I still remember my first encounter with eles.. Thoughts going thru your mind while tracking and seeing them in front of you... My thoughts, " Is my gun loaded, even though I know I filled up the magazine and chamber... Is this 458 Lott really big enough to handle an elephant... Final thought, did the firing pin break after the last shot on the sight in range..." Good shooting... Mike

The video process really distorts the distance/ depth perception process. When we intially shouted down the cow she was about 5 yards away. When she went down the path I think she had already decided to sort us out, she was just checking on her calf before coming for us. As she walked down the path away from us her body language was still hostile and agitated. We might have defused the situation by withdrawing from the crown of the hill so that she could not see us and perhaps not charged. If she would have charged, however, we would have been in an even worse position had we not been on the crown of the hill. Alan and I both thought, comparing notes after it was over, that when she got to the foot of the hill it would turn into a mock charge and that she would not press the charge home. In this respect we were both caught a little flat-footed. When we retreated back down the hill, 3 cows came from the left to about 5 yards, screaming in rage and trying to get up the nerve to finish us off. After a short stand-off that took about 10 years off my life, they withdrew. I was using a 458 Lott with Barnes banded solids @2200fps. Alan was using 500gr Trophy Bonded solids. His rifle is a well worn Interarms 458 with a Bell and Carson stock he bought from a guy who did a lot of cropping with it. The barrel has almost no riflng left. Thanks for the kind comments, Russ Green.

It looked and sounded like you both shot at nearly the same time. Were these brain shots, or a near miss that stopped her followed by a brain shot? I could not tell. I did notice she did not move when you made the finishing shot when she was down. I was chased off a termite mound by my first and only cow elephants mother. But the rest of the herd kept away! Congratulations on an exciting and safe hunt. You have amazing composure. Andy

I am by no means educated on Elephant hunting but just wondering what do you think she would have done had yall made a hasty retreat once the calf and mother had run past your position? Does fleeing a disturbed mother elephant make her want to stomp your butts even more? Great shooting and videography! I hope you tipped the cameraman well! Also, why did you choose not to use your 500NE double? Double Rifle Shooters Society

Andy, yes both the first two shots missed the brain but stopped her. The third shot brained her. Missippian, to answer your question, I really don't know. It could have gone either way. I did not take my 500NE because it was at GSI being repaired. As it was shipped from Germany it was doubling. I was not very happy to find this out about a month before my departure. I was lucky to have a 458 Lott as a back-up. I should have shot some speed drills earlier, but I was single loading for load develpment and regulation and, really, who expects to get a new double and find out it doubles right out of the box? GSI/Merkel fixed it no charge but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I found the transition from years of bolt gun use to a double rifle to be a little daunting, so I decided to sell it. I was having trouble learning to do rapid reloads. I am a little curious as to why no takers at $8K. I will probably end up keeping it and work on becoming more proficient at reloads.

Yea, keep it. It's fixed now, eh? To become proficient at handling and reloading your double, invest in a SxS two trigger shotgun and it will become second nature shortly. Us a belt of shell bag on the same sie you want to learn to load from for your rifle... JPK Free 500grains

Head Trauma, In reality a double rifle, the vast majority of the time, is a two-shot deal where rapid reloading is not required. Yeah, you have to reload it, occasionally rapidly, but not under the duress of impending death! ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. My suggestion id to keep the double and practice with it until you fell comfortable with using it. Don't take it to Africa until you feel very confident with it. You will know when that time comes. 465H&H
