[i] Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

This about covers it~!!!!!

My choices:

12 gauge and .22 Remington drilling with QD scope;
.30-06 M98;
.375 M98;
.450 Double (or a .500/.416 double with scope).

Mine would be as follows:
1). .22
2). .300 Wby.
3). .375 H&H

I know it was four rifles, and I would be well served by a .22 centerfire or something smaller than the .300 and bigger than the .22, but I like bird hunting a lot, so give me my Remington 870 Wingmaster with the 3.5" chamber.

This would be really boring, but all too practical:

1. 22lr (Practice)
2. 243 Win (anything under 250 pounds)
3. 338 Win Mag (250 to 1000 pounds)
4. 458 Win Mag (Big Bears or anything over 1000 pounds)

Sadly enough, I have 22 rifles in the safe and only have one of the above...

If I had to build a rifle battery for traveling the world it would be...

Winchester 70 long action (pre 64)
24" barrel .270 Winchester
McMillan synthetic stock
Pachmayr recoil pad
Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40mm LR scope
(matte finish, wide duplex reticle)
Butler Creek flip open caps
Butler Creek neoprene sling

Winchester 70 long action (pre 64)
24" barrel .338 Winchester magnum
McMillan synthetic stock
Pachmayr recoil pad
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm scope
Butler Creek flip open caps
Butler Creek neoprene sling

Winchester 70 long action (pre 64)
24" barrel .458 Winchester magnum
Express iron sights
McMillan synthetic stock
Pachmayr recoil pad
Swarovski 1.5-6x42mm scope
QD scope rings/mounts
Butler Creek flip open caps
Safari style sling

Remington 870 shotgun
28 inch barrel with remchokes
21 inch barrel w/ catilever
Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x42mm scope
Synthetic stock and forend
Butler creek flip open caps
Butler creek neoprene sling

I stayed away from the military calibers, and I think that you would really be limiting your selection if you didn't include a shotgun in the mix. If you didn't or couldn't have the shotgun for some reason I would swap it for a 22LR, probably my Ruger 10-22 with a Leupold 4-12 scope on it. This would cover all of your small game hunting.

OK

For 4 guns:

22lr - Rugar 10/22
30-06 - Win mod. 70 classic
375 H&H - Win pre 64 mod 70
12ga - Rugar red label

if 3:

22lr
30-06
375 H&H

if 2:

22lr
375 H&H

if 1:

375 H&h

the 22lr makes more sense for only 1 gun, but I used the 375 to shoot my first animal not covered with feathers; a Cape Buffalo.

Here are my choices:

22LR

223 Rem.

300 Win. Mag.

416 Rem. Mag.

The 22LR would be a the current Kimber bolt gun, since it features a Model 70-type safety, the same as my big game rifles. The 223 Rem. would also be based on a Model 70 action, but customized and built for accuracy as well as portability -- not too heavy, and not too light.

The 300 Win. Mag. and 416 Rem. Mag. tandem can easily take care of all of the world's big game hunting under all conditions. Again, these are custom Model 70s that are built for absolute reliability, perfect feeding, balance, durability, and accuracy.

I am not nearly the rifle expert that some are here, but ignorance has never held me back in the past.

First, some clarification - Rifle means rifle so that includes rimfire as well as centrefire. Rifle does not mean shotgun. A shotgun battery suitable for hunting worldwide is worthy of its own separate discussion. On that basis, here is my selection:

22 rimfire - accurate bolt action with suitable scope. Good for ground squirrels, all manner of pests, and coyotes at close range. Can be fired out of the living room window without shattering the fine china.

270 Winchester - bolt action with suitable variable scope. Will handle coyotes, all species of deer, pronghorns, caribou and elk in a pinch.

338 Win Mag - bolt action with suitable variable scope. Will handle everything else in the world, with the exception of thick-skinned dangerous game.

458 Win Mag - claw extractor bolt action with suitable, fixed power, removable scope and iron sights. Good compromise between ammo availability, action size, recoil and stopping power.

Now if you restrict this list to centre fire only, I would add a .223 in a varmint weight bolt action and suitable variable long range scope. Otherwise the 22 rf and the 270 will just have to do!

That about covers what I would want to hunt the world. If it were a perfect world they would all be built on Mod. 70 Classic actions by Sterling Davenport, Biesen and/or Echols.

1. Marlin 60 22 lr (a gift from my wife)

2. Mauser 8x57JS built by a member here with folding leaf sights

3. Mint 1956 Browning A-5 shotgun in 12 bore

What is missing is a big bore but mine would be a black powder rifle because I don't think I would ever be able to afford to hunt dangerous game in Africa - a 500 or 577 BPE would be really nice! Cool

Good hunting, everyone!

Well, without reading the whole thread to see all other responses I'll risk being repetitive. The way you are putting it makes me also think a couple other things through when deciding, namely:

Ammo availability, since many people that are just hunters and not gun nuts don't have the desire/time etc. to reload

ease of entry fee for getting the rifle

Therefore:

223
30-06
375H&H
458Win/Lott

All in good solid factory rifles. I would spend the money to insure pure functionality without any issues, beyond that, for the purpose you requested, I wouldn't fancy them in any way. I would probably go with Weaver optics on the two smaller as I like the cost to quality level and then Leupold on the larger since I like good eye relief. For me the three larger would all be fixed power, 223 a variable.

Total cost of entire battery if you look around and aren't going for fancy should be under 3500, i.e.

Savage 223 500 + Weaver 3-9 145 = 645
Weatherby Vanguard 06 476 + weaver 6x 136 = 612
CZ550 375 740 + L&S 2.5x 270 = 1010
CZ550 458 850 + L&S 2.5x 270 = 1120
Total = 3397

I'd say

22/250-243 - small game gun. works great on duiker and other small antelopes etc. bucks wind good and shoots out to 300m fine.

30/06 - 308 win - 300 win mag
- excellent on all animals unless they are very very big.... preferance is the 300wm, although they can be punchy. this is the factory load gun, you should be able to get ammo in one of these calibers in many gun stores around the world.

416 rigby - big bore with enough ummph to do it all and with the right scope also able to sort out all things a 375 can.

12gauge remington-mossberg-winchester pump gun.
- with a multi choke barrel it'll shoot birds, small game and of course with some 00 buck will be good for the two legged talking critters as well if needed.

cheers, tm

Canuck, I would also want a scatter gun, but the man said rifles. That being said if I had to take four rifles from my safe for life time use it would be:

22-250 Savage

243 Browning

338 WM Winchester

375 H&H Savage.

Those are in my safe - I may change mine a bit if I could add from the open market and leave the 375 in exchange for a 416 Taylor.

One of my criteria would be that at least one of the chamberings is a commonly available military cartridge worldwide, and that all are readily available worldwide in factory loadings as well as in component form for reloading. That said, I would choose the following four as a hunting rifle battery for all game worldwide:

.223 Rem/5.56 NATO
.308 Win/7.62 NATO
.375 H&H
.458 Win Mag

It would be much easier to have five rifles, and in that case I'd add .22LR, but the fact that one is dependent on factory ammo since it's not reloadable caused me to leave it off the list of four hunting rifles.

Of the list above, I already have all but the .223 in hunting rifle form (I have a .22-250 in that slot).
