Charl I am very sorry to hear you have had your camp stolen.

I hope you catch that swine.

Sounds like the hunting went well.

Communications sound like typical Africa Wink

You have been well supported by the African hunting fraternity. That says a great deal.

Good luck and best wishes, Chris

Assuming client is on same page as Charl, and also that this is the whole story, I think we can put this mess down to a technical glitch exacerbated by an unfortunate stroke of bad luck, compounded by lack of any backup system while outfitter was incommunicado, which itself was a human glitch compounded by lack of a backup system.

And it sounds like Charl has, or is in the process of making good.

So I for one will offer an apology for jumping the gun, to the extent that I implied that there was any bad faith here.

Glad you are all sorted Charl.
As I said in my first post to Dogleg, the only way that hunt was not going to happen is if you were no longer breathing.
I was glad to find out this was not the case and as expected, the client got what he paid for.

Now we can take pot shots at all those unemployed Kangaroos, as their court seems to have been pulled from under them.

I'm no expert, but Charl's response sounds like a gentleman's.
Charl sees where things went off course, has stated what he's
learned from the mis-steps, and the client got a buff, and Mr
Andrew McClaren has been recognized for his efforts to make
things right.

Unfortunately, there are those on AR & the rest of the world that are quick to jump to conclusions & fly off the handle. Sometimes I am guilty as well.
Thankfully there are also those that jump to help & defend. GOD Bless Them!
I come to AR to hang out with like minded friends & learn from their experiences. I know we will not always agree, but the mean spirit that some seem to enjoy flaunting, is just not worth me wasting my time dealing with.
The ignore function is a good way to limit aggravation in my life.

I have no bone to pick nor any dog in this fight and nothing to gain from what happened.

But from an outside perspective if you are going to book a $10 000.00 hunt and not hear from your PH/Outfitter when especially he told you that he would book your flight and leave it till 99 before starting to call ???? It's Africa or for that matter anywhere in the world surely you would look after your interest.

Charl, assumption is the mother of all and not getting any confirmation from your client about receiving his emails and new flight details ???

AR, has got many who can jump the gun and type a quick email and less who will actually stand up and do something but the small amount that actually stand up outclasses the quick on the draw by 100 fold with their deeds to have a worldwide community to look after each other even if people have never met or talked before tu2

This is a lesson to be learned by all and it all worked out in the end so except for a couple of days of worries and a day or two lost in hunting a great story can be told a great lesson for all and a adventure was made thanks to AR.

About what I figured, though the stolen camp was a shock to everyone I'm sure. Especially Charl. That would be a major break down for anyone. Hopefully he'll be able to "Sort That Sucker SOB out too" the sooner the better on that deal.

Glad to hear the details on what took place.
I've gotten a note from dogleg, his hunt turned out well. He'll get on before long with his hunt story.

There was nothing to ask about until July, when the flights changed. That's when communication/lack of communication problem became apparent and I had no way rectify it. Charl is still working on finding out why, and to establish some failsafe to ascertain that it never happens to someone else.

Andrew is indeed a star here- but a gentle reminder that there was a behind- the- scenes individual who has not come forward to claim any credit for the end result. and trust me, his role was SIGNIFICANT! bottom line is Dogleg had a good and successful hunt and kudos to ALL involved....

I confirm that the retired hunting outfitter the jdollar refers to wishes to remain anonymous and has played a very significant and really crucial or pivotal role in helping Dogleg! Without his intervention, we would have probably not succeeded! I have personally thanked him by email for his help.

Before we put the whole thread to rest I may as well tell the buffalo story. In the strange way that things have of working out it could also be described as "over before it started."

On the first day that we got out hunting we took a long boat ride to a neighboring island where there were reports of buffalo. On arrival we picked up some more locals and set off on foot looking for fresh tracks. That was a little slow until Tasha picked up something he liked and lead us off into the swamp on its trail. We walked through the thick reeds in water that tended to vary from knee to nut deep before breaking out into some more open terrain.

In approximately the time it takes to say "Planno" and then "He's coming" he was. That was rather odd, a bull coming from a ridiculous distance just to run into a couple of .458s when he got there.

As I remember it, that's about when the rain hit us. Parts of me are still wet. Eeker

Congrats on a very nice Buff Mike! Sorry about your hassles getting on with your hunt.

As far as Charl goes. I've known him for a number of years and have hunted with him. He loves to hunt (gave up a posh law career to take others hunting) and he cares about his clients/friends. I would hunt with Charl tomorrow, next week or next year. As long as I've dealt with Africa (since the 1970s) there has been a saying anytime trouble shows its ugly head: "It's Africa, shit happens." I cringe like most of us when things go awry, for ourselves or fellow hunters, but we see how fast others jump in to help another hunter out of a jam. Thanks to all that helped Mike and Charl in a difficult time. May your next adventure come off like a dream! LDK

I've been off the forum for ages, and just picked this thread up. Otherwise I would certainly have offered to help, as I'm in Jhb and at a semi-permanent loose end!

It's stuff like this that makes me proud to be a South African and a hunter.

WELL DONE, chaps!!! clap

What would have been the outcome had Dogleg NOT had the support of a group like AR and gone to J'Burg, hoping the outfitter replied to the emails, etc.

It wouldn't have been pretty. I'm very fortunate to have had AR as a resource, and individual members who took up the cause. With-out that..........................well, a guy could "what if" forever. On pure speculation I'd say that a guy with a rifle and money belt could find something to do in SA, even at the last second.

Some possible scenarios;
1) Walk up to the first person wearing a Tag shirt and holding a sign with a name I can pronounce, but not towing a client. Say "I've already cleared the guns, can we please get going I hate crowds. Oh, and there's a crazy guy who thinks he knows me, we should get going before we have to talk to him again". Big Grin

2)Call up an outfitter I've hunted with a couple of times and tell him the situation. Chances are that if he couldn't take me out he could find someone who would.
