Just got through bleaching my Warthog from Botswana last year. Thought I would share a photo.

Cheers.

Thanks guys, he was a very nice Warthog.

How to bleach it? Oh boy. What a chore.

When it arrived, it looked as if someone had rubbed orange axel grease all over it. It was disgusting to say the least.

I tried scrubbing it with dishwashing detergent ... no luck, so I called Jerry and he walked me through it.

I started bt drilling holes in the bottom of the jaw bone to let the fat and grease drain out of the hollow part of the bone. Then bought 2 gallons of laquer thinner and soaked the skull for 5 days. This cleaned the majority of the grease from it.

Let it dry for three days, then to the hydrogen peroxide treatment.

I used Cream developer 40% hydrogen peroxide. I applied it every day for 4 days until the color was white. Washed it off and let it dry for three days.

Even doing it on my own, I paid $50 in material and chemicals alone. I am proud of the results and a big thanks to Jerry for his time and help explaining the process to me.

Hey Wendell--

I don't know if I showed you the one I got with Dudley (the first afternoon) after 3 years of trying to take one:

I'm doing him as just a skull also.

Les

Les,

I hadn't seen that Warthog. That is a good one, he is about the same as mine, only mine was broken off on his left side.

They always look more impressive as a skull mount.

Wendell,

Being from TX, I figured you'd know that you just put the skull on top of an ant pile and give it a few days.... hillbilly

Looks great Wendell. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with mine.

Bluefin,

I use crawdads to clean the skulls. They get inside every nook and cranny and pick all the meat out. Works well, but the antlers get bleached out. I have to recolor them. It is worth it though. Very easy method of cleaning, especially if you find an animal that has been dead for a while. I found a big Fallow last week that died. Going to take him to the pond soon. Let them do their work.

Jorge,

Thanks for not posting a picture of your Warthog and making Les and my pig look small. Man, that was a toad of a Warthog.

Wendell, if you spray your skull with fungalcidal sealer (available from WASCO Taxidermy supply in GA) it will last for decades and prevent a number of problems that can arise down the road. Good looking job, and the Hawg is a dandy.

That is an interesting pose. How did you get the Warthog to sit up like that and hold the gun?

This one was taken in April 2007 in Limpopo province. The body was kind of small one, but the tusks are great.

I guess those tusks are great!

If I'm lucky enough to get one I'll do a skull mount like that as well. I think they look really classy.

I'm goint to have my taxidermist go ahead and do the shoulder mount but your skull looks so good I had him finish it the same and I just put some McKenzie tusks in it. The originals will go in the shoulder mount.
