A lucky hunt at La Pampa Province

Carlos Alberto MaciasA lucky hunt at La Pampa Province
Running before the menacing rains of the last weekend, I was able to accomplish a difficult task: with only two days to spare, guiding a hunter to a trophy boar. From my usual scouting and informants I knew that some very large tracks have been found in the Quehué area, near the center of La Pampa. The boar was visiting the corpse of a dead cow near a certain waterhole. Unfortunately when we reached the place, the hog had dissapeared from that ranch and was seen drinking in the nights from other pools. Selecting one on the verge of a "salitral" (a salt marsh) we climbed a large blind and waited....and waited, under the full moon of a splendid but very cold night. After some hours I saw an enormous shadow entering the area from the left, but with equal and incredible swiftness it backpedaled and was again invisible to us. Some tense 10 minutes afterwards I could detect the big and cautious hog under the shadows of a nearby tree and pointed it to Jose Luis, my customer and good friend. Obviously the beast could flee in any moment, so he aimed quickly his trusted Smith and Wesson in 300 Winnie and put a Federal 180 grainer in the right spot.
That some night, after the congratulations
and all the toasts and good wine, to my ashtonishment the landowner asked us if we could help him in a culling operation. He has a herd of fallow deer and needed to put two stags to rest.
Jumping to the opportunity, we of course thanked him, thinking in an easy hunt. Not to happen, because the area is full of brush and trees, and locating the herd was quite a chore, even with the aid of some ranch hands. Eventually Jose Luis made two wonderful running shots and that was that. The tally was very good: two boars (I shot a small one for the meat) and two fallow stags (non trophy animals).
Oh well, some times the Godess Diana smiles to me.

Two happy fellows (I´m the one with the Basque hat)

billinthewildWonderful and great photos. Congratulations to
Jose Luis.

Is he as tough as our Joe Lewis was? The goddess looks for hunters who work hard and then she blesses them with success.

Carlos Alberto MaciasSteve and Bill: thanks for your kind comments We were in truth hard pressed because the day after it rained hard for many hours, making our return to Buenos Aires very difficult. And Bill, your Scottish stag is an absolute beauty.
