I have been thinking on a .416 wildcat cartridge and a name like that is a tribute to the legendeary ph and .416 enthusiast Harry Selby.

But what brass shall i go for, shoulder angle etc.

I havent got a clue on that yet.

Or .416 Ruark perhaps, perhaps the Nyati looks upon me with other emotions then? cheers

How about opening up the new 375 Ruger to 416 with no other changes. If you don't I'll call it the 416 Blunt. Wink

ruger case necked to 416 40 degree shoulder trimmed at 2.1" cal length neck same ruger taper. 400 gr bullets @ 2150fps or for easy feeding 20 degree shoulder that is enough energy to qualify for d.g. 4,107 ft lbs energy and will go in short actions

Excuse me..
But,
It seems very unlogical to name a Wildcat .416 cartridge after Harry Selby. thumbdown

I know him very well and he wouldn't like it.
His "SKITINI" is the .416 Rigby!

However, there are soon another "Selby" cartridge coming up, developed and designed by Hary Selby and Ken Stewart Wink

nah, its coffee...cant sleep...drank too much too late

dont wory i renamed the line...

the "ruger short mags" have the same capacity as the wsm's because of the minimal body taper of the ruger case! dancing (caffeine)

CRYBABY

That was just a suggestion on a cartridge.... what have i done....(cry)

I thought that it would be fine with the name on a cartridge named in his honor,

The .375 ruger is a case i`m considering, cause that is the one with least hassle to make something out of.

The name search goes on ...

How about;
.416 Eidsvold
.416 Fenrisulven

There must be a strong old Viking name you could use?

.Not Loke anyway that will be a treacherous round which you will never depend on Big Grin

This will take some planning and figuring out but also a feasible project.

Should be Mercury recoil reducer!

I think that a decent amount of Dry Marini reduces more FELT recoil than a Mercury recoil reducer, else one could go for only Gin (Plymouth of course)

I just got the metal work back from Jim Brockman on mine..It is a Mauser 24 in 375 Ruger case necked up to .416 and I call it the .416 Ruger. My next project is the 423 Ruger.

I suppose several others have been built also.

Ray,
What do you expect the .423 Ruger to run out the muzzle at for speed?

Hey Ray,
What barrel length on the new .416 Ruger? 24 inches? Or is that a VZ24 or FN24 Mauser with a 26" barrel? I know you are not afraid of longer barrels. Wink

Would y'all agree to estimate the .416 Ruger to have 103.2 grains gross water capacity, if it is kept at 2.580" long and simply necked up from .375 Ruger, which is about 101.1 grains water at that length?

AccuLoad III is a very good predictor. thumb

For instance:

.416 Ruger
103.2 grains gross water capacity
370 grain North Fork SP is 1.440" long
(SD = .305, same as a .375/300-grainer: Enough Bullet)
24" barrel
2.580" case length
3.400" max COL

Varget
70.7 grains (93% net case used) .... 51,500 psi ...2380 fps ... 4650 ft-lb
78.5 grains (104% net case used) ... 62,500 psi ... 2505 fps ... 5150 ft-lb ... 34.6% thermodynamic efficiency

XMP-5744
59.8 grains (83% net case used) ... 52,250 psi ... 2385 fps ... 4680 ft-lb
66.4 grains (92% net case used) ... 62,500 psi ... 2515 fps ... 5195 ft-lb ... 41.3% thermodynamic efficiency Eeker

Hot damn! Greatest efficiency I have run into yet in my brief acquaintance with AccuLoad III.

Your Mileage and COL May Vary. thumb

Personally I like the .416 Fenrisulven -lots of punch in that name.

Or use Finnish mythology: the .416 Väinämöinen! Cool

Africanhunter,
My guess and by gosh is around 2400 FPS. that case holds as much juice as a 416 Remington case soooo.

RIP,
I am thinking about a 20 inch barrel on this one, and your right I have been a proponent of the long tubes but I get this craving for a stubby gun from time to time and its been working on me lately..I just built a 416 Rem with a 20 inch tube and rather stiff barrel with some weight to it, and I am very pleased with it..Maybe this is my year for practiceing the art of circumcision! Smiler

I have listened to all the justifications for a short tube, none of which are valid. Therefore,I am going with the justification of "I want one of them shortys"
