I'm looking for some African art for my office. I really like this print from John Banovich but it's just too big...40"x48". It's called the Power of One.

Any suggestions on other good quality prints, particularly elephant that don't take up so much space? I like big art but 4 feet is a little too big! It also takes a huge frame to make that look right. I can't justify original art prices but let me hear your suggestions. I don't like everything that Banovich does but his elephants and birds are good.

I saw some stuff in the SCI brochure that just came to the house recently. I wss actually considering one of the buff prints for the house....fairly reasonable if I recall.

Also, I think that Adam Clements' "better half" has a shop that has some African art...but not sure about selection, etc.

Good luck.

Do you have any links or contact info for the SCI prints or Clement's shop? I have looked on SCI but I am not a member and haven't been able to find the artwork yet.

I have this one on my office wall. I do not think the artist is a hunter, but my wife picked up the remarked, frmae print as a gift for me.

My wife and I felt like we got the cold shoulder at Banovich's booth at DSC last year so I doubt I will be buying his work. I am sure they are busy with the wealthy but saying "I'll be right with you" or "I apologize for not being able to get to you" is better than completely ignoring someone in my book.

For Adam's wife Chantelle try this link:

NB for Mark or Adam: The websites are very nicely done but can be slow to load...

Thanks for the links Charles. Adam's websites are all like that. Personally I think they are a bit much but that's just me. The drop down functions are also difficult to use but I have noticed that among other African websites for some reason...not uncommon.

Take a look at Steph Walton's web page at http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/-cie/#stephs%20gallery. She and her husband Andy are the camp managers for HHK's Deka area. Her original paintings are just as good as anything you will see at SCI-Reno and about 20% of the cost. I bought an original lion painting from her that now hangs in my office.

You may want to try a couple of art shows or the SCI or Dallas Safari club shows. A group in Tulsa, OK has a show called NatureWorks every year that draws some of the best artists in the country. It is at the end of Feb or first of March.

Neither link took me to Steph's work. I would like to see that if you can get me there.

I do like the Bateman art links. I can't find any prices on any of his stuff though. That probably means they are very expensive! Eeker

I would love to get to the big shows but they are a long ways from here and never good timing for me.

You may have seen the photography by Nick Brandt on another thread. Prints can be made in three sizes I believe and many are beautiful to my eyes.

Yes, I would be extremely happy to obtain some of Brandt's work. I can only find quotes in the thousands of Euros range though. I have sent an inquiry to them.

I like most of his work including the one you posted and this one as well. His work is quite striking.

I sent inquiries to Brandt's gallery and to him as well. We'll see what they say.

I am also looking for an exceptional photo of a leopard cropped in fairly close that is suitable for framing. A B&W leopard done by someone like Brandt would be quite striking.

Another great one would be something like the Bateman link listed above to the old cow. That's great stuff with lots of character. She's the kind of crabby cow that would just as soon crush you as look at you. You have to respect that.

Bryan,

How about taking one of your own pics, tweaking it like you would like and framing it to the size you like. Do it yourself or have a studio do it.

I have about 3 total pics that are not mine from our adventures. Means a heck of a lot more to us than something done from someone else's memory.

I made a collage from ny 2005 Namibia trip and although it is not to everyone's taste I get a lot of positive comments on it. I put one together from this year's trip but was not satisfied so I need to get motivated and try again.

check e-bay for prints of work done by Simon Combes as well as do a google search. he was an ex Kenyan paratrooper who was killed by a Cape buffalo while out for an evening stroll on his farm near Nairobi. i met him at a gallery 10-11 years ago and he was a helluva nice guy. his work is based on a lot of firsthand bush observation and a love of Africa. the detail in some of his larger pieces is unbelievable and, sad to say, has gone up quite a bit in value since his death. he especially loved to depict the great cats of the world

Thanks for all of the suggestions and keep them coming. I did hear back from Brandt and the cheapest thing he has is an 11x19 of the buffalo group for $900. I'll keep looking.

