.30'06
.375 H&H

I'd lose the .223 for a .22 Long Rifle if we are talking purely sporting arms...I'd trade the .30'06 for a .308 if we are not talking sport arms only.

Since Canadian Lefty asked what we might change since this thread was up earlier I would drop the 300RUM from my list. My list would now be:
22LR
223 Rem (35gr-80gr bullets)
30-06 (100-220gr bullets)
375H&H (225-350gr bullets)

The four in my cabinet at the moment after years of trading, selling and buying is:

22 LR, Ruger M77/22 with Leupold 6x42
308 Winchester, Kimber Montana with Zeiss Victory 2,5-10x50
35 Whelen, Ruger M77 with Zeiss Victory 3-12x56
375 Ruger, Ruger Hawkeye Africa with Leupold VXIII 2,8-8x36

The scopes on the 308 and 35 kind of mirror the the dusk, dawn and moonlit night hunting we do here for red and roe deer.

I also feel that a 375 of one kind or another is mandatory, and for me represent the upper recoil level for comfortable shooting.

The 22LR would be a the current Kimber bolt gun, since it features a Model 70-type safety, the same as my big game rifles. The 223 Rem. would also be based on a Model 70 action, but customized and built for accuracy as well as portability -- not too heavy, and not too light.

The 300 Win. Mag. and 416 Rem. Mag. tandem can easily take care of all of the world's big game hunting under all conditions. Again, these are custom Model 70s that are built for absolute reliability, perfect feeding, balance, durability, and accuracy.

All you really need is a .416 of whatever denomination. It will truly do it all. I've taken everything from elephant to duiker in Africa, to whitetails and turkey on this side of the pond with a .416 Rem. It's good to 200 yards certainly and 300 in a stretch.

A .30-06 seems to be a must. Versatile, and covers everything up to the largest of game if you don't have a .416 in hand.

A stopper. A .458 Lott, a .470 NE, .450 NE or a .500 NE.

That's all you really need as I see it. Everything else is gilding on the lily, but don't tell that to my wife.

4 rifles that cover everything and will have ammo available world wide:

1) 22lr (no hunter should be without one, great for high volume practice to sharpen your skills)

2) 30-06

3) 375 (ruger or H&H, take your pick)

4) 458 Lott (450 Rigby if you will reload, in my opinion a better round but ammo is hard to get most places)

It's not the caliber of the rifle that matters - It's the caliber of the man behind it.

1. 6,5x55
2. 7x64
3. .300 Win. Mag. (or 8x68)
4. 9.3x62
5. .416 Rem. Mag. (or Rigby)

Number 2 and 4 are not really necessary.
But I like them :-)

If one hunts regulary Ele maybe a big double,
e.g. .470 or .500.

And not Forget a 12/70 O/U shotgun.

That should handle everything and everywhere...

22lr Ruger 10/22
308wn or 30-06 (would be happy with either)
300wn (just because I like it)
375h&h (if I could only have 1 rifle, this is it)
Under normal circumstances ammo SHOULD be available for this selection.
I have in the last few years really become a fan of the 308, more choices in ammo, flat shooting & modest recoil.

PS: the reason I choose the .22 hornet over the .22 LR is the reloadin factor.

Honestly, if I was ever in the unfortunate predicament of having to replace all my rifles, this would be what I would get and be happy hunting everything for all time.

223 Rem on an AR-15
300 Win Mag on a M70
375 H&H on a M98

I realize that some will want bigger than the 375 H&H, but that's the upper end of my recoil tolerance.

I'd swap out the 223 rem to a 220 Swift for a more classic combo and still keep the 270 win, 300 win mag and the 416 rem mag.
