I just finished the book, Winds of Havoc, by Fiona Capstick (Peter's widow) and Adelino Serras Pires. The book is the story of Adelino of his life in Africa, and the trials and tribulations that he endured. Compelling and a must read for anyone interested in Africa, past and present. Very good read. Reminds you that there is a lot more to Africa than just a hard hunt, followed by drinks around the campfire. | |||

This book was recommended to me by my PH in RSA this year. It's not just a hunting memoir - but also the story of colonial powers and their countries. One of the best books I;ve ever read. | |||

I will be the black sheep.... I really did not like this book. I thought there was too little hunting. As far as the politics, I guess backing the lesser of two evils is a good way to test your luck. Of all the African hunting books I have read, I can think of few that I liked less than this one. This is too bad as I think Adelino Serras Pires is a good man and a legend in his own right. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. I enjoyed the book. Pires and friends went through some bad experiences. Piet Hougaard has some interesting stories about death-threats from Pires regarding Piet's early hunting concession acquisition in Mozambique. Piet says he wrote Adelino a letter telling him to come anytime, and sent him a map with his camp location circled. Tough guys, these. I wouldn't want to mess with either. This was not intended to be a hunting book. It is a story about a man and the outrageous things that happened to him as a result of black empowerment. I have had the honor of meeting him and what I found so gratifying was his being able to go on wiht his life with pleasure and enjoyment. He is a man of courage.
