I shot one Cape buffalo at about 15 yards in a Korongo and another at 45. They both died right away, so they weren't terribly exciting.

Many of the Buff I take with clients are closer than 50 yards and the closest I took last year was 10 yards (first shot) the closest so far this year is 15 yards......closest charge (to date) this year was stopped at 7 yards. (not that I get many of them) ....... but I really love getting up close and personal with them! Lion 20 yards Leopard 7 yards Elephant 15 yards Rhino 25 yards Hippo 30 yard

it seems like game keeps getting further and further, just wanted to here some good stories and give the lads here an opportunity to say how close they got to a toothy tusky horned beast and inspire people to get in close. how many people do you know have a "hollow" trophy that was shot from afar not using much hunting skills? as someone posted, keep the d in d.g. i think this is a good way to inspire old fashioned africa style hunting and let people relive the moments they have always dreamed of and still dream of. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Will I am with you here. I've never shot any African DG, other than one Leopard, over 50 yards. Is it still Dangerous Game when it is over 50 yards? I should ammend this to 'first shot at over 50 yards'.

The shortest shot on a Cape Buffalo was 12 yds, and the longest was 70 yds. The 70 yd Buff was a one shot kill, with a 375 H&H bolt rifle, and a 300 gr Nosler Partition. The 12 yd Buffalo stopped after the fourth shot from two rifles. The first two shots at 15 yds, one from a 375 H&H, and one from my 500/450 NE double to the neck/chest, the next two to the end of the nose with one shot from each rifle 4" apart, at 12 yds. BINGO! Then the shakes started! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I don't know whether feral cattle are considered dangerous, or where they fall on the scale if they are, but I had a rifle fail on a feral cattle cull a few years ago. I had just shot two of them at about 15 yards out of a herd in thick forest. Okie John "The 30-06 works. Period." --Finn Aagaard

Leopard and Lion both around 50 yards, both one shot kills from a Sako .375H&H bolt gun, shooting factory RWS H mantel bullets. The leopard left a long trail of frothy blood and lung matter, with a neat 1" exit, the lion didn't stray far with the mushroomed slug under the skin of the offside.

An elephant at about 50 yards and one buffalo at about 40... but neither those got my adrenaline up like many different encounters with wounded boars at my feet. I guess I just wasn't close enough to the big stuff Kyler

'03 Zambezi Valley - Buff at 35 yds. 1st shot thru the lungs with .375 Swift A Frame. Runs off and find him laying down about 100 yds away. He jumps up and PH hits him in right eye with a .470 and knocks him back down but immediately back on his feet. Firing becomes general from my .375, the .470, and another PH's .500. After 14 shots total he finally goes down for good. My first DG animal, what a rush ! Same year - crawled to about 40 yds. of hippo at rivers edge. One .375 to the brain and he's done. I would guess that some of the more experienced AR members have shot so many under 50 yards that they cannot recall them. I have so few that I can easily remember them all: First buff charge in Tanzania: Lion had previously wounded buff which charged PH and I out of thick tall grass-completely unprovoked by us. We each shot simultaneously into the neck/spine as it lowered its head. Initial shots at 6 yds. It fell at 4 yds. Ph had 500 Jeff and I shot 458 Win mag. Second buff charge also in Tanzania: I wounded buff with a 470. It ran into a thicket and charged us when we entered. PH shot him thru the nose with a 375 cup point solid at 12 yds. Bull elephant in Tanzania: I shot him thru heart/lung area with a 470 at approx. 30 - 35 yds and then shot off a tusk when it spun and came for us. PH then brained it with 500 Jeff at about 25 yds. Male Lion in Tanzania at 35 yds. on foot. It didn't charge. 375 H and H with 300 grain swift A frame. One buff in Tanzania at 40 yds with 458 WM - no charge but had to shoot it again at about 70 yds. One buff in Tanzania at 25 yds. with 450/400 Jeffrey double rifle - no charge - but it ran off and died during the night. PH found it later by following the vultures circling above it. One Hippo in Tanzania on dry land with 470 with 500 gr. Woodleigh solids at approx. 10 yds. One Brown bear in Alaska at 15 yds. with 375 H and H using 300 gr. Swift A Frames. Hunting water buffalo in Australia, I rarely let a hunter shoot one farther than 50 yards, it just easier to keep things under control. We have lots of bowhunters, including myself and 35 yards would be a VERY long shot for them, I have had three bowhunters shoot them at 10, 12 and 15 yards and shot one myself at 18 yards. My partner has had two flat out charges in the last two seasons, one from an unwounded cow that nearly got him and another from a wounded bull that was stopped at 4 1/2 yards.

My last hunt in Zimbabwe with a friend was for two Buff and one Tuskless Ele. the morning i shot my Buff started off looking for spoor as usual, we had seen Elle and a Leopard then some Lion, on inspection of the spoor we found spoor of some Duga boys so we geared up and started tracking up a Jesse bush filled valley following Lion and Buff spoor, I had two softs in the 470NE. It was quite exiting especially when some Impalla decided to vacate our close vicinity. We cotinuied to track the Buff {minus the Lion now but with Ele on a hill above us} over some ridges and beautiful running creeks, the spoor was geting fresher at a muddy spring, one of the trakers anounced we would kill a Buff at nine o'clock, a bit further on the Bulls joined a small herd, we keped on there tracks with the wind in favour into a small valley where we stoped as the Buffalo were spotted bedded down at forty meters, as we glased to find a sutible Bull the wind was felt drifting into th gully, with this the Buffalo took off but as they crossed the far face of the gully we spotted some Bulls, luckily they looked back and I quickly asked the PH Stuart Taylor if the lower bull was good {as it seem to be the pick of them}, on the ok I fired at appox 100m with a good hit. On following up a couple insurance shots were added and the out come was a hard bossed 43incher at nine AM. Not a "50m or less shot" but still a fine DG hunt. Adam C.

Lion at 25 yards (one shot) & a follow up on a buffalo at 30 yards (shot him w/ four 410gr Woodleigh solids behind the shoulder, plus the first inital soft, before he finally tipped over in-slow-motion. He was turning to charge, so he was all "juiced up"! All the tracker could say was "shoot now" as he was moving backward. Both in Tanzania with 416 Rigby.

The vast majority of my buff have been taken in the 75 to 120 yd range. Best as I can remember only 4 have been at less then 50 yds. With elephants My PHs have told me that it is illegal to shoot one at over 40 yds. Mine have ranged from 6 to 39 yds. 465H&H

Charging Cape Buffalo at ten yards after a 3 1/2 hour stalk. My first shot caught some unseen brush ending up with a poorly hit Buffalo, the stalk followed and the Buffalo charged me then turned and charged my wife,I dropped him 7 feet from her. 1 buff, 1 shot, 35 yds,,,bang flop Mike Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?[/] [i] Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
