the Remington M30 Express I bought at the Boise gunshow keeps whispering in my ear "...make me something worthwhile...". I had the notion to just run a 300 H&H reamer in and take that as my light/plains rifle to Africa in the spring, but I have been talking to Wisner and a few others and there is a way to build a real thumper on the inexpensive side.

1. mill out the bottom of the trigger guard/floorplate.
2. make a box that will extend thru the floorplate and be like a dropbelly single stack magazine that holds four 505-550 or 500-585 Gibbs rounds.
3. have a slightly homely four or five shot 505/550/585 Gibbs DGR.

Would this make up into a decent looking rifle or am I talking u-g-l-y?

For what it's worth do it properly...............pay once and cry once.

I reckon it will look damn ugly, from what I have heard there a nice action so it desreves the treatment.

A 30S can be converted to a DGR fairly easily if you stick to cartridges based on the H&H case. A new barrel and a little work on the magazine, bolt face, loading port and feed ramp will be the main alterations. Here's an example: HogkillersLott

the 505 case won't headspace a .585 bullet... i TRIED!!!

375 HH is easy peasy....

505 is a nightmare, no joke, no kidding, no fooling...

550 mag is THE way to go

my vote is the 300 since you already have yer 510KE that will swat down anything you aim at...

After speaking (plotting?) with the gunsmith, we have come to the same conclusion posted here...do it right or just leave it alone. THE MAN thinks I am capable of milling a two-piece trigger guard and floor plate and making an extended box. He gives me that smirk look and says "it's easy. You take a block of steel, chuck it up in the mill and cut everything that doesn't look just like the jewel-like Wisner unit you have off.". How can I argue with logic like that? Here we go again.

The easiest way to get a H&H lenght mag box for a Model 30, is to grind off the pins that hold the original mag box together. Turn them around and braze it back together.(3.65"+) You will need to trim the end pieces, and work the gusets down so that they do not interfer with the follower. Then install a mag lenght follower.

That is the way I did the box for my Lott, and will do the one for my 375 H&H.
