He didn't get the penetration that he should have but it was enough. Looked like it might have gone through the shoulder blade which would have hampered it a lot. Yeah, that last throw and up close left a lot to be desired but the buff was already dead. Just goes to show you that spear throwing is quite haphazard, that's why as weapons progressed the spear was left behind. In this day and age it's more of a stunt. | |||

I dont think that last 'throw' when the bull was laying there was meant to do anything other than to check that the bull wouldnt move (was dead).... thats the way I saw that.... he wasnt throwing it to stick it in the bull. If you were just checking to see if the bull was dead,....Why would you throw your only spear??? Why wouldn't you throw a rock, or stick, or a piece of elephant shit??? It wouldn't take much prodding to get a wounded buffalo back on its feet. I think he was a little excited/elated, and just screwed the pouch on that last throw. I will say,.... he more courage than I,...or maybe less brains, because I have no desire to go buffalo hunting with nothing but a sharp stick. Go Duke!! | |||

I recall Mr.Bell telling that he fired on a large herd of CapeBuff, and they all started to panic-stampede in his direction, The tribesmen that stood back at the time he was firing his rifle,then commenced to charge into the approaching stampeding mob. Bells account then tells that those tribesmen proceeded to spear a good number of those approaching buffalo to death. Even the buff that attempted to get away were chased down and speared to death. Bell noted that no tribesmen were gored or injured. "I must say I was rather staggered by what had taken place ; the awe-inspiring charge was apparently a simple running away ; the terrific speed, strength and agility of the story- book buffalo all shown up by a handful of nimble lads armed with soft iron spears ; the formidable buffalo made to cut a very poor figure, and the white man with his wonderful gun made to look extremely foolish." - WDM Bell. | |||

Maybe he was so excited/elated that he didnt think to just throw a rock??? I think everyone standing there had a pretty fair idea the bull was expired, especially considering it had bleed-out.... there's not much coming back from that!! Tim is pretty much "The Man" when it comes to primitive weapons. Love the little clip at the end of each show where he hits the airborne fly with an arrow, causing it to go into a tailspin. He's been perfecting that spear hunting "stunt" for some time now. I've always thought it was pretty impressive to be able to pull of some of the things he's done on his show, and he always presents it with a good dose of humor to boot. | |||

Am I the only one who suspect the buffalo had something wrong with him? The only animals we have ever been able to get that close to on safari have been sick of one thing or another. Healthy ones don't let you get that close. | |||

That is really cool IMHO. I saw another video in Oz where the guy tried it at 5 meters with a young juvenile bull & got charged. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKI1xmtf5Ck He ran around a termite mound and shot it with a hand gun quick draw! I'm sure I couldn't but bet there's a heap of guys who could. I've been almost that close to buffalo, I suppose, often by chance though, not stalking. Having said that, I've been with hunters who have shot buffalo at well under ten yards. My brother's tracker has pulled hairs from a sleeping elephant's tail...Of course it can and has been done, there are some highly skilled stalkers out there. I am not a proficient stalker, my breathing becomes irregular as we get closer to the dangerous beast, and I tend to step on crunchy leaves at the wrong moment. | |||
