A "hunter" on Nosler's Magnum Tv show shoots a cape buffalo. On follow up it is standing there facing him pretty close. He throws up the rifle and click! No bullets in the gun! I couldn't stop laughing. Even better he is a lefty trying to work a right handed rifle! I was laughing so hard my sides still hurt! He did finally manage to kill the buffalo.

PSmithMaybe he wanted to let the buffalo decide how it wanted to die...by shots or by laughing.

I once was driving in the passenger seat of an open car and had my rifle between my legs upright butt down. A thorn branch zipped over the bonnet and I quickly ducked and head butted the barrel of my .458, knocking myself unconscious.
Glad that was not on film.

MARK H. YOUNGHey! People get excited and like Andrew said "shit happens". My trick is to engage the safety for the follow up and then try to apply the finisher without disengaging the safety. Makes for a heck of heavy trigger pull.
The instance that stands out in my mind on these hunting TV shows is the Ruger guy on a buffalo hunt. He grabs the ejected case from the then new 375 Ruger out of the air after his initial shot on the buffalo. He sure was cool but he wounded the buffalo and they had a grueling and long follow up.

Thunder HeadYeah i thought ohh crap! This is going to get ugly, ole buff must have been pretty sick.
Did you here the PH in the back ground? He finaly told him to just calm down and load the gun!
I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

craig boddingtonMark, that was one of my shows where the guy caught the empty...I wasn't present but was in camp. Interestingly, by the end of the day the hunter was fully aware that this was a huge mistake; he mentioned it several times that evening. I'm sure every experienced hunter has done at least one strange thing in the presence of game...what you really hope for is that either there wasn't a camera present, or it was focused somewhere else! The best one I ever saw was similar to the incident mentioned at the beginning of this thread...wounded buffalo, close range, full view...the guy put his rifle down, held it between his knees, and put in ear plugs. Then raised the rifle again and shot the buffalo. Why the buffalo didn't either charge or run is totally beyond me, other than the good Lord sometimes looks after us while we do dumb things. Well, okay, that was the second best. Best was my own screwup, but I was lucky. The camera was elsewhere!
Cheers, Craig

talentrecI had never short-stroked a bolt action rifle in my life until I shot my elephant. Then I did it twice in less than two minutes. That "click" when I squeezed the trigger was louder than any cartridge going off!
Why wasn't the rifle loaded did he shoot the rifle dry when he wounded the buff?

I believe he shot it 3 or 4 times, and in pursuit he didn't remember to load it. It did look funny when he kind of "ran" towards the bull before finding out the gun was unloaded, but as others have said, shit happens. He's lucky he didn't get hurt though because the bull was only about 30 yards away standing facing him when this went down.

Wendell ReichWell, I am sure we all have some hunting scene we are glad went undocumented. While I never approached a Buff unloaded, I am sure I have pulled some boneheaded moves.
I was in a party of pig hunters sneaking up on a herd of pigs. One member said, "I will count to three, then we will shoot."
After all the shooting he was visibly annoyed yelling at everyone that they counted too fast and he didn't get a shot.
Stunned silence followed by uncontrollable laughter. In the midst of the laughter I grabbed his gun and found he had not pulled the trigger on his single shot, even though he thought he had.
Andrew, that must have been hilarious!

AnotherAZWriterMy most embarrasing moment came on my first trip to Africa. I was stalking a gemsbok on the first morning of my hunt with Fritz Hein, who is now dead.
He whispered, "Shoot that one."
I got into position, and as I did, I put my finger on the trigger and slid the safety off. The rifle was/is a Rem 700, and I had the trigger adjusted so light that it went off when I took the safety off (they will do that as I found out).
"Boom" went the rifle; dirt flew up a good 10 feet in front of the gemsbok.
The PH turned around to look at me and said, "You missed." He had a look on his face that said it was going to be a long hunt. And he certainly didn't believe me when I told him the gun went off accidentally.
I redeemed myself shortly afterwards when I shot a jackal running. Later on that hunt I shot a big kudu running. I haven't shot at running game in Africa since.

that is what you call "absolute faith" in your ph.

Tom In TennesseeHad a similar to "Shoot the Zebra on the far right " experience....my trusty PH said "shoot the Tseebee on the far right" I had the Bull in my scope but couldn't help saying "the calf?"....unfortunately we both got so tickled, it was four years later before I killed a Tseebee....and in a different country...
The only time I remember getting peeved at a PH was when I was instructed to "shoot the bull" on my first Gemsbok hunt....duh....then we both got tickled with my exasperation---we had been chasing them for 2 1/2 days trying to get a shot on the "easy" animal....he knew we had them dead to rights but I did not at the time....and we did "shoot the bull" after a bit of counting....and around campfire with some sundowners!

And I got it in the neck for making a bad call. There was another PH in camp so I took it on the chin that safari. The size of this Zebra was also reflected in my tip. Ever tried to smile when you are blue in the face?

zimFrostyLady Client, first trip to Africa.
Kudu bull stood perfectly for her. Take him was the command, but she shook her head adamant that she would not take the shot. Kudu bull ran off. When questioned, she rather tersely replied....I want a Kudu Bull, not an Eland!!!! She had to be shown a reference book before she was convinced that she had actually been looking at a Kudu not an Eland. .......she has been back several times though and still laughs about the incident.
