For one thing, for example, Trump just wants to be able to claim he ended the Russian/Ukrainian war, brought peace, and thus might get the Peace Prize and be featured on Times as man of the year. That's what matters to him. So, he intentionally does stuff to weaken Ukraine and thus put Putin in a better position. It's just easier that way, for a perceived quick solution, and Putin has better "cards". It doesn't matter to Trump if he ruins the US/allies longstanding relationships. He will just bully his way back in if it suits him. He doesn't care about Putin's long-term ambitions. Kick that can down the road. I've already said, often, that IMO Trump is not just a narcissist, but much worse. He's a Dark Triad sadist. If he's a fool, he's a useful fool. In one sense, Trump is doing us a huge favor. He is exposing the wet dreams of the extremist right to light and air, the best disinfectant. Some ideas will work, others will fall by the wayside. Intellectual evolution at work. Parts of the Libertarian agenda may be carried along on its coattails, a test drive that may not have occurred without Trump unknowingly helping out. I think the Tea Party was to some degree a Republican effort to cadge an extra couple of percents in close elections, but rebranded a few ideas that would have been hard to prototype on just the Libertarian vote.
