Uganda: 100 Wolves Invade Luweero
Dan Wandera
26 July 2009

Luweero — Residents of Kamira Sub-county in Luweero District have reported the invasion of the area by about 100 wolves that have so far eaten 180 goats.

Sunday Monitor has also learnt that children are now abandoning schools in fear of the beasts.

Kamira Sub-county youth councillor Lugemwa Musisi told Sunday Monitor on Monday that the wolves have eaten goats in three parishes. He said the wolves move in groups and destroy bananas, potatoes and cassava gardens which has left many residents at the brink of being hit by hunger.

Mr Musisi said school children from the villages of Kalukoma, Bukengere, Kitenderi, Kigumbya, Mazzi, Katuugo, Kabukanga and Nadangira in Kamira sub-county fear to walk to school in the morning.

Mr Juma Nsibambi, a resident of Mazzi village, said the wolves first appeared early this month at the farm of Mr John Lumala where they ate 20 goats. He said the animals which move mainly at night, later spread to other villages.

Kamira Sub-county chairman Livingstone Kategaya confirmed to Daily Monitor that residents in the parishes of Mazzi and Kabunyata had lost their goats to wolves that have also destroyed their gardens. He said he has contacted the Vermine Control Department in Luweero to come to their rescue.

Meanwhile, Mr John Ngondwe, the district vermin control officer, has told Sunday Monitor that the vermin control team sent to hunt down wolves has so far killed three wolves. He said Kamira has in the past been invaded by monkeys and baboons. "My team has shot dead some monkeys on top of the three wolves," he said.

The destructive Indian Crow was introduced to Tanzania several decades ago by courtesy of some intelligent politician and its population has now reached "epidemic levels"!
Are we to understand some similar idiot has imported wolves into Uganda or is it the the typical journalistic ignorance we frequently
encounter? (Hyaenas maybe?) rotflmo

If we see a wolf with a monkey riding it while in that part of Africa, probably should shoot the wolf first and then the Monkey?
Or shoot the wolf and let the cops give the Monkey a ticket for bringing in unauthorized wildlife?

In some areas wild dogs were called wolves.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Ethiopian wolves are really foxes and not very big either and only found in Ethiopia. I'm betting it's hyenas. Probably written by someone who wouldn't know a wolve if it bit him in the butt. Wink

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I'm betting 100:1 on hyaenas regarding the loss of goats - as far as I know, wild dogs don't hunt at night whereas Hyaenas
are more of a nocturnal predator and I have yet to come across any carnivore that will eat bananas, potatoes and cassava rotflmo
Maybe our learned Vermin Control Officer could post some pictures of this new omnivorous predator.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Maybe they are those "running dogs of the imperialist oppressors" we heard so much about in post-colonial days. Durned European left-overs.

Are these real wolves like the ones in the bible, or have they been reintroduced?
