for those who have not read it.

rich...do you feel the 400 hawk calling you... Big Grin

i think the longer 411 express (a 2.6ish 06' basic brass necked to 411 go to z-hats website) would be even better for heavy bullets but i dont think you would need anything more than north forks 360 gr softs. mike at northfork said he would make solids once he gets a good slug from a ruger 450/400.

or what about no or less body taper and have a larger shoulder? headspace off the body taper and no shoulder?

i think someone needs to neck down the 10.75x68 brass to the 411 and have a happy medium. 411-10.75x68 boom stick is conceptualized! any takers??? rebarrel yer 10.75x68 someone please Wink lets call it the 411 boom stck brain fart # 3534265 animal

guns and wildcatting are both diseases and i got both bad killpc

I have an order in for exactly the pair you are describing, a 375 Flanged Magnum and a 450-400, 3". I specified 9-9,5 lbs. for the weight. Mine will have the scope bases milled into the rib. Now when does it get here????????? ???????

Will,

Thats as nice and polite a response I could come up with. I agree with your thoughts on Taylor, But remember, he would toss in his grave at the thought of using your rifle for elephants.(another smiliey, if I knew how to put one here)

lb404,

I'm too dense apparently to see the point.

While I enjoy JPK's enthusiasm, I cannot agree with the notion that 416's are not adequate. There are past cullers/present PH's that have individually taken more elephants than the sum of all the experts here have taken or ever will take that use the 416's.

I see it as my duty to keep JPK on the straight and narrow. Smiler

I don't see the point either.

And I wouldn't ever argue that a 416, 450/400, 404 or even 375 isn't adequate, just that on the rifle weight/recoil/bullet weight/velocity spectrum that it isn't ideal, imo. The list of PH's and game warden's that used 416's, 450/400's, 404's or 375's is long and distinguished. But then, the list of those who used more rifle is even longer and equally distinguished.

For my part, without ever forgetting that Will has a hell of a lot more experience than I do, I feel compelled to remind him that "his father", John Taylor, much preffered the 450/470 class of double rifles to a bolt rifle. Cool

John Taylor was also forever going on about avoiding "cheap factory made bolt action rifles." He'd probably bolt upright in his grave at the thought of hunting elephants with an 8lb Model 70 in 416 Taylor with a plastic stock, though he would thuroughly approve of the aperture sight on Will's rifle. Wink

And don't let Will's affection for his 416 Taylor make you forget that he is trying to figure out how to have his cake and eat it too. He has been actively seeking a .458" rifle with sufficient case capacity to reach 2300fps, in a regular non magnum length action at light weight without too brutal recoil. Tall order, and I hope he can put it together. cheers

So far as keeping me on the straight and narrow, good luck Will. Geez, I'm shooting a 458wm double rifle, a real misfit if there ever was one. Big Grin

JPK

I editted this post adding the smiley's etc. I think that now that I know how to use them that I'm getting carried away.
