i'm hoping to move to USA within 3-4years, so i will have this in mind when i sell some of my rifles, and buy some new.

i have a .300 Wby Mag i really love, so this one stays.

so which 2 cartridges should i choose to be prepared for all kind of hunting in the USA(not Alaska), in addition to the .300 Wby Mag?

(sorry to bother you with yet another x-gun battery tread)

My suggestions are 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds, and a 22-250 or even a 243 predator hunting should complete the battery.

300Wby Mag with 200gr AB's good for all your big game including Alaska, unless you want a 338 WM

.22 rimfire and a .22 centerfire.

1. Keep the .300 Wby

2. 25 WSSM

3. .204 Ruger

is the .240 or the .257 Wby Mag legal for small to medium sized deer(3-400lbs)?

I'd say 22 rf, 223 rem and 300W would suite you well. If you're not counting the 22rf, then 223 and a featherweight .25cl-7mm. Whether you handload or not affects caliber choice, as some excellent rounds have very little ammo choice.

Hunt everything on this side of the ocean with any .300 Wunderblaster and use the other two for play.

I'd suggest a .260 and 35 Whelen or 350 Win Mag. The 260 is good from varmints to deer (with 129 or 140 gr) and the 35 cal for larger critters.

Yes Steffen, the .243 caliber and the .257 caliber are legal for small to medium to large sized game in every state in the USA.

I don't know why posters can't simply answer the question. They will give you all types of info except a direct answer to your question.

From a Western U.S. perspective. You gotta have a .270 win. It'll do everything I ask it to, pronghorn to moose. Don't listen to the nay sayers That leaves a varmint round, I vote a plain old .223. A .22 rimfire is also a must.

I don't think I could give you a credible answer until I ask you a few questions first.

Are you primarily a target shooter, or a hunter? Do you have more interest in hunting large game, or small game? Do you know yet what part of the country you are going to move to?

What rifle calibers to you currently have?

i'm a hunter and i prefer big game, but i also enjoy small game and varmint hunting.
i was thinking of Texas, but anyway it will be one of the southern states.

i currently have:
.22 LR - i'll sell this one, i don't use it anyway.
.222 Rem - i'll sell this one, i'm tired of the rifle.
.300 Wby Mag - i'll keep this one

Well for big game, the 300 Wby has you covered. whitetail, mule deer, elk, antelope, Texas exotics, your pretty much covered.

Small game, well? You mean the kind you will eat, squirrels and rabbits, or the kind you blast? If you're eating it, it's hard to beat a quality .22 rimfire. I notice you "don't use" the one you have. Is it because you don't like the particular gun, or don't like the caliber?

If you don't like the rimfire caliber, you could always try a 22 Hornet?

Varmints? Coyotes, prarie dogs, or? Both can be done with the same gun, but if you REALLY get into it, you will want a different gun for each. Either a .223 Rem or a .22-250 would be hard to beat. Or even a .243 would work handily.

Do you now, or are you planning on handloading your ammunition? If so, it could open up a whole range of calibers for you.

There really is no limit to what you can get into here. Unless you get into machine guns or other destructive devices, you can really go nuts with calibers, and rifles here. That's one of the cool things about living here (well MOST states).

BE VERY CAREFUL!! You may let us talk you in to way more than just 3 rifles!!!

2.) 35 Whelen

These, plus your .300 WM, should cover everything that NA has to offer.

22LR & 257 Roberts. Yup, that should do it all in the lower 48.

6.5x55 and the 9.3x62 to compliment your .300 Wby. You're probably pretty familiar with the Mauser cartridges already.

Of course, you'll pick up a .22 LR and a 12 gauge once you get to the states. Then you have to get handguns in .22 LR, .357 Mag, .45 ACP, and a .454 Casull.

Those are just for starters.

Well the first thing you need to know about America, there is no limits on the number of guns you can own. The only limits is the limitation of your checkbook. Keep your rifles and bring them here. I know you guys in Norway have to jump thru the hoops. You may wish you had kept them some years down the road.

Yuck. If you have a choice go further West or Northwest. Oregon would be a good place for you, plenty of public land hunting opportunity for upland birds, waterfowl and varmints. And enough big game opportunity in OR and neighboring states to keep you plenty occupied. Especially if you just love to hunt and don't 'need' a trophy animal.

Nice thing about being in the U.S. is you're not limited to just 3 rifles. Even thinking that way gives me the creeps.

If you were talking about a limit of just 3 guns rather than 3 rifles, I'd recommend one pistol, one rifle, one shotgun, in whichever chamberings turn your crank. In most western U.S. states except California you would have no trouble at all obtaining a permit to carry your pistol concealed (almost all are "must issue" states). If you don't like snow, then I would recommend western Oregon. Everything in the NW states which lies east of the Cascade Mountains (northern extension of the Sierra Nevadas) gets plenty of snow and cold in the winters. Western Oregon is far enough south to avoid the heavy damp snows of western Washington, and far enough north to avoid the ridiculous California gun laws. It also has absolutely great fishing, but I personally do not think much of the waterfowling opportunities. That's probably because I used to live in the great waterfowl paradise called Saskatchewan.

If you didn't mind a wee bit of snow in your winters, I would recommend Idaho over Oregon. Better hunting, less socialists.

by small game i mean animals you'll eat, and by varmint i mean everything you don't eat.

if i lived on the countryside, where i can take my .22 rimfire out in the backyard and shoot it, it would be fun with a 10/22 or something similar.
i just don't bother take it out hunting or at the range.

when hunting small game for the pot, i've had good experience with the .222 loaded with 50grs FMJ.

i will wait to buy a .223 until i get there, cause i was thinking of a AR-15(here you must be a practical shooter to buy one).

and yes, i'm a handloader.



what is the American alternative to 6.5x55?
*cheap ammo and rifles
*you can buy ammo everywhere
*low recoil
*accurate
*works well on any type of game(a bit overkill on the smallest game, an little bit underpowered for the biggest)
in short terms, a plain, boring cartridge that just does everything well.

257 weatherby and a 376 steyr will kill anything on any continent.

You've got big game well covered. Get a varmint rifle if you want and a 22 for practice.

You really just "need" one rifle and the .300 would probably do. I have about 50, but every time I actually go hunting, I grab my old 338. I have used it on everything from antelope to elk, and it has performed perfectly.

As noted, you seem to really favor the Weatherby line, although you only own one. I marched to that drummer for years, but decided it was the wrong path. To everyone their own. My recommendation would be to do away with the Weatherby and go .22 RF, 25-06 and .338. There is very little that walks the earth that can't be hunted with these three. I would prefer a hornet or 222/223 instead of the 22RF, but many states outlaw their use for small game. Throw in a 416 and you are ready for the rest of your life. (I prefer the 25-06 or Roberts to a 270/7mm for it's varmint hunting use.)

Go crazy and have 22RF, 22-250, 25-06, 338, 416, and a good 12 Guage O/U. Anything else is just gravy.
