KarooMy opinion is hunt anything that has a sustainable population. Be wary of taking an animal just for the sake of it, in particular the smaller critters (non-antelope) whose population status you do not know.
They may be threatened locally and you will be doing some damage.

LeopardtrackCheetah, Canned Lion, those really tiny Duikers
26 January 2011, 10:22
SevensNever had much interest in shooting a crocodile. Maybe it was all the pet lizards I had as a kid.
No interest in shooting anything I can't import into the USA (like a cheetah). Also don't have any interest in darting anything. Other than that, I don't discriminate. I often joke I'd like my trophy room to be like half of Noah's ark ... one of everything.
26 January 2011, 11:40
WinkIm also not interested in giraffe, but from the number of posts expressing the same decision, I guess there must be something about them that gives them special status. I wonder what that is.

BrettAKSCII certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone any legal and sustainable hunting. That said my thoughts: Rhino is right out! I grew up reading about rhino hunting in the bush of East Africa. For ME that's what rhino hunting is. For ME rhino hunting today is dead. Canned lion (anything really) not a chance! Introduced species not a chance. Animals behind a high fence not a chance. Not much interest in a cheetah.
Can't say I'm much interested in the little antelope. I suppose I'd shoot one for the BBQ though. Hippo in water don't particularly interest me. If I was in a hurry for bait I suppose I'd shoot one. Otherwise I'd just as soon do it on land or in small pools up close or not at all.
Lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, croc, girraffe, ostriche, antelope, gazelles, baboons, pigs, ect, ect IT'S ON!!!!!!!!!!

fairgameBaboon is a very under rated game hunting specie.
To shoot any baboon is relatively easy but to identify a big dog baboon in a troop and to stalk it through bush is often difficult and offers for some very fine hunting indeed. The alpha male and other big dogs nine times out of ten will outwit you.
The shooting is often freehand and quick.
I have met many who were not interested in 'shooting' baboon but once they had hunted one it was a different matter.

there is just something abour watching a 4000lb, 20' tall animal running as fast as it can then suddenly it's legs just quit working. It's like watching a train wreck, that you and your little bang stick caused, good fun (not for the giraffe).

I wasn't aware of that. But, they still aren't native to Southern Africa. I would just rather hunt antelope in Africa. I get all of the deer hunting I want at home. That's not what I come to Africa for.
As far as the giraffe, that's my wife's rule. She is fine with me hunting anything else, but not giraffe.

adamhunterThe only animals I would not care to hunt/shoot in Africa are:
Cheetah
Ostrich
Giraffe
If cheetah were ever importable, I'd like to take one of those too.

Oday450Never had any interest in giraffe or croc. There's no rationale or bias against them - just no interest. Also not terribly interested in ostrich or hippo in the water. However, if needed for bait both hippo and giraffe would be taken.

TerryRFor me it would be:
Rhino - rifle or dart
Giraffe
Lion
monkey
Cheetah
Not sure about Baboon
No real reason other than they just don't interest me.
26 January 2011, 22:11
FishN4EyesFor me it's giraffe, ostrich, the duiker, steenbok, klipspringer type antelopes and maybe elephant.
For some reason the small antelope just don't do it for me but some guys love'em.
Starting to change my mind a little on the elephant, definitely a different hunt than what I thought/imagined. Cost would probably be the prohibitive factor now for elephants and lions.
Everything else? Game on!!!!!!!!!

Yes baboons are fun to hunt. I find it very hard to stalk a big group. Smarts beast and the males make a fine trophy.
Someone told me they are good eating but I have little interest in try it

ledvmSpecies like lion, rhino, and ele...need folks to hunt them...albeit...ethically.
Granted...all cannot afford these hunts...but for those who can...the species benefits.
As a community...we as hunters...need to make sure all our hunts are ethically conducted...and...we harvest animals under ethical guidelines...and NOT pressure our guides to just get us something just because we paid.
Most Native Africans (I know I am jumping off in it here) would just as soon not have to contend with rhino, ele, lion, hippo, and even leopard and buffalo. To them...they are a hazard to life...get in the way...and pose threat.
Now...when those animals loose their value...they WILL cease to exist in wild places. Those wonderful places near and dear to our hearts will be used to cultivate crops, graze cattle, and make charcoal (at least until all of the trees are gone).
Aaron Neilson has stated it many times...and ...it is true...hunting is the key to preserving these species.
Each will have likes and dislikes...and each to their own tastes...but...don't "NOT HUNT" something because you think you are saving the species. If you are...you are already on your way to becoming an anti-hunter and you are NOT helping the species.
Hunt..albeit hunt ethically...and support pro-hunting conservation, science, and legislation!

Now this is FACT and not fiction - Masailand is a classic example of one of those wonderful places going to waste.
Everyone is screaming about the proposed highway through the Serengeti but nobody has given any thought to the topographical destruction taking place through overgrazing, tree felling, land clearing, poaching, poisoning of lions, etc, etc....I wonder what will become of the migratory route in 10 years from now?

nampomWhen I saw the heading of post I already knew Giraffe would be at the top of the list, on the first night of every hunt I always ask the hunter what will he not shoot the answer 9 times out of 10 is Giraffe, ask why: My wife will divorce me!

MacD37I'm with Mike Jines, I don't care to hunt antelope that weigh no more than a cartridge for a 500NE rifle!

Other than Baboon I have zero desire to shoot any monkey or ape!
I would take any of the dangerous 8, with the exception of the Black Rhino, however I would do a dart hunt for a white rhino. I wouldn't want to kill one, the poacher bastards have already taken too many of them lately! Hunting a Rhino in thick cover with a dart gun sounds exciting though, and still leaves the rhino alive.

Dave BushI want to answer this question in a different way. There are only a few African animals that I would like to shoot. The first is a cape buffalo. The second would be a hippo on land. The third would be a wildebeest. The fourth would be a gemsbok.
I have no desire to shoot an elephant. I think elephants are as close to being sentient as possible. they live in family groups. I am not against anyone doing it. I know the population has to be controlled. I just makes me sad to see such a magnificent animal go down.
I am not interested in shooting a lion mostly because I am scared shitless of lions!
