When I first came around the African forum was fun, t made me think, it made me laugh. It was just plain old good entertainment. Today, the same old dreary threads stay high on the boards due to......I don't even know what. What we need is some new blood...or perhaps some old blood?

Question:
Should Saeed allow back.....

Choices:
500Grains
Pinchon1
Both
none of the above

I don't know any of those posters but I'll tell you Steve, things change.

What changes most is your perspective of things around you. Bush Alaska changed while I was there and it continues to change. If I moved there tomorrow I would probably think it was great. Mainly because I would have no previous experience with it. Nothing to compare it to.

Everything evolves. Your point of reference has changed. Nothing more.

Jim,
I did clinical research here, you can go look at post counts from whenever in the statistics area. Like right now there are 195 people logged on to AR, in the "Heyday" 400-500 was common. Its in decline. These things all have a lifespan and the critical mass of this forum was sometime back.

Just look at some of the lame thread, sharpest horns??? who cares??? Will the 375 be replaced by the _______fill in the blank.

I used to log on and be able to read new threads and posts for an hour or so, now...no kidding 3-5 minutes and done.

Steve

The second thread you mentioned started back in your "heyday" 10 years ago. The sharpest horn thread I actually started to read until it became a duiker lovefest and I lost interest.

There's lots of threads on here I personally don't read. Three years ago I read them all because I didn't know shit. I learned a little since then thanks to most of the posters on here.

I also remember when I almost gave up on the place when Cane Rat under his previous pseudonym and you under Chip-------lo thought you were spicing things up making 50% of the threads a gay bashing affair.

Numbers of post counts don't mean squat. If the place doesn't offer what you are looking for then the obvious thing to do is look elsewhere. Hell, I may even do that down the road but I will most likely keep returning for the hunt reports. Dems is fun!! Big Grin

If you do bail, you still know how to reach me in the real world.

Jim

Jim, I will never bail, too many good peeps around here, just spend maybe one hour a week instead of 90 minutes a night. I gaze at it on hot Saturday and Sundays after my bike rides since I cant go outside after about 8am here.

Cane Rat Drook is one of the most intelligent poster on this site. He knows EXACTLY what he is doing

I'd much rather a somewhat dull and dreary ARF than deal with the racist comments and hate-filled spew over at 24hr.

PS: horrible point of note but...if this board seems dull, perhaps one should go out and live life a little and then come back here and report about it? Just a thought...

This actually goes to prove my point.

Once a member turns nasty and get kicked off, he should not be allowed back on the forum again.

We are pretty tolerant of what members can post.

But, a line of deceny and common sense has to be taken into consideration.

And regardless of how valiable some think a member is, if he does not abide by our rules then he has no place here.

It really as simple as that.

How many people log in or partricipate is immaterial.

I will take quality over qnatity any day.

We are not trying to please any advetizers by having large numbers.

But you have made exceptions to that rule, Nganga being one. He has been a worthwhile contributor I would say and thus your choice was wise.

In the end, it's your forum, your choice.

I am not sure I have made the right decision now.

Nganga has asked me to allow him and one of his sidekicks to start their previous silly game again, when I ignored him he started this thread.

This is the sort of thing which makes no sense to me. As we are supposed to be dealing with grown up men. Why would anyone one want to get into silly games on a public forum is beyond me.

That is why I said once a member is banned, he will stay banned.

Here are my thoughts on 500Grains.

Before he was banned, he and I had a little tete a tet here on AR. I found out he lived in SLC and knew a buddy of mine there, so I made arangements to meet him there. hammering knife BOOM Was in the air...

However, when we met I discovered he was in person a very nice guy.

Since that day we have become very good friends, we have shot together several times, hunted praire dogs, several times, had dinner, I know his wife and kids, and we talk in e mail nearly every day...

However he is very political, likes political cartoons, videos etc... Many that are controversial, but in the USA freedom of speech protects that.

Still when you are on an International forum I feel you should abide by the rules of the forum owner.

And speaking for me personally I do not get on any forum to cause controversy, or Hatfield and McCoy Fueds, I get on Forums to have fun and talk about "stuff" with other forum members...

When you are playing in somebodys backyard you need to go by there rules...

However I still do not under stand why DA Man has not been banned??? I have never had any problems with him, but it seems like he lives to start controversity, as do some others...

But back to 500Grains, he is one of the nicest, most congenial, people to be around in person, that I have ever met...

I have met a LOT of people, in person, that post here on AR. Truth is I have not met ONE that I did not like.

I have made many friends here, including those I have not met in person.

Precisely!

That is what the majority of people do when going on a forum.

A few, though, do not seem to have a life, and play any personality they wish anonymously on the Internet.

Saeed,

Sometimes that is isn't what occurs. Usually the little whiners get bored and move on.

I'm glad this isn't Facebook, always worrying about someone's FEELINGS.

I do think that the recent threads about seeking out client and PH sexual indiscretions seems a bit over the top childish. But then I elected not to read them. Not reading threads is always an option!

