Here's the deal. You have just been given a free two week safari to hunt Cape Buffalo.

Question:
Which of the two rifle packages do you want?
Defend your choice.

Rich

Choices:
A. you and your PH are packing 9,3x62's
B. you are packing a 416 Rigby and the PH has a 500 3"NE double

Another none of the above.

I don't own nor do I have any experience shooting anything with a 9.3x62, a 416 (of any breed) or a 500 double.

I would either have my Remm 700 in 458 win mag loaded with 500 grain Barnes X bullets, or my Remm 700 loaded with 300 grain Barnes X bullets,or my Chapuis loaded with 286 Grain Nosler Partitions.

If this hunt occurs after April I would take my Searcy 470NE that I will hopefully be getting by then.

Get over yourself. You are not in Ganyana's class and never will be.

Yes, you have every right to disagree with him or any other writer, but this is less about the disagreement and more about you being a one trip wonder internet expert who is trying to elevate his status by trashing someone with actual experience.

Rich,

I wouldn't hunt with a 9.3 because I have other rifles I'm more familiar with. I personally do not like the 416 Rigby for various reasons and I don't know any PH's well heeled enough to own let alone shoot a 500.

Something to consider. The guy with the 9.3 is far more likely to shoot it quite a bit than the guy with the 500. Proficiency before horse power. Correct?

Mark,

that is a fallacy perpetuated by guys who are recoil shy. Guys with big bore rifles tend to be more involved in the shooting/hunting business and shoot more. I have over 400 rounds thru my 550 Gibbs this year, about the same in my 505 Gibbs, and at least 500 rounds thru my 450 Dakota, 404 Jeffery, and the 416 Rigby.

Buzz Charlton shoots a big double, seen his videos? So do most other experienced PH's, those who have not been converted to the atom smashing power of the 9,3x62.

Rich,

"Buzz shoots a big double?" Really? I'm not a collector of hunting videos but in the two videos I have of Buzz doing his thing he is shooting I believe a Ruger in 416 Rigby. Perhaps he has purchased a double recently? I beg to differ about how many expereinced PH's shoot doubles. I've hunted with three PH's so far that used them. In two of the three cases the rifles were gifts. PH's as a rule cannot afford to buy or shoot a big double. What you like to shoot and how much you shoot it has no bearing on what is reality for a PH who has to buy his ammo OTC. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Priced a box of 500's lately? A guy making $100-$200 a day cannot afford such an inpractical luxury.

I'm not one of the 9.3 wonder caliber club but I am completely convinced that as a client you do not NEED a genuine big bore to kill buffalo with. If a big boomer floats your boat that's fine but trying to say or at least imply that anything other than a big bore is inadequate is pure bunk.

If the PH was Ganyana I would be glad to carry my 9.3x62 as I know I would be walking a lot more than I would be shooting and when it came time to shoot we all know that bullet placement and construction count far more than bore size. Plus the quickest way to make dangerous game non-dangerous is to hit them right the first time and to keep shooting till they are down.

Now if I screwed that up and we had to wrinkle some poorly hit, thoroughly pissed off buff, hiding in the Jess along the lower Zambesia, out of his cover I would prefer my 458 and am sure Ganyana would prefer his double.

Since the only thing that penetrates better than a 45/70 is the same bullet going slower ...

Do we get to keep the rifles? In either case, I would prefer the .500 and my PH can chose between the two others.

Buzz shoots a .416 Rigby but he is so quick with the bolt that it's like having a double, only better, more like a quad.

BTW....

I thought Gayana's article was interesting.
I don't think he wants anyone to rush out and buy a 9.3x62 strictly for buff hunting. However if you have one that you have shot thousands of times and killed hundreds of animals with and you have good bullets I think it is up for the job.

Just like a 30-06 in Alaska. It may not be the best for big moose, and it is marginal for the big bears. BUT if it is what you have and you have the experience to seal the deal then you can probably get away with a little more than someone with a cannon who can't shoot and who has little to no experience.

I'll take a marginal caliber with premium bullets in the vitals over a gut shot with a cannon any day!!

Idaho SS,

I did not bother to read your PM as anything you have to say to me can be said in public. I have exactly 2 hunting trips to Africa and I am neither disputing nor acknowledging the basis of your argument. I am condemning the self agrandizing methods which you use to make your argument. In other words: It's not so much the message as it is the person delivering it.

lhook7,

that is the problem with your post, oh dense One. The message is the reason for the post. Self-aggrandizing, I didn't think you could spell words with that many letters.

And, you are a liar as well. If you hadn't read the PM you wouldn't have answered it here. Life is hard, it is twice as hard if you are fallacious and stupid. I don't think you can fully comprehend the discussion. No argument here, just a difference of opinion.

Everyone else here seems to have gotten the point, the efficacy of the caliber as a DG "Stopping cartridge" VS something like the 450 Dakota I used, except you. THAT was the point.

regards,

Rich

And here is what I was responding to:

"Lhook and McCray,

that would give me how many more trips to Africa and Cape Buffalo killed than the two of you combined?"

This is from your earlier post. I imagine you are too drunk to remember making it. That is the only reason I can think of for some of your posts.

Don't postulate your own shortcomings onto others. If you are a problem drinker, deal with that first. Then come here and try to add to the discussion.

Since your attention span is about as long as your _ _ _ _ _ I'll redirect you again. Follow closely, this gets complicated for a mouth breather like you.

We are discussing the efficacy of the 9,3x62 as a DG Stopper. Not a shooter, a close-in encounter stopper. Try to stay on task, okay?

You can kill Buffalo, undisturbed and unaware of your presence, in open country with an FN-FAL or a fricking AK-47.

regards,

Rich

Sorry, I could not help pointing that out.
