Spoke with Jon at Montana Rifleman this morning. They now have 339 on order so we're getting close. (I just added 4 more) If you want in you better get on the phone because the count is going up fast on the first 400 pc run and the $525 unit price.

For a really big action the price is right and may never be offered again at anywhere near this price. If one is a betting man, this is one to bet on. I talked to them 2 wks ago asking if they could make barrel thread bigger to match the increase in diameter of the reciever. Then it could be made to use my 700HE short version. If they'ed do it I and others would order enough in a short time to get run started. The threads now are 1& 1/16 a 1/16 of an inch smaller than the Savage at 1&1/8 I have 12ga FH in.And if threads were 1/16 more than Savage up to 1 & 3/16 in PH it would work.I'd get 3 or 4 if they'd do that.Small mausers are 1.1, Enfields 1& 1/8...Ed MZEE WA SIKU

How does a guy get on the list? What is the projected time of delivery? I want one! The only easy day is yesterday!

Go to www.montanarifleman.com and look under actions. Pick the PH version and place and order. They expect to start the production at the end of this year but you need to be ready to wait. The introduction price is $525 and once the inital 400 units are ordered the price will jump to between $700 and $900. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure he has a website.....maybe someone can help with a email or phone number....he also has some very pretty wood on hand. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." placed an order for 2 a couple months ago when I heard about the deal. Probbly wouldn't be a bad idea to make it three, then retire from sales here after everybody sees pictures and wants one reallllly bad. Hee-Hee!! Rich

I've got 2 on order and one will be an "economy" 505 Gibbs. I have a 505 barrel already threaded to match from the old Kimer of Oregon inventory (same thread pattern). Probably a synthetic stock when they come available. I have this stupid idea that I really really need a 505-416 Gibbs wildcat for the other. Mostly because I have the reamer and a $500 action. But at least I have some comfort in knowing there are plenty of equally stupid wildcat guns being built as I type this. You know you're a redneck when you rebarrel your 375 H&H to 375 Taylor. 465, I am thinking 550 Magnum on one, and seesawing between a 470 on the FL Rigby case and another 510KX; then rebarrel this current one in 470 Rigby depending... Three would make a really nice set, 416R, 450 or 470, and the 550. Only one fly on the 550, that steenkeeng belt! On the other hand, I just got back from sighting the grandbaby girls' Ruger RSI 77 243 in. She drew a deer tag, and decided this spring she is too much of a 21st century techie to hunt with grandpa's old raggedy-a Savage 250 in a 99. It will be a surprise for the B-day next week. regards, Rich

IF you had to pick 5 calibers for this project what they be? Yes I have a reason for asking. I am seriously thinking about a matched set. I am trying to decide what to do and would like serious input. Happiness is a warm gun

Hmmm. There is already 10 grreat choices. I will throw in the 458wm, 458 lott, 404 jeff and 500 jeffries. Any more sugesstions? I can see this isnt going to be easy. I guess since this is the ph action calibers for this part should be at 375 or above. Happiness is a warm gun
|
one of us |
Actually the 458 WM, 458 Lott and 404 Jeff is already available on the standard magnum 1999 action. You don't need the new PH model for these at all.
|
one of us |
The only reason I excluded the 375 based cases is that they already fit in the MRC 1999 long action. I tried to stick with rounds that need the larger PH action, FWTW. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.
|

So we go with the big boomers that need the larger action. I guess I wasnt thinking about the fact that you could use the other action. Maybe I should expand this to 10 actions then. My significant other wont be happy but I have enough overtime money put back to do it. Since I cant seem to get any time off to go hunting or do anything else for that matter I should get something out of busting my arse. Happiness is a warm gun

Then on the standard (long) action: 244 H&H 300 H&H 375 H&H 400 H&H 458 Lott I would continue with the short action but I can't think of 5 short cased rounds I'd want in that big an action unless you go with the WSM: 270 WSM 300 WSM 325 WSM 375 WSM 416 Z-Hat or WSM "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I am pretty sure I am on the list for one (.505 Gibbs bolt face chrom moly.................I am considering a second .585 Nyati but this one will have more meat left around the case rim due to the PH's bigger bolt face than my 602 built .585), who is the contact there now to confrim if you are on the list or not ??

Based on the few MRC examples I have fondled (can I say that here?) these are going to be a standard in the DGR business. You absolutely could not go wrong with a set of four: 416 Rigby 450 Rigby 500 Mbogo or 510 Kayser 550 Magnum If you can handle five, I would include a 375 Rigby for awesome striking power on plains game. Buy a 550 Magnum reamer and barrel action #1. Send it back, and have the belt removed and the shoulder area cut back to 50 caliber. Chamber #2. " " 450 Chamber #3 " " 416 Chamber #4 " " 375 Chamber #5 Have your gunsmith cut dies for each and go happy! Rich

470mbogo should be the default answer for the PH action. With 550 Magnum a close second. I spoke with Jon and he was very helpful. The 470 Mbogo is about as perfect a fit as there is but any large bore on the Rigby, Gibbs or Weatherby case should fit the action well. Of course the 600 Ok will also work and is an option from the CZ or other high end actions. I see this action as a 475 bore and bigger. The 600 Ok case is a great case to wildcat on and I'm a bit surprised that only a few people are playing with it.

Just a point of interest, the operations manager has left the company effective 8/4/06 "to pursue other interests". This is often seen as a "red flag" in the business world. It can be seen as bigger problems on the horizon or the end of recent problems depending how you want to look at it. I just thought you guys might want to know. Now back to the actions. I have decided on two and still debating on the rest. I have picked a 416 Rigby and a 505 Gibbs. I am going to pick at least 3 more. Keep the suggestions coming. For those of you with experience with the 470 mbogo, wasnt there some problems with the feeding or something? I havnt gone back to look at the conversations from a couple years ago but I seem to rember something like that. Happiness is a warm gun

If it walks like a duck, well, you know the rest of it. The recent delays getting deliveries of actions/barreled actions is another feature of the duck. It's far more likely that they're delaying the orders to make the run size quoted by suppliers. I have a PH model on order as well but I'm not making a down payment. I'll sign a letter of intent to purchase but that's where the whole thing ends. I'm a big fan of these guys and really hope they make it go and go well. However it's becoming more difficult to be optimistic.

Mike Smith, I like your options as they are my own. I have 4 actions on order for the 505 Gibbs, 450 Rigby, 416 Rigby, and 338 Lapua. All can take advantage of the extra strength and room of this action. You will have everything covered for plains game to ultimate dangerous game with these actions. I think once those that like the 338 Lapua see this action, they will have an option to the Sako action for the long range sniper rifle/long range hunting rifle situation. square shooter

the 338Lapua is a great idea. I think I shot one about 1991-92 that barrelmaker Dan Lilja of Plains, Montana, did . He was working with Sierra on development of their 300gr 338MK bulletss. He had samples in 280/300/320gr and wanted to try our Rockchucks at extended ranges. Did not make the 1000yard club, but did get one at about 850 yards according to the Geovids. Maybe: 338 Lapua 450 Rigby 550 Magnum Rich

Dan, As a Montana employer there are more jobs than people to fill them in many of the communities here. People come and go all the time. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was simply normal turn-over.

I don't know this first hand but have no reason to suspect that it's anything but completely true. That said, didn't he know that going in? I mean he had to accept some initial (assumadly small) initial salary didn't he? It still quacks like a duck.
