My Alaskan Moose is finally home, made the long trek from Fairbanks Alaska to Jackson WY. This moose was taken last year on the south side of the Brooks Range (my 2nd Home and playground) on an Archery permit I drew.

The ceiling is 10 feet high, the Moose has a 40" neck and is on the new Holehouser Form, the whole thing weighs just over a hundred pounds, and took three people to put up.

Nice mount! One of these years soon I'll be out looking for a nice old bull. I'm still eating though the younger bull (43") I shot in 2006... making a huge pile of jerky now from what is left.

AKsheephunter,

Nice looking bull. I just got to AK and am new to the forum. I'm looking to score a bull, bear, and cribou before I leave. I know hunting spots are "Classified" so I won't ask, but a question I have is this...will my .3oo WSM loaded with 150gr ballistic tips penetrate enough for Moose? The really crapy part is I have 77 rounds of this stuff and don't like the bullet pullers too much. I know bullet placement is key, but will 150gr ballistic tip allow for some error?

Sorry if this is in the wrong plce. Great looking bull bye the way. Awesome looking on the wall.

Texas462,

Your 150 grain ballistic tips are sufficient, but not what many would recommend for moose. I personally believe in 180 grain premium bullets (Barnes, Nosler Partition, etc.) for moose. Having said that, an awful lot of moose have fallen to 150 grain bullets from 30-30's, 270's and the like, so these bullets will do the job if placed properly.

As someone who shoots regularly, 77 rounds doesn't sound like enough of a supply to influence my choice of bullets. I would recomend using them for caribou and small game, and would suggest you pick up a hundred rounds or more of 180 grain premium loads. Use these for bear and moose, and you will have an extra margin for error in placement. If you are going to be in Alaska long enough to do the hunting you describe, the small investment in ammo will be well worth the return.

For me, it's not the bullet I'd worry about, it's the speed the WSM will push it to. I'm afraid a 150 BT at WSM speeds would really open too quickly to get much penetration. Now, the same bullet @ 308 Win speeds might be the cats meow.

AkSheephunter,

Nice and I mean nice bull/mount. My 62" bull is at the taxidermist now and should be in sometime this month. Sorry to say it won't be a beautiful should mount like yours....at least for now. I can only afford a European mount fo now. The cape is being tanned so within the next few years I can have a shoulder mount.

Can you tell us about the hunt?

Alan

The Bull was taken in Sept. 2007, on an archery only area on a draw permit south side of the brooks range, the area is restricted to motorized vehicles, and must be accessed on foot due to the location near the Alaska oil pipeline. Started hunting on opening day ( 1 Sept) and shot this bull on the 12th. It took two whole days to get him packed out, despite the fact that he was only right at a mile from the truck a great solo hunt, but full of adrenalin due to the number of bears in the area, tried to pursue one particular Griz, but he winded me and left the country, never saw him again.A great hunt, and I'd do it again. Every time I look at my bull, it reminds me of that great solo adventure I'll never forget.

AKsheephunter ----- WOW - I really like your Moose. And a solo bow hunt that certainly had to add to the challange. It also brings back memories of my Moose hunt in the Farewell Burn. Still a highlight of my hunting and always will be. Mine was a gun kill (.340 Wby) that scored 222 2/8 Boone & Crockett. Good shooting.

texas462,
Don't risk your hunt on a marginal bullet at best ! The Ballistic Tip is a great bullet but was designed for deer and antilope! Go with a Partition or a Barnes triple shock !!!

Texas462 -

I agree with hipshoot! I didn't even get the greatest penetration with that same bullet/caliber on ANTELOPE. Big nasty entrance, no exit. And that was a 90lbs doe

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

What a gorgeous animal! The mount is perfect too, has a real "what are you looking at, pipsqueak?" look in the frontal shot. Suits an animal as large and majestic as a moose. Thanks for sharing!

Caribou and deer will die quite nicely to those ballistic tips. I wouldn't use it on other game though, just too soft at WSM velocities. For black bear (which can be unpredictable/dangerous), elk, or moose, 180gr is really the way to go. Use any decent 180 and you'll be fine.

AK:

Nice moose.

Did you use detachable antlers? I do all my big stuff with detachables now. I have two caribou, two elk, a kudu, a moose all with detachables antlers. I can't imagine a moose without them. makes putting it on the wall a lot easier.
