I have a good friend heading to Moyowosi Tanzania in July for a 28 day Lion hunt. If along the way an elephant comes across their path he is more than willing to take it. His question is: "What is the average size of elephant he can expect in the Moyowosi?"

I think any legal elephant in Tanz will be a pretty good elephant. The trouble will be seeing a legal one. He should not turn down a legal ele, IMO, unless the PH says to do so. Makes lots of lion bait, too. I haven't been in the Moyowosi, but was just east of there in the bordering Kigosi in 2006. Did not see many eles there. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. The Tanzanian ivory is longer and thinner...A 40+ pounder should be possible... BwanaMich could give a better answer... 50 inches from lip to end 65lbs. Here is my ele from the Selous... Mike

Saeed, Would you please in the future prevent any additional posting of this most gorgeous elephant? I get irreversibly sick every time I see it. Thanks. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Last year 2 hunters from Florida and 1 German hunter shot Eles in the 55-70 Pound Class in Kigosi. I saw 2 nice Pairs of Ivory from Game Frontiers Moyowosi Block also taken in 2007. Big Tuskers are around but difficult to find... Seloushunter Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Parts of Massailand ( especially the Longido Block ) you cant get Ele on License. In Western TZ ar no Problems at all with Elepant Hunting License. Seloushunter Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

I saw several elephants in Moyowosi when hunting there in 2005 but I would say they were about about 30-40 pounders. My PH said that they were not hunting any of them at that time "but maybe would in 10 years." We also came across one that had been poached. I don't think your buddy should count on an ele on this trip.

There has never been any agreement between TZ and Kenya about elephant hunting in Kigosi, which is in far western TZ. Longido, which lies next to the Kenya border was the area where their park jumbo crossed the line and got shot.

if im not mistaken there is an agreement between tanzania and kenya that you can not shoot elephants 200 kms from the border, that includes longido. before i drift of the subject, moyowosi is not known for elephants even though there have been a couple shot but i wouldnt hold my breath on it. For an elephant to be legal in tanzania the tusks have to be either 1.50mtrs or 15 kgs in weight.

Uplandhunter, My cousin and uncle hunted Gombe GCA which is on the South border of Moyowosi last October for buffalo. They saw herds of elephants on several occasions, but nothing big. I don't remember seeing many/any outfitters in Western Tanzania even offering elephant hunts. When I do see something about elephants in Western Tanzania it's usually: "and if you see a legal elephant you can take it for the trophy fee". I'm sure there are people who know way more than me on this subject, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about the elephant unless the outfitter said otherwise. I thought I might add that we are going to be hunting in the Moyowosi in October. And after having read George Leonard Herter's book, I am sending 100 barrels of peanut butter to be spread around all the tree trunks around the waterholes that elephant frequent. I am sure of getting my 100 pounder! I love reading book by George Leonard Herter! Hey Bill, why don't start writing like old George?

Saeed, I try to spice it up as I assume George did, but only receive insults in return. https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...1804/m/621104078/p/2 "INCOMING! INCOMING! AT 2 O'CLOCK!!" yells the PH. A gray blur comes weaving through the thorn trees faster than my eyes can focus. A branch breaks and shifts my mind into the first gear of fear. I stumble backwards as I try to raise the double rifle to my shoulder. Sweat pours from my brow obscuring the oncoming demon as my sweating hands put a death grip on my rifle's stock. Now the blur bursts from the bush, blocking out the sun like the shadow of death. In a last desperate effort to save myself I shoot from the hip as blackness towers overhead. Diana has shined upon my plight as the 500 gr. solid has taken a savior's course. The tingling blood flow of life returns to my body as a gray ghost rains down upon me. I can tell you that was one dead-ass dove. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Wonderful story, until the last line! Do you really use solids on dove? I use #8. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;
