Those free-divers after that size of fish are gutsy folks. Eeker

Amazing. I'm not sure how that spear works, but it obviously has some kind of float attached to it or he would not have been able to maintain contact.

Getting entangled in the line could be a fatal mistake.

That is incredible! I've been around yellowfin up to 300 lbs, but can't even imagine the power of a Blue Fin of 1,000 lbs.

Hell, 150 lb. yellowfin kick my butt!

This is no reflection on this guy's amazing feat and I claim no expertise, plus my ox wouldn't be the one being gored, but I understand that the BFT in the Atlantic is in serious danger of being fished to extinction and apparently no one is taking any real measures to prevent it. It would be a real shame to lose such a great fish.

Gato, good point and I have to agree with you, but; taking single fish such as this will have no bearing on the resource. Long line commercial fishing is the problem, and not enough is being done to control it. Harpoon fishing is actually very conservative, as you have no by-catch issues and only take specific fish. No under or over sized fish like you get with long lining, and definitely no by-catch problems.

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

Many of us have hooked and landed fish between 100 and 500 lbs on hook and line. Few of us have landed fish over 500 lbs on line. Essentially none of us have speared a fish over 500lbs. This guy, free diving (with just a snorkel, without air-tanks), got a tuna over 1000 lbs.
It's like getting a cape buffalo over fifty inches in the wild by stalking with a bow, IMHO.

Yes it is Steve. I watch Sheri Daye all the time on Spearfish Hunter and am amazed at some of the fish she spears. Having caught Cobia on rod and reel, I can't imagine what it would be like being pulled around by a 50 lb fish, let alone a Tuna of this size. There are free divers that are drowned by much, much smaller fish.

i can't see all of his gun but with a fish that size he would have to use a float line and not a reel, a float line is where there is a bouy like float on the surface with say about 75 feet of line attached to it going to the spear so when you shoot something it has to fight the float and not you. safest way of spear fishing but also hinders you as far as depth and agility dragging that line around but with a fish this size i don't think one has much choice.
