USFWS Issues Permits For Lions From Zimbabwe and Zambia
Safari Club International has learned from hunting industry sources in Africa that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is mailing out permits for the importation of lions taken in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

"This is good news for hunters and SCI," said SCI President Paul Babaz. "We are extremely grateful for the work that the FWS has done to recognize how hunting in these countries enhances the survival of the species."

SCI does not have all the details about the permits being issued, but will update members as soon as more is learned.

US Fish & Wildlife Service Moves Forward with Lion Import Permits

Published: October - 2017

US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) is moving forward with its reviews of lion range nations and processing of lion import permits. First, FWS made a positive enhancement finding for wild and wild-managed lions from the Republic of South Africa (RSA) for 2017 through 2019 based on the RSA lion management plan. This paves the way for issuing import permits for lions from this range nation. Despite the FWS finding, however, South African authorities are still conducting a review of all wild-managed lion properties and have requested FWS not issue permits for wild-managed lions until a full list of approved properties is completed. Captive-bred lions are not covered by this finding and remain un-importable to the US. John J. Jackson, III of Conservation Force has all the details about this development in this month's issue of World Conservation Force Bulletin, which is tucked inside each issue of The Hunting Report. Be sure to read it for the full scoop.
We also know that FWS has been working on permits for other destinations. One Hunting Report subscriber contacted us with news that an FWS agent called him for additional information about his permit application for a lion he took in Zimbabwe in 2016. "Who knows what the time frame is, but I'm glad to know something is going on," he wrote us in an email. This is also an application that Jackson has handled. Additionally, we've heard from one import broker who assists with import applications and says her clients' applications are being processed. News of more developments should be available soon. We'll issue an Email Extra bulletin as soon as something breaks on lion or elephant import permits. We have this news despite being told by a FWS spokesperson that there were no new developments to tell us about.

Zambia: One of the Du Plooy's/Muchinga Adventures lion hunters was notified by US,F&W that his permit was being processed for lion. It's really happening! John and Laura have been working very closely with John Jackson/Conservation Force and I guess it has paid off.

Let us hope that we do not over inflate quotas and resort to shooting young Lions again. This will be our last chance to prove responsible and sustainable hunting.

So, will new permits be issued, or are only older previously applied for lion already taken being issued?

Great news and nice to have a few things headed in a positive direction! One can only hope ivory imports follow...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Seems odd that they are reviewing Namibia, they have always pretty much had their stuff together.

Thought the purpose of the law was for continual review, and unlike what Obamas FWS did, tell the range st antes in advance areas that needed beefing up.

As long as they don't play games, review shouldn't scare anyone.
