Proving once again that Frozen Waterlogged Sand Bags are no match for a Saxon with a Screw Machine and a Yeti with a 505 Gibbs!
Special Thanks to Rich for working up the loads and "Pig Wrestling" the sand bags indoors to thaw in sub freezing teperatures
30 January 2008, 09:30
RIPOutstanding integrity of your brass FN solid. Fail Safe and then some.

30 January 2008, 09:30
boom stickwho is going to taxedermy the sandbabs

BRAVO!

yer makin the woodleigh look bad...

30 January 2008, 09:32
RIPYou will notice from the rifling

engravure that it was done with a 1:10" TWIST McGowen barrel.
30 January 2008, 09:48
MacifejThe Woodleigh was a soft and just for comparison. Maybe someone else will be up to the task of performing a similar test with other bullets. Woodleigh & Barnes Solids into whatever medium from the same rifle with the same load.
30 January 2008, 10:31
RIPRich's test is about as severe as it gets for structural integrity, but is very unlike game, and of course there is no sense in comparing the Woodleigh soft to any solid for structural integrity or penetration in frozen wet sand bags, except for entertainment purposes.

Also, roundnose or FN solids will both stay on track in frozen sand, I guess, just like they do in stacks of wood. Not a good test for what makes the FN so special in game.
I have yet to get a Woodleigh roundnose FMJ or the old Barnes roundnose brass solid to stay on course in the IWB.
I have the S&H .395/330-grain brass FN, and the GSC .395/340-grain copper FN. I could test that in the latest version of the IWB consisting of 10" compartments of 1.5" wood and water.
I suspect in frozen wet sand bags, the copper FN would expand and penetrate less.
It would be a close contest in the IWB.
Best of all would be to Texas Brain Shoot some elephants. Either the S&H or the GSC would be sufficient, but the photo finish there would be interesting.
30 January 2008, 10:47
MacifejYou aren't trying to start a penetration war are you RIP??

You know there's stuff here in the mad science lab that's VERY interesting!! How much clock cleaning do you really want??

30 January 2008, 20:10
MacifejGerard,
Please forward a few Hippo, Elephant, & Buffalo for us inexperienced guys to use as proper test medium.

We are running out of things that will stop bullets.

30 January 2008, 21:17
GerardI will check with our service provider to see if we can email them.
They said no.
Sorry, you will have to find your own.

31 January 2008, 00:06
RIPWhat? No comments about the performance of 10" twist in the .505 Gibbs?
Obviously capable of top velocity without blowing up the rifle.
The brass bullet was going fast enough for it to start expanding/deforming a wee bit, besides the sand blast grinding the nose off the bullet.
The S&H bullet might feature in the next
Tremors sequel movie.
Good for shooting through sand into subterranean monsters.
The trick will be a targeting system to spot the giant worms before they eat the shooter.
Where is that "Chubby Checker Doing the Twist" emoticon when you need it?

JKSI am awaiting the Boomster videos with baited breath!

John
There are those that do, those that dream, and those that only read about it and then post their "expertise" on AR!
31 January 2008, 08:09
MacifejDon't worry Boomer! The video won't be viewable EVERYWHERE on the planet!! (some places don't have electricity)

The boomster made it up there for a shoot? Good deal, I wondered if you men were able to get together after all. I wish I could have gone too!
I've been wanting to scope Idaho out for a fall trip some day. I'm in Wyoming this fall.

RIPSurely boom stick is not the Boominator. That would be Rich's nephew, surely, being offered up to the red gods.
Mac, and JKS, you are confused or my guess is wrong.
If boom stick won't finish off a 470 AR and report on shooting that, even though funding for it was donated by Mike and Blair from Australia (they paid the stupid tax on it too) ... how in the heck is boom stick going to have the gumption to travel to Idaho to shoot?

31 January 2008, 08:58
MacifejColonel Mustard in the Pantry??
31 January 2008, 09:15
RIPNot Colonel Mustard.
Captain Obvious.

Idaho SharpshooterRIP, the delay in rifle construction is undestandable; Boomie's line of business (mortgage broker) has gone into the tank with the housing fiasco.
Even better on the shootout. I was able to get him into the SHOT Show for the weekend! He will have stories to last all year, and on a lonely road somewhere on the outskirts of Vegas he will experience Big Bore Nirvana. I'm going to duct tape the rifle to him, and him to a light pole!

RIPO.K.
Not Idaho.
boom stick is to finally shoot a big bore in Nevada? More believable.
I'll believe it when it happens.
No squib loads!
No mercy!
31 January 2008, 09:36
MacifejMortgage Broker?!?!?! Ok get em a hot load in RGB's 600 then!!! No Mercy!!
31 January 2008, 11:27
boom stickdriving to vegas...
might even carpool...
wholesale mortgage... I am the middle guy between the brokers and the wall street investors. The bad guys tend to be mortgage brokers, loan officers and direct banks looking the other way. Its not so much the biz that has been hard these last 3 years its been the first home and wife that drains all the money...
I have survived the worst and it will only get
better.
I do what I can and with good friends, cooperation and kindness of others sometimes good things happen. The 470 will be on display at the shoot out in march in Texas that I hope to attend and see some of your ugly faces in person.
31 January 2008, 11:31
MacifejVERY ugly trust me Boomer!! If I make it to Africa before I croak off I won't need a rifle to slay the animals! One look from this mug and they'll wish they'd spied Medussa!!
31 January 2008, 11:49
boom stickI guess what happens in vegas won't stay there...
rip... Fly down for the weekend and see firsthand.
I should make a name tag with "boom stick" on it and see how many laughs I get.

OK...Now I am struggling not to hate you.

I am in the lumber biz

.366torqueRich you're taking the boom to Lost Wages? Cool!! Being as boom is a cameraman, you & he, can team up for a kickass report!
Take it easy on the little fella! We need him in one piece afterward.

31 January 2008, 20:54
Idaho SharpshooterAfter this we may need a new handle for him, maybe "Willow"; as it is said a willow sways in the storm while mighty oaks stand firm and are uprooted. And my new handle will be "Stormbringer".
This is starting to sound like a "Lord of the Rings" trailer.

RIPWhat great news! Boomer is going to finally get his 470 AR!
And Butch and Sundance hit the Shot Show next weekend.
I got happy feet now!

RIPHighjack off.
Comparing the penetration of the .395's:
S&H 330-grain brass FN
vs
GSC 340-grain copper FN
Load them
1) to the same velocity,
2) to same kinetic energy, or
3) to same momentum?
The differences will be little anywhichway.
I predict the differences in live game or IWB will also be little.
Could one possibly be better than the other at anything besides penetrating frozen, wet sandbags?
01 February 2008, 06:08
Teat HoundWell hell, you'll all be at the SHOT show?
I still have to get Boomie to drive up here to Bakersfield so we can go shooting at 5 Dogs.

I'm sure Gerard will have an opinion on this or at least quote a Magazine Test to support his opinion.

None of the above. Load them to the same pressure level.

There I go again, playing straight man to a comedian in RSA.
Point taken.

MacifejRIP - Gerard has a 30 year headstart on us so unless we are willing to make a significant investment of time (capital) we'll have to suffer his authority on the subject of internal ballistics!!

I would like to send some of your ammo loaded with various bullets to the lab so we can finally dispel the wives tale of "High Pressure" sans driving bands!