You provide a free hunting forum, regulated by your sense of decency. What more could one want?

And 500 grains, whatever sin he committed, was a Casper Milquetoast in person, but was even a bigger jerk than I on this forum. I don't know what he was trying to prove.

As long as your jerk-tolerance includes me I'm happy. Smiler

Having visited the political forum on one ocassion and seen the garbage, vitriol and just plain hatred that goes on there, what could 500 Grains possibly have said that even comes close to the crap that goes on over there? Anyhow I must have missed it but why did he get banned? just curious. jorge

At the risk of ridicule, I get some of what Steve is saying. Some of the topics are a little, well, bland. That isn't saying that they are bad.

I have no idea about the "games" that they desire to "play". They (Steve and Andy) seem to have pretty much been model citizens since their return as far as I can tell. Most of the prior behavior (with the notable exception of Brittany Boddington) didn't bother me. I recognized it for the joke it was. The Boddington posts crossed the line IMHO.

I view the site more as a source of information and forum for the exchange of information, not a place to watch anonymous internet bloggers bash each other over cooked up controversies. From the standpoint of a place to share information, I think the site is second to none. If others find it boring, look somewhere else for controversy.

I think the AHF reflects the times we are in. I have talked to a few past prolific posters who do not post now simply because they are not going hunting as much as they used too.

The Amercian economy and for that matter the world economy has put a damper on African hunting and the trckle down effect is less stuff on AR.

My $0.02 FWIW.

More than 500 Grains, I think we lost some very well-traveled and experienced African hunters to the forums for various reasons. I always enjoyed Allen Day's well written and thoughtful posts as well as Nickudu and Tcarr... even ol' Ray Atkinson was entertaining at times.

I agree with Mike though, I really come here for intel on PH's, hunting areas, game populations, travel issues, etc. that have to do with international hunting. There is a ton of "been there, done that" experience on this board. I use AHF, AHR and ATF for information gathering and try to stay out of the pi$$ing contests. I think I have gotten better at staying out of the fray while still expressing my opinions as I have... ahem, matured. When you combine this forum with other resources like the Hunting Report, and checking references you minimize avoidable problems when you hunt across the globe.

.......................ABSOLUTELY!!!!

IMO, if the forum is a little bland right now it is because lots of the guys are in the field on safari, and that leaves the information that has been posted hundreds of times, and to the old timers is simply repetition. The reason for the repetition is because someone new to the game asks for it! To them it is new, and to the old “rank and file” it is old news, but like a book that has good information, some have already read it, but to others it may as well have been written yesterday because it is new to them!

If the forum is a little slow, the way to boost it up to speed is NOT by causing a pissing contest. That solves nothing good, and only makes enemies of otherwise good people!

Jorge, the reason you did not see the thread that got 500Grains boosted is it was on the political forum! Most of it was insulting our host among other things. Saeed posted some of it in response to questions about his expulsion!

Like you, there are two places I will not go, one is the political forum, and the other is a religious forum. Nothing anyone can say will change anyone's mind on those two forums, so nothing is gained by offering your own position, or reading opinions you simply do not believe!

I must admit, unfortunately, I have a tendency to react, sometimes to aggressively, when attacked, when I should just move on and consider the source! Unfortunately there seems to be a small band of stalkers who will follow you where ever you go, no matter the subject, and they are a cancer on any forum they visit, and when asked to cease and desist, and continue their antics they are usually banned, sooner or later, for the good of the forum and/or website!

This is actually very typical for an online forum.

I used to post a lot on a Cigar Forum and that peaked right around 2000 which was the same time the cigar craze had died down. I still visit and post but the number of daily posts is way down.

I used to post a lot on a Smith and Wesson forum and that peaked around 2006-2007 when S&W prices were shooting up and you could still find good guns for good prices.

Judging by the posts here and the trip reports it is looking like 2007-2008 was probably the peak for African Safaris. People will no doubt continue to go but $15,000 buffulos, downturn in the economy, aging baby boomers and "been there done that" have all taken there toll to some degree.

You can rest assured that there will be some new craze or hobby that comes along, there always is.

For better or worse, this forum has become part of my daily life. We exchange information, I get to enjoy others' hunting experiences, and I socialize with a bunch of friends I've never actually laid eyes on.
Overall, there seems to be less activity than there once was. We are aging, and it seems that newer net denizens gravitate to "social media" sites rather than traditional forums. That's not for me, so I'll see y'all around here.

.......................ABSOLUTELY!!!!

The AR forums in general and African Hunting in particular are the places I go to escape even if only a couple of minutes and I learn something every time I visit even in these slower times.

Thanks for the info Doc. Man, it must have been awful to get banned for posting in that cesspool!

As to the gent that mentioned Allen Day, our friend succumbed to cancer about two years ago and I believe Terry was figthing the same malady. Anyhow, I've always considered this forum sort of my touchtone when it comes to all things hunting and reloading. Whilst I tend to post more elsewhere, this is still my go to place. jorge
