I have:-

Anschutz 22lr - 6power doctor scope
Mauser 6.5x55 - 6power swarovski Nova
Mauser 7x57 - 6power swarovski Nova
Mauser 9.3x62 - 1.5-6 power Swarovski

The 6.5 is loaded with ballistic tips and does everything a 243 can plus a bit more, the 7x57 is a luxury and will be loaded with mid weight round noses for just about everything and the 9.3 is for moose and boar and the fabled African trip that will require an inheritance and result in divorce.

The big bore yet to come, but most probably a Ruger or CZ in .485 win mag or .416 Rigby topped with a Leupold 1,75-6x32E wich happen to be there in the drawer just waiting....
Why... all are working guns in dependable calibres for their use, and ammo is found almost worldwide. With this battery I feel comfortable to take on everything if I do my part.

Good topic! These are my choices:
First the three I currently own:
Anschuetz .22 WMR with 3-9X40. Small stuff and the plinking mission :-)
Swedish Mauser in 6.5X55 with Nightforce 5.5-22x56, for small and medium game at long range.
Husqvarna m/98 in 9.3x62 with Aimpoint 5000, for everything else in these parts.

And, on the day somebody dumpt a truckload of gold bricks in my front yard and I can finaly go to Africa of my dreams: A Mauser 98 magnum in .416 Rigby.

I suppose the use of the word "rifle" in the original question means that shotguns do not count in the total, because everyone needs a pair of those, right?

Boy life would be boreing with only four rifles. If I had to it would be a .223, a Marlin Levergun in 45/70 or .450, a .338, and a .416.

Yes Im leaving out a true "light medium bore, I actually typed "7X57" but changed it. I almost included a front stuffer but left it out ; Its just that being a Yank I would feel naked without a good levergun, which is a Yankish thing to have.

I could just retain my .338 and keep the larder full, as well as hardly be a "naked ape with no defense". But somehow this thread demands a bigger bore too, so I picked the one I want, a .416. Yes I know one of the .458's would be better in case the Odd elephant blundered into camp, but really.

I do feel bad about leaving out the 7X57. I'd never be without a .338.........10

.300 Mag (I'm leaning toward a RUM) ultra light. Like a Rifles Inc 4.75 pounder. With a 3.5 - 10 Leupold
.416 Mag (either Rem or Rigby) With a detachable 1.5 - 5 Leupold.

Now, my old faithful 7 mag and my .375 H&H may take offense at this list, but I had to make the call...
I guess I'm gonna have to run out and buy the .300 mag... oh bummer!!

FN FAL in 308. I thik most know what a rifle like this and the 100 mags, and 2000 rounds of ammo I have are for. Peep sighted, of course.

Mauser 98 in 7x57. Will do all my non dangerous game work. 175's for Elk moose and the like. 162's for blackies/deer and anything else that wont stomp or chomp.

Enfield in either 470 capstick or 505 Gibbs. That will most likely end any arguments with Jumbo, Simba, or Ursus Scareyus.

Knock it down to one and Ill take my FAL. While I truley respect the four legged dangerous beast's....it seems to me I have a much better chance of being prey to the 2 legged variety.

If I had to choose 4 of my rifles they would be the following.

257 Roberts. It spans varmints to smaller big game easily. Light recoil and very light weight.

300 WM. Works great for all but the biggest big game and can reach out to long range if necessary.

375 Weatherby. Has all the great characteristics of the 375 H&H with a little more range and punch. A great choice for a one rifle safari.

458 WM. It just works on the biggest of game without having to be built on a huge, heavy and bulky rifle.

Ok this is weird, just posted about the 375 a few minutes ago. Was thinking about calling a local dealer (same one I got the 300WM from) to see if he could locate a 375 for me.

Before I had the cahnce to call him, he called me to say he just got one in, and it's probably exactly what I'm looking for.

My turn: Here's what I have chosen and why: 22LR, .223 Rem, .308 Win., .375 H&H

.22 LR: Winchester Model "52B Sporting" with Lyman Alaskan 4x.
REASON: Never fails, accurate, ammo available anywhere in the world, deadly on all critters up to and including small deer / antelope species - quiet. Excellent for daily marksmanship practice.

.223 REM: Colt's AR-15 accurized match rifle, 1:7 twist 20" Bbl with 2 optics; Aimpoint- comp-M2 and Nightforce 2.5-10x Illuminated tactical scope.
REASON: 5.56 / .223 is now available in so many loadings and in so many locations worldwide that this caliber makes the most sense in the snall varmint family. The accuracy of today's gas guns rivals that of most bolt guns and the multiple-rapid-fire hit capability is a sure winner on moving targets. Good out to 600 yards on coyotes for example.

.308 Win. (7.62 x 51 NATO): Winchester model 70 action light tactical rifle with 1:10 twist 16" bbl. with Illuminated Leupold 3-9x MK4 Mil-dot reticle. SWR Supressor / muzzlebreak interchangability. Mounted on a McMillan M40-A1 stock.
REASON: Ammo available everywhere in the world, excellent ballistics, tons of great projectiles available, proven killer, mild recoil, super long barrel life, etc, etc, etc. For all non DG the .308 in capable hands will do the job.

