The South African canned hunt lion is born and raised in captivity. The only thing they have in common with wild lions is they share the same name. Dave

Lionaid campaign to ban the importation of lion trophies into the EU
October 2011. In Africa, lions have suffered catastrophic declines in the wild from an estimated 200,000 animals in the 1960's to fewer than 25,000 remaining today. In India, an isolated remnant has perhaps 400 individuals left.

There are many causes for this huge decline in African lions but Lionaid consider that lion sport hunting is a hugely significant additive source of mortality that needs to be immediately stopped before we can turn our attention to any other big issues that have caused declines. LionAid is a small but very effective charity.

Just 2,500 adult male lions in Africa
There are now only around 2,500 adult male lions left in Africa and yet around 650 lion trophies (the vast majority of which are adult males) are LEGALLY exported every year.

Lionaid is currently working on a concerted campaign to bring about a ban on the importation of lion trophies into the EU. Whilst the goal of stopping lion trophy hunting worldwide is the ultimate aim, the charity know well that the exporting countries and hunting operators will be putting up very stiff resistance to such moves. But as with the ivory trade, the importing countries need to take a rigid stance and acknowledge that lion sport hunting is not sustainable.

A Lionaid spokesman said "Once we secure this European ban, there will be enormous pressure put on the USA (importing over 60% of hunting trophies) and on CITES (the regulatory agency) to follow suit so that a worldwide ban will become an achievable objective."

"We are working with the UK and EU Governments and have so far gained the cooperation of 8 MEPs and 29 MPs across all the main political parties. In November 2010 we achieved a debate on lions in the UK Parliament and have had two written questions about lion conservation tabled to the EU Parliament (with more pending). We are now in further discussions with both the former and current Shadow Undersecretaries of State for Environment, and well as Minister Richard Benyon, current Undersecretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. "

"We are delighted that we have now been invited by Catherine Bearder MEP to discuss options face to face with the European Commissioner for Environment in Brussels, the EU Intergroup for Animal Welfare and Conservation, and perhaps the President of the Parliament. All to gain the inevitable and predicted support of the other 26 EU member nations or at least a majority of them to achieve a lion trophy import ban across the European Union. "

"Time is very much of the essence for lions, and we believe our progress over the past year has been greatly positive. "

As a Charity Lionaid depend on your donations, and in terms of lion conservation, they assure you they will be conscientiously used to ensure the future survival of this iconic species. To add your support to this highly effective campaign and to donate, please visit theirr website www.lionaid.org or email us on info@lionaid.org .

Hi Zig,

I have never hidden my fund raising for Lion Aid and i think most people here are aware of their aims.
However this does not stop me from seeking the other side of the story and this is all i have aimed to do here.

Liz,

The following an extract from Lion Aid - Pieter's Blog.

Note for the most Pieter your resident opinionated expert extracts choice snippets and false statistics which he presents with both sarcasm and contempt.

I am out of here.

Liz,

Okay let's take your number of only 2 500 adult male lions left and we hunters are killing them at a rate of 650 per year. It's only going to take 3.8 years to finish them off? And that's just us never mind the poachers?

'rolls eyes'

I know you don't have a monarchy but i would have thought you were aware of ours, apparently you love them. Queen Elizabeth (liz) gives out OBES. If only i had that power.

As for my figures, not mine, research i came across. If they were mine i really am a busy bee writing articles, trolling here, fudging statistics and doing a full time job in my pub!

So Jo,

You want us at AR to provide you with unequivocal factual information to defend the role of hunting in conservation but you are not prepared to stand behind the drivel that your organization puts out as fact?

No Zig, not at all. I don't stand by any research i have provided other than i put it out there for people to discuss and for me to learn from.
Some respect would be nice, i dont call everything i have been told drivel. Also not my organisation for the umpteenth time. Wow some of you guys are capable of spinning a tale even better than some of those rabid antis you speak of.

Jo,

My aren't we the sensitive one! I did not say you were talking drivel I said your organization was. In my opinion if you are raising money for an organization then you are part of it. By the way why don't you ask your fearless leader Pieter Kat about his lion rehabilitation program at Dollar block in Zimbabwe or at Vic Falls for that matter, I would be interested tO hear his response!

And here i am with the questions again!!

On average how many lions / prides are there within a hunting concession?

If lion hunting was to be banned what would happen to these prides / lions? Would they stay in the concession or be moved out?

If the lion / pride numbers are low within a concession what is done to prevent over interbreeding?
