Grew up hunting whitetail deer. I am somewhat ashamed to admit that until college graduation (I am 66) I probably killed more deer (head shots) with a 22 Magnum than anything.
As far as Africa goes, I have used 416 Rem (buff, zebra, ele, buff again x 3, eland, giraffeand hippo); 7mm Rem Mag on first safari (impala, civet cat, kudu, bushbuck, baboon x 3) with acceptable results. Safaris 2-4 used 300 Win Mag (impala, zebra x 2, leopard, blue wildebeest, klipspringer). More than one a few PH's that have seen my 416 and 300 (both Rifles, Inc) have told me that they thought I have "the perfect battery for all of Africa".
Nowadays I shoot my whitetail with my Rifles, Inc. 22-250 "prairie dog" rifle. No problem making head shots out to 250 yds+ (and I am not that great a shot). Pigs: 204 or 223 in an AR platform.
Birds: that's a whole nother discussion.
