This author talks about going to the Gran Chaco, but it sounds like he spent most of the story describing Santa Fe and Parana' area, which is quite far to the east of the Gran Chaco. A hunting trip into the Formosa, Chaco or Salta Provinces for buffalo, wild cattle (cebus), and peccary, with a chance of photographing tapirs and placing some baits to photo jaguars would be an interesting trip indeed. A VERY close friend of mine has just bought a farm up there (Gran Chaco)and the farmer next to him showed him three jaguars skins very big that he has taken this year. He told me that he has on his farm one of the few natural water holes in the area and that you can see fresh tapir tracks everywhere !!!!!! So guess what I am planning ????? L

Caspar Whitney de author of the Trail of the jaguar, describes Santa Fé and Paraná in the first decade of the year 1900, in that time the Gran Chaco began no farther than 50 miles north from Santa Fé we can also say that the last Chaná - Timbúes Indian chief was subdued in the year +/-1925 in San Javier not farther than 90 miles from Santa Fe city, this comments are just to have an idea of the wilderness of this place. Steven (Sgraves155), you have visited both cities, beautiful as well, can you imagine what it was 100 years ago? Hard to overcame, at least for me that leave so close to this place. Now in the present days, we will have to move 800 miles up north to find our Gran Chaco, and it will be a great expedition as well, many species are protected but may be we can captured some of them in the film of the photographic camera! When I read these nice old hunting reports (thanks Nickudu for sharing them) I am once more convinced that many of us ought to have been born 100 years ago, am I right? Willy

Yes, make that 120/130 years....imagine yourself doing a pass at the Kilimanjaro elephant or the tigress of Chowgarh. Oh well, back to the office

As some readers may see, Willie and I are beginning to plan just such a trip into the Gran Chaco for next year. He is beginning to arrange the trip, which will include trucking supplies and arranging for horses. We are hoping for good buffalo and cebu, peccary and hogs, maybe puma, and photographing tapirs and (most hopefully) jaguars. Fishing and bird watching shall be included also. I have been reading Theodore Roosevelt's book "Through the Brazilian Wilderness" and suspect that the Gran Chaco is still much like he describes. GoogleEarth shows the western Formosa, Chaco, and Salta provinces to be very remote. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Ryan "Those who vote decide nothing.
