Dogleg I have tried to contact Charl for you. If you are conidering staying home, dont. There are plenty of ways to get into Charls camp so unless he is dead you will have a hunt. If you get here and dont have any joy give me a call I can get you into Charls camp within 48 hours. Now get on your plane I am going to PM you my contact details Cheers Ian Specialist Outfitters and Big Game Hounds An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. - Winston Churchill

Good luck. Hopefully the worst case is that you should make it to camp ok and can use a borrowed rifle. Not ideal but it is funny how niggles like this sometimes bode well. Safe trip.

Mike, I have sent you a "I'll be your South African Friend" message as a PM, so you have my contact numbers. I can at least meet you at the airport and help you get your rifle into South Africa. We can then go somewhere to in comfort sort out the logistics of the next step of your trip to get to Charl's camp. I've also attempted to contact Charl or Infinito Safaris. Have spoken to some former Infinito PH, but not yet to quite the right guy. I agree with Ian - it should be very easy to get you to Charl's camp in a short time, but if you are stuck at the airport without transport and a lot of luggage and a rifle and maybe without a working cellphone .....???? Go get 'em Dogleg! You got some good help on the ground. Those South Africans are wonderfull folks and they always make a plan. Charl is well known and I don't think he'd ever let you down. Next time I'd call Steve Turner or Gracy though.......... .

To the best of my knowledge Gracy doesn't book Canadians. At least they never used to.

Mike: You have some very viable options and individuals who have offered assistance. Did you call Steve Turner as I suggested?

I'm in the SAPS Firearms Office at O R Tambo. However there is no sign of Dogleg. Sure hope he does realize that this is the obvious place to meet? Hold thumbs. Andrew

Andrew I've no idea what his routing is/was & I'm not sure how the timings work on AR but (according to my screen) at 0453 on 28 September, he posted this:
My guess is he probably only arrives in RSA later this afternoon or possibly even tomorrow?

Now a simple hunting trip has turned into an adventure. No matter the outcome you'll be telling this story for a long time.

No doubt!! Dogleg, I'm proud of you for getting on the plane and going, taking the mindset that you'll make a plan!! THAT'S what hunting Africa is about. Rolling with the punches and having an adventure. Something will work out here, whether or not it is the original plan, something will be worth the effort of going anyway. I find this story in stark contrast to the whiney, sniveling report about 6 months back where the RSA gun permits weren't pre-issued and the guy failed to go as a result. Great job of the RSA boys for stepping up and lending a hand, possibly even taking him hunting if Charl doesn't come through. My hats off to you and your sense of adventure!

My spirit of adventure hinged rather heavily on having my airfare already paid, and perhaps a bit of stubborness. Anyway, Im going to board now in Frankfurt, next stop Joberg.

I intend posting this only after Dogleg has said "Hello" and I then know that he is here and the combined responsibility lie with the AR-Team from South Africa to make sure he has a wonderful hunt. In short: He managed to speak to me by cellphone yesterday afternoon from Frankfurt and confirmed that he is landing at about 07:25 this morning. I'm in SAPS office as agreed and waiting. I see my main responsibility to just make sure he gets his firearm into South Africa. That should not be a problem at all. I hope! Then the next steps will be dictated by Dogleg: It should be easy enough to get him a flight to Beira. But, and this is a BIG BUT, in my opinion he should not go there without being sure that he will have someone to get him and his rifle(s) safely into Mozambique. Can someone with real up to date knowledge about the rifle import procedures in Mozambique please inform us if it is wise or foolish for Dogleg to just get on a flight to Beira with his rifle, and battle it out there? The logical thing to do is to just contact Charl by satellite phone and arrange? Problem is this is easier said than done! I've listened to Charls message on his satellite phone many times in the past few days. Any time that I phone, even at 20:00 GMT and shortly thereafter, I get the same message! Now maybe his American agents can help? Go to Infinito Website and see who these guys are. Now I make a big plea to all who have access to Satellite phones to help us [that is the AR of SA-team] get in contact with Charl van Rooyen. Without that critical contact with Charl, we are IMHO "stuffed"! My cell number is + 27 76 301 1120 if anyone wants to talk to us about any aspect of this effort. I’ll have it with me 24/7 and keep it fully charged! OK the next question to think about is: How many days should Dogleg just wait it out in South Africa while trying to contact Charl? There is no doubt that this 870776403293 is indeed the Infinito satellite phone number - the recorded message says so - and that ever since it was posted by UEG I've tried it many times. No go! So how long should Dogleg keep on trying? Also no luck with the confirmed as correct cell phone number. Is there some other option available? Suggestions please! Bearing in mind no-one seems to be able to track Charl (or anyone else in the company) down at all, my advice would be to stick to whatever it says in the contract or was last agreed between both parties because that's what Charl will be expecting. Getting the firearm into Mozambique (if that's what contract or last agreed) says is a different matter and perhaps Indi, Ian or other can comment on that? I'm assuming someone has tried his RSA contact numbers etc just in case there's a wife or staff member around who might know what's going on? Also do we have any RSA members in his neck of the woods that might be able to swing by his place to see if there's anyone around?

I have a vague idea Charl has a relative (possibly Father?) who is a lawyer & Google tells me there's a lawyer of the same name in Groblersdal so if all else fails, it might be worth a call to them to see if they know anything. I would not recommend that Mike flies to Beira without knowing that there is someone there waiting for him. By the sounds of things we don't even know if Beira is the correct airport to fly to. Better for Mike to wait in Johannesburg until he hears from Charl and gets confirmation on where he is supposed to go + when. If Charl has been in the bush without telecoms up to now he should by now by be at or close to whichever airport the pick-up should take place and he should by now have access to a phone and/or the internet. If Mike hasn't heard within a day from his Outfitter he should consider flying back home or find another way of spending his next 10 days (or however many) in SA. Didn't someone say Charl was due to arrange the Moz flight? If so, he'll be expecting the client to be in Jo'burg & assuming he knows where, he might have left a message there. To Charl: Come out, come out, wherever you are!

I would also not recommend to fly to Moz as Charl expects you to fly into Joberg. Stay somewhere around Joberg and hunt some plainsgame until you get a hold of Charl. Did anyone contact his wife/family? I am sure they will know more.
