Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

AlpineJaeger,

I stand to be corrected if I am wrong but a spider (arachnid) is not an insect.
The repellent therefore may not work.

Something that contains Permanone 30/30 to pre-treat clothing with will be most effective. That stuff kills spiders if they touch you.

Spiders don't however seek you out to bite you like mosquitos. When they bite it's a defensive thing. So if you inadvertantly threaten one it's gonna bite no matter what you treat your clothing with.

Ladies and Gents, Big Guy is closest to a solid answer; spiders bite out of defense or feeding. They do not groom themselves (like roaches/crickets etc) therefore very few repellents will work, or kill a Spider. It takes direct application of pesticides to kill Spiders. Certain Permanone's will kill a Spider if: he comes into contact with it long enough (rarely) or, eats another insect that has been exposed to it (perethins) and dies. However, all is not lost and you are all in luck. I happen to be the inventor of the Acme Amazing Spider Killer. It is guaranteed to kill any and all Spiders or you get 200% of your money back!!!

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

I kill bugs for a living, with spiders being something I am well known for.

There are 3 types of spiders

Web builders (brown and black widows)

Web builder bites happen when you blunder into their trap. Be aware of where you put your hands or other body parts.
The black widow bites often requires medical Attn. Some species of black widows are very toxic. The toxin works on the central nervous system and are quite painful. Bites on the scrotum are common, they happen in out-houses that have not been used lately. Look before you sit!!!!!

Hunter seekers (wolf and brown recluse).

Bites happen when the spider crawls into shoes or clothing left on the floor while seeking prey. Inspect and shake out clothing and shoes and bedding. Remove clutter and reduce insect populations if possible. No prey no spiders. The toxin works on the cytoplasm that is inside of cell tissue.
The bites are often painless and may happen hours or a days before the wound appears. People with blood sugar problems, and immune problems are most likely to have problems with infection. Depending on the species the bites can be minor to life threating. 10% of those who are bitten can have wounds show up any where on their body's even with out additional bites for years.

Treating your cloths with premetherin may have some effect on hunter seek rs depending how long they are in contact with them. I don't think it would deter a black widow bite.

Ambush spiders (trapdoor)

Watch where you sit or place your hands. I know next to nothing about these.

I dont think spiders are looking to bite you, they usually bite because we stick our foot in a shoe and mash them or invade there space some how.

I have studied spiders and insects for the better part of 15 years and spider bites are often mis diagnosed, they dont bite that often

No repellent just avoid the areas where they might be.

On all of my safaris I always stuffed my boots or shoes at night to keep critters out... Spiders are another breed when it comes to killing them with some sort of insecticide...

In the ER, we certainly have lots of patients with abscesses that they don't know how they got, and blame a spider. But we also have a fair number of folks who smashed whatever was biting them, usually while in bed, and bring in the smashed brown-recluse with them.
