Proving once again that Frozen Waterlogged Sand Bags are no match for a Saxon with a Screw Machine and a Yeti with a 505 Gibbs!

Special Thanks to Rich for working up the loads and "Pig Wrestling" the sand bags indoors to thaw in sub freezing teperatures

You will notice from the rifling jumping engravure that it was done with a 1:10" TWIST McGowen barrel.

The Woodleigh was a soft and just for comparison. Maybe someone else will be up to the task of performing a similar test with other bullets. Woodleigh & Barnes Solids into whatever medium from the same rifle with the same load.

Rich's test is about as severe as it gets for structural integrity, but is very unlike game, and of course there is no sense in comparing the Woodleigh soft to any solid for structural integrity or penetration in frozen wet sand bags, except for entertainment purposes. clap
Also, roundnose or FN solids will both stay on track in frozen sand, I guess, just like they do in stacks of wood. Not a good test for what makes the FN so special in game.

I have yet to get a Woodleigh roundnose FMJ or the old Barnes roundnose brass solid to stay on course in the IWB.

I have the S&H .395/330-grain brass FN, and the GSC .395/340-grain copper FN. I could test that in the latest version of the IWB consisting of 10" compartments of 1.5" wood and water.

I suspect in frozen wet sand bags, the copper FN would expand and penetrate less.

It would be a close contest in the IWB.

Best of all would be to Texas Brain Shoot some elephants. Either the S&H or the GSC would be sufficient, but the photo finish there would be interesting.

What? No comments about the performance of 10" twist in the .505 Gibbs?
Obviously capable of top velocity without blowing up the rifle.
The brass bullet was going fast enough for it to start expanding/deforming a wee bit, besides the sand blast grinding the nose off the bullet.

The S&H bullet might feature in the next Tremors sequel movie.
Good for shooting through sand into subterranean monsters.
The trick will be a targeting system to spot the giant worms before they eat the shooter.

Where is that "Chubby Checker Doing the Twist" emoticon when you need it? wave

The boomster made it up there for a shoot? Good deal, I wondered if you men were able to get together after all. I wish I could have gone too!

I've been wanting to scope Idaho out for a fall trip some day. I'm in Wyoming this fall.

Surely boom stick is not the Boominator. That would be Rich's nephew, surely, being offered up to the red gods.

Mac, and JKS, you are confused or my guess is wrong.

If boom stick won't finish off a 470 AR and report on shooting that, even though funding for it was donated by Mike and Blair from Australia (they paid the stupid tax on it too) ... how in the heck is boom stick going to have the gumption to travel to Idaho to shoot? bewildered

RIP, the delay in rifle construction is undestandable; Boomie's line of business (mortgage broker) has gone into the tank with the housing fiasco.

Even better on the shootout. I was able to get him into the SHOT Show for the weekend! He will have stories to last all year, and on a lonely road somewhere on the outskirts of Vegas he will experience Big Bore Nirvana. I'm going to duct tape the rifle to him, and him to a light pole!

Highjack off.
Comparing the penetration of the .395's:
S&H 330-grain brass FN
vs
GSC 340-grain copper FN

Load them
1) to the same velocity,
2) to same kinetic energy, or
3) to same momentum?

The differences will be little anywhichway.

I predict the differences in live game or IWB will also be little.

Could one possibly be better than the other at anything besides penetrating frozen, wet sandbags?
