Juan,

When a dog gets cut like that, do you stitch the wound closed or use cyanoacrylates?

GeorgeS, I would bet that Juan uses absorbable sutures to stitch them back. Another very quick way would be to use a staple gun like we use for skin or scalp lacerations in the ER/OR. I've never used the glue for large wounds. If a dog is dis-embowelled and still alive, he may have his innards put back inside, a shirt or towel wrapped around him, and carried to the vet for surgery.

Juan,

I take it Iki is doing fine? How are the dogs healing up? Post a picture, if you have time, on how those wounds are looking. I am just interested to see how the sugar and antibiotics have brought them along over the week+ since the injuries.

Kind regards,
Mary

Mary all the dogs are perfect ,we only used a dosis of atb in only one dog of the 4 injured ,we used only sugar ,i cannot take photos because the dogs are at la patagonia and im in Cordoba ,but trust me this is an old treatment known by most of the surgeons ,i believe you can find about using sugar in infections in the web ,i use a lot to close infections of the abdominal wall ,with great results ,try it..and tell me .Juan

Juan,

Good to hear all the dogs are doing well. I did research on the sugar treatments when you first mentioned them. I, myself, also prefer 'old' remedies over some modern pharmacuticals. Thank you for sharing the info.

Kind regards,
Mary

A common treatment used for us is sugar-dine, which is simply iodine or betadine and sugar mixed into a paste and applied to a wound.

Ann,

Don't know how I had never heard of this. Guess I have been away from the veterinary medical field for too long!

We had used granulex and gentian violet for such wounds. I think the granulex had a similar makeup as the sugar/betadine did.

Sugar works by changing the PH of the area treated ,besides that, the consisntence of sugar ,facilitates the growing of the tissues.

Honey has been used as a wound dressing for thousands of years. And very successfully too ! Has antibiotic properties, increases the flow of leucocytes [speeds healing] and a scab does not form on the wound .I've used it for years [on me !] .I don't know how sugar compares.

Jaun--- I am still jealous of your natural and free lifestyle in the bush. I wish my daughter and wife were able to experience this as you do and as I did in my youth. Although I live in a town of only 1,000 people, we are just a stones throw away from towns 40,000. Keep in touch. I love to hear and see how it is for you in your Country.
