I don't know what you mean by compact. Almost by definition, a powerful cartridge will need to have a strong frame, and that generally means big and heavy. The 475 Wildey, the 44mag Auto mag come to mind. I have a 30Carbine by AMT. Depends on what you mean by powerful eg. energy, momentum, flat shooting etc.

A 1911 in 50 GI or 460 Rowland comes to mind.

A Desert Eagle in .50 AE, with a 6 inch barrel. Not really compact, but probably the most powerful automatic I have ever fired.

Peter, I had a chance to buy an AMT in .30 carbine years ago and passed on it. I've been kicking myself since. How do you like it? How does it shoot? Sorry to highjack this thread!

Whitworth, I love it. It is a fun gun. LOUD! I shot near max loads of 110 gr. bullets and H110. It not a hunting gun, but is a lot of fun to shoot!

Ditto what mb said. Probably the most powerful (and commonly available) compact auto is the 460 Rowland.

Mateba .44 Mag Auto-Revolver, six full house loads as fast as you can pull the trigger. If you need more than six .44 mag loads. Maybe you should have stayed in bed.

I'd have to say in an automatic compact. The only one that comes to my mind is the 10mm. I know alot of bigger guns that would fit but!!

I have a compact Bersa in .45 ACP. I keep it loaded with Remington +P 185 gr. Golden Sabre's. It is tough on armadillos and possums.

A Glock 29 10mm is the best standard size production semi-auto handgun available today.

They are fairly reasonably priced as well.

It can handle the top factory loads available from Double Tap Ammo and other's.

Wins what, "Big Pistol of the Year"?

The question was about compacts.

the 400 cor bon is a good choice...just put a new barrel in any 45 acp and you can get compact in that all day long but the 10 mm is more practical unless you have a 45acp collecting dust. just under the power of the 10mm

http://mysite.elixirlabs.com/index.php?uid=12665&page=1627

the 440 cor bon is good too but the 50ae pistols are bigger. basicly a 454 cassul in a auto with enough energy to hunt deer at 100 yards