Mark, I hear what you are saying. That's why I want my wife to go sometime to Africa. She is the photographer in the family. I carry a camera but find myself at the end of a hunt with very few photos...then I'm mad at myself for days after that and mildly depressed. I know I'm not the only one that does that! Frowner

I will see if I can find some of Combes' work. Do you have any examples yourself JD?

Brian,

Last year at DSC I bought an elephant print from Joshua Spies. The print makes a wonderful use of light and as you move around the print the lighting on the elephant actually appears to change. It was the most striking print I saw at DSC. And I should add, I am not a art person, for me to buy a print is pretty incredible.

http://www.joshuaspies.com/front.html

The print is the one all the way at the bottom of the link, called Elephant (20x30 Image Size). It really takes seeing the print with a light on it. Joshua is quite an artist.

Yes, I am looking at some of Combes' work right now. I will at least pick up a couple of his books on cats. He seemed to have a knack for getting them done right.

I can respond directly. I bought a Giclee print -- I believe that is a digital print on a canvas. Then I had the canvas stretched and framed at at a frame shop. Looks like a painting. My recollection is that the print was between $300 and $400. It was definitely in that ballpark. Nice people too. Joshua was not there, but I bought the print from his mother who was working at the booth.

By the way Raging Bulls is available for $1450 in your part of the country:

Huh...that gallery is in my town. I had no idea they existed and they have Bateman, Combes & Spies in their inventory. Thanks Mike.

There have been some great suggestions. This is an area I am just not familiar with. Thanks to all and I'm learning a lot.

Maybe a little thinking outside of the box . . .

If you have photos oof your own that you really like, put them in digital format of the size you want and take them to your local graphics shop and ask them to print them on canvas. That's what a "giclee" print is. If you don't have someone in your town that can do it, contact me, I know a guy down the road who does this. He can even print on textured wallpaper to cover your entire wall. You can send him the digital image and he can print it and mail it to you rolled up in a tube.

Then go to an arts & craft store such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby and buy the canvas stretchers (4 pieces of wood that fit together and you wrap the giclee on it and staple it on the back side.

What is becoming popular now is called the "gallery wrap" where the art is displayed on the wall just stretched on the stretcher bars with no frame.

You'll be surprised how inexpensive you can do this.

Good luck!

JDS

And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. They will see sunrises and sunsets such as you cannot imagine, and a land and a way of life that is fast vanishing. And always he will will tell you how he plans to go back. (author: David Petzer)

Great ideas and I appreciate all of them. I love art but know very little about what is available. That Namibian weaving is interesting.

I didn't know Adam Freeman was a member here. What is his handle? This is one of his works that I have seen before. Nice.

I am not impressed with fake art or art with no soul. When I go to Africa I will get art from a local source.I will ask the villagers to meet an artist and when I am convinced he made the drawing or painting out of passion and REAL LIFE obseravations, then I will BUY.

Bryan, that is a terrific painting. I've thought that a lioness backs off at 2/1 odds with hyenas, but a lion always thinks "the more, the merrier"! The hyenas would be re-thinking the situation.

Well, I've got an African video (can't remember the name but it's famous) that shows lionesses getting torn up by hyenas as they are outnumbered. The male lions come in and just tear up the hyenas though on their own. They don't care...in fact, they seem to enjoy it.

I bet it's a National Geographic video called Eternal Enemies. There is an excerpt floating around called Lion-Hyena War that has been edited and rescored. I think Ian Khama's friend Dereck Joubert made the original film.

That's it. Interesting video and I believe they were exposed later for planting that cobra among the lion cubs. That was sad but that young male lion that killed hyenas was just too cool. I think he really enjoyed doing that.

The male lion sort of evidenced an attitude of indifference for a good while, then he sort of reacts like, enough is enough damn it, and that was the end of the matriarch.

Didn't he do that to her replacement also? Seems like he did it twice. Anyway, the male lion was clearly in charge of the situation. You can see the body language of the hyenas change after he joins the fight. They are terrified of him but not of the lionesses. It only took one male lion to switch the pendulum on that fight.

It was interesting how he sits back to watch her squirm with a broken back. I think he really enjoyed the whole thing before snuffing her out.
