375hnh, Damn you just got to love that name. I remember reading that article. Evidently the hunting operation that was trying to be set up never got off the ground. I remember there was one picture of one of the bulls fighting at the helicopter as it hovered over it. It was a really interesting article. Even the rocks don't last forever.

A few years ago, before he had his stroke, Henry McIntyre of Valentine,TX., told me that he had wild cattle in his area near the Rio Grande. "They're wilder'n a Sh*thouse Rat"...his words. He and a few other Cowboys did round up some of them but they weren't able to get all of them, obviously, and asked me to help him find some hunters to come shoot some of the bulls. They roam pretty much as freely as they choose and it would be a pretty good way to test a rifle before you took it across the pond. As to Helicopters, I know we use them on my uncles place for deer census and I have a friend that is a Government hunter that flies a small copter with which to kill coyotes etc. They are also used fairly frequently in the rounding up of cattle (quite extensively) on another ranch I've hunted on near Refugio, TX. The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends. I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

We certainly have some cattle go native out here. That said, other then the odd 3 year old slick that dogs and cowboys can't get out of the brush to rope, we shoot very few. Most of the wild cattle I have dealt with would be more of a marksmans game as if you caught one in the open to get a shot it would be a ways off and on the run. The brush they brush up in at least out here is hands and knees kind of stuff, and they would be flying out the other end before you could get a shooting lane anyhow. Maybe that mesquite would be more condusive to hunting them in the brush? As far as the helicopter goes we use one to gather several of our bigger or rougher pieces. As it would happen we used one last week to get 200 pair or so out of a field that used to take 8-10 guys. Now we can do it with just our 5 man cowboy crew. That said, only two others ranches in our area use one from time to time so I think it isn't cost effective for your typical 300-500 head ranch. There our 72 full time ranchers in our local cattlemans association and only three outfits use one, not unheard of but not common outhere either. We still prowl through all our fields horseback, no 4wheelers, but the mother cows are pretty good to gather off the ridges down to the cowboys in the flats with the chopper. tool though where they fit. All this said, if your country is like ours there are plenty of hogs to shoot and they make great practice. I checked some weaned steers this morning and saw 10-12 hogs out amongst several hundred steers. I'm plenty of outfits would love to have you help reduce that number.

Hawaii has lot of non-indigenous critters, pigs, goats, etc. As well as decent wingshooting as I understand. The wife and i have been talking about that for a while now. Sounds like a win,win to me.