.375 H & H Magnum: Winchester Super Grade (pre-64) with S & B 1.5 -6x #7 reticle.
REASON: Ammo everywhere, Can kill everything on the planet out to very long ranges. Great for DG. Rifle design is a proven winner and will outlast me and my children.

Those are my choices based on personal experiences.

Since the question was four RIFLES, I would choose:

22lr- Ruger 10/22
223 - Varmint weight barrel bolt gun
300 Mag- Medium weight sporter
375 H&H - M70

But, I would cheat and get Savage 223 and 300 rifles and have a whole bunch of extra barrels.

I'm a little late with this, and i haven't read all the comments, so this may be redundant!

My calibers would be:

.22 LR/20ga combo Irons and 2X compact scope

.243 MCA Mannnlicher Shoenauer, irons, and 4x standard scope

.30-06 Irons, and 4Xstandard scope in QD mounts

.375 FL magnum double rifle, with irons, and QD mounted scope 1.5-5X20

I could do it with less, but if I had those, I would not be hendered no matter the target, and all that ammo is available any place where hunting is allowed! ANDdddddddddddddd I just happen to have all these in my vault, and all well used in the field!

Only four? I'll limit it to serious "hunting" rifle then:


1. .338 Win Mag I have a Pre-64 M70 all tricked out on a McMillan stock. I would not replace this rifle! Great for longer ranges. Usually holds 2" at 300 yards.

2. 9,3x74R Chapuis double rifle w 1.5-6x Schmidt&Bender scope and 20 gauge bbls. Terrific rifle. ( I also have a 9,3x52 CZ American with which I could not be more pleased.) The 9,3s are great bush calibers that are disproportionately effective without being a pain to hike up the hill or when you pull the trigger.)

3. .416 Rigby as a heavy-medium rifle. Have a CZ 550 hog back, bedded and cross bolted, with a trigger job and a 1.5-5x Leupold IR scope on a rail between the bridges ... a great rifle. Shoots better than 1 1/2" at 200 yards. I would have the stock on this one redone to a more classic style

4. .470 NE Searcy double. I have a Field Grade that has been great. In the best of all possible worlds I might upgrade it to a PH.

(I'm pretty close to having what I want. I do find that 4 is not enough. I like two additional rifles done in foul weather gear that I'd have difficulty parting with ... a .308 Win and a .375 H&H. They get used when the snow flies and the world gets slippery.)

I would rather have the rifles as another female in the house complaining about how many rifles I have.

.22lr kimber, 3-9x scope, silencer. (very small stuff and plinking/ teaching kids how to shoot)

.243win bull barrel, bipod, scope variable up to 18x, (up to hartebeest sized game, you can shoot 55gr at fairly long range and for varminting and 110gr for bush hunting)

.338lapua, 3.5-10x50 scope. (up to eland, also good for long shots at large animals, great for lion and leopard. Also good for long range back up shots on wounded antelope)

.416rem custom built, 1.5-5x20 scope, quick detachable mounts, (big stuff)

In the end it's up to personal preference, but this is what I'd pick.

Since the world's a pretty big place and my hunting isn't complete without birds and other assorted little critters, even though the question was for rifles, my last choice would absolutely be one of my trusty scatterguns.

Therefore, # 4 would be one of my beloved 12 bores.

I looked back and the original post was 4 RIFLES to hunt the world. It is easily done and while I am too much of a gun nut to do so, it would probably be the wise choice. I consider the 22lr a given. A decent bolt 22 is going to cost around a $100 or less so not really effecting the hunting budget. So lets not count it in the 4 besides you probably already have grandads.

In our picks we must keep in mind that the kind of person that only has 4 rifles to hunt the world is going to be the kind that wants easy to find ammo that is efficient and inexpensive. Most of the people that I know that are like this don't reload so, throw out the wildcats. The light rifle should be a varmit specific type. I would go with the .223. If one was worried about it being a military cartridge I believe the 22-250 would be the alternative. While it is not as effecient as the 223 it would still be accepted into most conservative Babtist churches.

The next step I think should be an pronghorn caliber. My choice would be the 25-06 or 6.5x55 in that order. It would serve you well from coyotes to whitetail. A person could play with this a little. As much as I hate to admit it a 243 may work here or you could go to the upper end and say a 264 win mag or 270.

Next would be Big deer and elk class of rifle. My choice would be the 30-06. Again I am not sure about ex-military cartridges and all that. If that was a worry I would go with the 300 win mag.

For the big guy I would go with the 375 H&H. I see no need for anything bigger for our 4 rifle man. He is not a PH and a 375 will get the job done. With only 4 rifles our hunter should be very profieciant with all of his rifles as he only has a few to go to the range with so he should be able to put that bullet where it needs to go.

As far as what brand type it would be what you like. I would make the three biggest rifles on the same action and set them up with identical stocks and safety types. The varmit rifle would be just that.
