Self gratifying PHs [and clients who are hopeless shots] have the propensity to create situations that are potentially more dangerous than they really need to be.

And although wounded DG at 50-100yds is not as eminently dangerous as wounded DG at 10yds,
danger & threat still lurks till you finish the 100yd beast off.

Clients who are hopeless shots probably should not be attempting 10-15yds kills on DG,
when they are clearly not proficient at dealing with any unpredictable rapidly unfolding events at such close distances.

I have taken 4 cape buffalo, all with a double rifle. My closest shot was 15 yards and my farthest 25 yards. I have also backed up my best friend on taking his 4 cape buffalo. He took his first one at 9 paces as I stood right beside him. That was exciting! When asked why I hunt buffalo with a double rather than a scoped large bore, I tell folks that I go to Africa to hunt buffalo, not to shoot buffalo. Those of you who have been there up close and personal know what I mean.

My third buff, in Moz, was at 7 yards. I don't think it really counts though. We were on top of a termite mound. Discovered him sleeping. I did wait for him to stand up. It was pretty thick, and I took him through the shoulders. The shot was a little high, and we had some tracking to do.

Elephant-- All free hand at 30 yards or less, two were closer, 10 yards and an unexpected charge at 4 paces.

I know the women and snakes deal well.
Married one that had been bitten twice. I'd wake up in the middle of the night with her just beating the hell out of me while having nightmares about snakes.
Took several yrs for her to get over it. Then like a stupid ass I dropped 10" night crawler on her plate that started 'em all over again.
Guess that's what you get for playing a stupid joke on someone.

1. 39 1/2" buff at about 25 yards. Exciting.
2. 38" buff at about 10 yards. Snuck up on him while he was sleeping - VERY exciting.
3. 42" buff at about 30 yards. Bang! Flop! Too stunned (me) to be excited. Have you ever heard 1800 lbs drop to the ground from the height of his legs? Cool

15 buffalo, none farther than 30 yards and none closer than 15, 416 rigby,400gn cape shock bullets, not a single one bang flop,,,all were close enough to smell and count the flies on. Not sure if a few were actually charges or just running away from the shot and headed towards me but whatever the case,, several got too close. Most of the first shots would have been enough but a second shot sure helped seal the deal. I watch these shows on Tv and the hunter makes a shot and the Ph is saying reload, shoot again and "nothing happens" I reload and shoot...

I've never been to Africa and likely will never
get there. I'm just sayin', if I could only have
one D/G shooting opportunity in my life, I'd
rather shoot a really close, angry critter that
was not of "so-called Trophy quality" than
a "so-called very nice Trophy" that was dis-
tant enough that I didn't have adrenaline
rushing. To me the Trophy is the experience
and the intensity of the memory that's branded
into your brain. This is just my opinion and not
a judgement of those who choose to take longer
shots.

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

I shot a buffalo in Makuti a few years back at 6 paces. A large herd was spotted in some very tall grass. We waited as they approached through the grass. A mature bull suddenly appeared and I opted to take him...

4 shots later he was down inside 30 yds.

Justin got some great video of the muzzle blast as it tore throught the grass towards the bull.

Here's a shindi (mopani squirrel) that well known PH Thierry Labat stopped at under ten yards, fortunately for him....

Jokes aside...here's a leopard that Thierry and Roger Whittall stopped at well under ten yards (3/4 maybe, will have to confirm with Thierry), in some extremely thick stuff down on the Turgwe river. 2006 it was, if I recall correctly. Actually, although they killed it at a few yards, they didn't stop it there. It was so close and moving so fast that its momentum took it crashing into Roger, bowling him over. That was/is a hell of a story...the unlikely hero was a pointer called Bang who still resides at Humani.

I shot my first australian buff at 20 yds with a double, a krieghoff 500/416 on a frontal because I could not find a spot to sneak an arrow through. The double belonged to the outfitter. I shot my second at 18 yds with my 80lb hoyt and a 935 grain arrow with a 300 grain 2 blade ashby broadhead. What a rush. But after I touched the double, I fell in love and now have my own Verney Carron in 500 NE. It is addictive.
