enough velocity. Any 450/400 shooters have comments as to bullets?

Key issue now is getting this piece of Bastogne finished. Would hate to take a trip to Namibia and risk taking pictures of the rifle in its Hogue stock. Big Grin

You'll never finish that stock in time so you better just send it to me so I can put my .400 project in it.

I'm still on the fence!
A 400 Whelen barrel stamp is very appealing but the added performance of your chambering is almost too good to ignore.
Whats a guy to do?

Woodleigh's, Swifts, North Fork's and, if they make one, Trophy bondeds. All should serve you well.
