I count four bullet holes in the kisser.

And the hunter is holding a scoped bolt rifle.

Dave, in this case, the picture begs for a thousand words.

Details! Please!

Gentlemen/Ladies

I am busy putting together a short story about this encounter. Yes, there are at least 5 holes - this bull was belt fed by both PH and client and dropped at about 8 yards. Just give me until tomorrow to get it all in order - need to get some of the finer details from the PH in question. I'll get back to you on this one, I promise.

Hello

I have not yet perfected this story, but I am going to describe briefly what happened that day, down on the Rukomechi River in the Nyakasanga area of the Zambezi valley.

Following up on a small group of dagga boys early one morning, PH Peter Wood, Chris Rolfe of South Africa and Pete's trackers Shorty and Rindai, came up on the bulls around midmorning, in seriously dense jesse. After a while spent assessing and inching in closer, an opportunity presented itself. Though it was not an ideal case scenario, Chris had proved himself a capable marksman on a number of occassions and Pete gave him the go ahead. Unfortunately, Chris didn't get it quite right, hitting the chosen bull a little high and a little back, as was later determined.
A tense and meticulous follow-up ensued - rifles gripped firmly at the ready and senses screeching silently. Twice the hunters bumped the wounded bull and it blundered off deeper into the jesse. Visibilty was severely restricted by interwoven scrub and to say the hunters were not happy campers would be an understatement. After what seemed an eternity, the legs of the bull were espied under the brushline about 20 yards ahead, and the hunters tried working their way into a shooting position. The bull broke for the third time, bludgeoning its way through the thick bush and away. Or so the hunters thought, but the bull stopped not far off, and yes, it did circle back. With Shorty at point and on blood, and Pete and Chris scanning the bush ahead, the men proceeded. And then the bull came, crashing through the restrictive vegetation from only about a dozen yards off. Shorty hit the deck and the hunters faced down the enraged bull as it came purposefully on. Chris fired three rapid shots with his .375, hitting the bull in the head each time but failing to stop it. And then Pete came to the party, two bullets from his .458 Lott punching into the bull's head at close range. Pete's first shot was too low, but the second brained the beast not three yards from where the hunters stood shoulder to shoulder. Yes, it was three yards, not eight as I reported in a post yesterday - I spoke with Pete this morning.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are five holes in the face, and one just under the boss, just over his left eye!

I' say the rifle didn't hold more that three down, but the six holes were made by two rifles, in a desperately tight sittuation! Eeker

For Shootaway--A straight line can be drawn between any of the holes to the middle of the brain. Without seeing the angles involved or doing an autopsy, we have no idea which, if any, shot reached the brain,or the spine, aorta, etc.

Will,

Your comment reminded me of a story that I thought might be interesting to share.

A few years ago at a bison roundup at an adjacent ranch to my family's, the owner could not get a large bull to go through the chutes to the squeeze. The bull refused to go forward or back and was holding up the whole event, which typically took two days when things were going well. Eventually the guy lost his patience and decided to kill the uncooperative and unruly (it had already killed two cows by goring them in that tight confine of the chutes) beast and hoist it out of the corral. So he gets out his 458 Win Mag and shoots it directly in the head. It drops like a bag of wet cement, right in its tracks, and all the guys pile over the corral walls and start to get ready for the big job of removing the 2200+ lb carcass. It took them all by bit of surprise when this bull procedes to get back to its feet! Eeker All 5 guys scattered and bailed back over the walls in a damn hurry!!!

The owner then emptied his 458 into this bull's head, while his son did the same with a 375 H$H. After 7 shots this bull was still going strong, snapping fencerails like matchsticks and knocking over 6" fenceposts. Did a tonne of damage to this fellow's corral.

My Dad ended up finishing the affair with one shot from his 8mm Rem Mag. His shot was the only one to hit the brain...the rest went all around it. 8 total holes in its head, with only one or two in the nose.

Proves that when you've got a riled bull buffalo of any kind, just any old head shot will not do. Brain or neck is the only thing that will stop them.

Epilogue: The ranch owner subsequently bought a 460 Weatherby, but thats a whole nuther story. Big Grin

Cheers,
Canuck

I always thought those "Perfect Shot" books and other like guides to bullet placement were largely unnecessary - except maybe for giraffe in general and the finer points of elephant and croc brain shots.

But after reading this thread, and Canuck's post in particular, and counting the bullet holes in that buff's face, I have changed my mind . . .

Still, what one can do in theory while studying "The Perfect Shot" is not always the same as what can be done when facing a charging bull buffalo!

Lest we forget, in some circumstances, anything less than "Perfect" can be fatal!

Trust me, MR, the rancher in question didn't have a clue where a bison's brain is Roll Eyes Smiler...but he did manage to get close a few times. He was shooting at an angle downwards and aiming between the eyes and in the "forehead"...my Dad had sectioned a bison skull one time out of curiosity and figured out the brain was further back.

I'm always surprised how many hunters don't really have a firm grasp on internal anatomy....head, neck/spine or vitals.

The definite lesson in this is 'shoot well'. I can't really imagine the feeling of pumping 5 shots into that bulls head and it still coming. Eeker That picture really makes the imagination run wild.

Cheers,
Canuck

Hey all. Dave Hulme has just helped me to join this great site. Its great to see all the discussions going on in here. All I can say about this Buff is the shear strength they have, to watch him taking lead like that without even a flinch or toss of the head(coz he didnt want to lose sight of his target,me) It was not fun holding off to let my client try to finish this game he had started, but then again it all happens so fast. I take my hat off to him he did his best, and when his mag was empty he immediately started to top up the mag.
A good man and I will hunt with him any day.
As for Buff there is no more of a unpredictable animal out there.
