That is the best looking rifle I have ever seen. Congratulations to all those involved. I can't afford to participate in the raffle, but hope you get all the support you need.

That rifle is immaculate. Incredible.

Best of Luck

chic,

If you get close to say 300 tickets or in any case just need a few more tickets purchased let me know and I'll pick up the slack

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

We are now at 240 tickets. If you have sent a check or mo and it should be here by now, you might check the list above. Sales have been brisk lately, I hope it keeps up. Thanks for all those who have bought tickets.

I was hoping for 400 tickets sold but now I am looking at 300 unless the sales picks up some steam. At present I am looking at ending near Feb 15. It is beneficial to have an full 100 number of tickets, eg. 200, 300 or 400. In that way there are not any gaps in the drawing. A small number of gaps (non assigned numbers), spread among all the 100's, can work okay but it may require an additional day if the winning # happened to hit the gap. I hope I am not confusing anyone.

Let me explain further (or confuse more). If we ended up selling 297 tickets, I would assign 99 to each 100 group and there would be a non assigned number that may win. In that case we would go on one more day and hopefully we would have a winner.

What would happen if, for example, 307 tickets were sold? Would you keep it open until 400 sold or would you have to cut it off at exact round numbers?

Bulldog,
I am having to face that issue right now. I am at 278 tickets with promises that just might bring the total to over 300. I had set a deadline of Feb 15th. The original goal was 400 and as the sales of tickets began to slow down I considered stopping at 300 and I was concerned about even getting there. I would like to get as many tickets for Monika as i can and if the total comes to 380 for instance, we can still deal with that. You could distribute the tickets evenly in the 100's ranges 95 in each. You would have 5 empty spaces but if the last number hit on that one, then you could just do it one more day to get a number that is assigned. I hope I am making this clear. If you happen to be in a tens unit that only has 9 numbers then your odds are higher than those who are not but the odds of hitting your tens unit is the same for everyone. I am confused now.

And yes it is best to be at an even 100.

I was just thinking again and to make it fair, the odds need to be the same for each unit of tens or 100s. It needs some more thought.

If you have 400 tickets, your odds of winning should be 1 in 400. That is readily understandable. You can look at the odds in a different manner and arrive at the same result. To be chosen by the 100's group, for example 1 to 100, 101 to 200, 201 to 300 and 301 to 400, and you only have one ticket, the odds are 1 in 4. To then be chosen for the tens units, 1 to 10, 11 to 20 and so on, the odds are one in 10 and the odds are the same to be chosen in the ones group. So if you mulitply 4 times 10 times 10 you arrive at 400 again. But now if you end up in a group that has only 9 names in it, your odds become 1 in 360. So it is not a small matter and to me, although I do not have a ticket, it is not acceptable.

It would work with 360 tickets, or 320 because we could have the same number of people in each tens unit.

I am just asking a simple question I have wondered from Day 1, so please no one lynch me over this.

Why the hell does it have to be so complicated? WHy not run it just like every other fund raising raffle where people buy tickets, the stub goes in a container, and someone picks a stub without looking. It works for hundreds of thousands of fundraising raffles across the US every year.

THe surrent method is some sort of CHinese fire drill on acid. I read th emethod several times, still don't have a clue how it works, and am scratching my head as to why something so simple has become so complicated. Confused

For the Ottmar rifle there will be no public gathering for a drawing. With the drawing setup the way Chic wants to do it there will be no doubt as to who won it and how they were picked. I agree, it's a little complicated but in the end it's a pretty fair way to pick a winner. If I win I'm counting on someone telling me I did Big Grin

On the Silver-Lining Scholarship Rifle, it will be drawn in public gathering so the complicated system won't be necessary.

Marc,
Terry nailed the reason. I guess I could pull the ticket. HEY I WON!!! Well I am not buying a ticket even if the outcome is beyond my control. But let me explain further. Lets assume we have 400 tickets sold. Everyone has been assigned a number for each ticket they purchased and the numbers will appear on line for all to see. On a designated day we look at the unit number(the one just to the right of the decimal point) on the Dow Jones average closing. If the number is a 1 or a 5 then the one hundred group, ie. tickets 1 through 100 will be in for the remainder of the drawing. The rest of you are out of it. If the number is a 2 or a 6 then it is the 200 group, if it is a 3 or a 7 then it is the 3 hundred group and if it is a 4 or an 8 it is the 400 group. If it is a 9 or a 0 then we have to go another day. If we have a good number on day one then on the next day we will look for the tens group and that will just be the number and it will leave us with just ten people. The last day will give us a winner.

This works great if we have 300 or 400 tickets. If we do not then we have to make it fair for everyone involved and that is why it would be at say 320, 360 or 400. With 320 each group of ten would only have 8 names in it and you would have 2 blanks. With 360 we would have 9 in each to with one blank. Might have to go one day more but it will have the same odds for everyone.

BTW, I wanted to tell all of you a story about Maurice.

I went to the funeral and the gathering later in the small farming town was full of townspeople and they all brought their favorite dishes for a potluck. I was sitting with Maurice's "gun" friends and Monika came by and told us a wonderful story. Maurice had been forbidden by his doctor from eating any salty foods in his later years. He loved dill pickles. He asked Monika to see if his doc would mind if he had a few and of course the doctor said it would be fine. Monika bought Maurice a real big jar of those mega pickles you see in deli's. In his last weeks he ate them all. Then he told Monika that he had one last wish. His remains were to be buried on the family farm and he asked her to bury his ashes in the pickle jar. It was done just as he asked.

I know a couple members have offered to help make up the difference to get an even 100 outcome. Since we've spilled over 300 already, with the promisses you already have, how close to 400 do you think you'll get?

If it helps get to 400, I could chip in for another 5 or 10 tickets.

I'm sure others could as well, and some have already said that they would.

What do you think is the "best" way to handle it?

That is a wonderful offer and I will certainly welcome any additional sales. Right now it is at 324 tickets and I just opened this to update the list. With the promises I have received lately, it will soon be over 330. I had set a deadline of February 15th for a potential cutoff but it needs to be at 360 by then or 400. I think if we wait until it nears the deadline we could make an assesment at that time. If we are near 360 it will be an easier task. If it comes near 360 and it is near the 15th of Feb, I will likely cut it off. With 360 we will put 9 names in each tens unit so it will be equal for everyone.

Again thank you for your thoughtful offer.

Chic, I would cut this off at 400, and keep a close watch of arrivals... and then cut it off..

if we get close, let me know, and I'll though in $100 to get to the 400 mark

That would be just great if we can reach 400. Monika moved and bought a home in Austin and taxes are killing her. She has sold that home and is moving into a smaller one and money is a big issue with her. She is a very nice lady and has told me to thank all of you for what you have done.

Probably been said in other places but I'd like to say how admirable it is of the artisans who contributed their efforts toward the final rifle and, of course, to the parts donors as well.

I bought 5 but would buy some more if necessary, mostly because of the noble efforts involved. Since money to the widow is the object, it seems to me we should be able to get to 500, blowing past 400, in a couple of weeks if the word is spread at Reno and people dig a little deeper.

As of today the ticket sales are at 375 tickets. I would like to go beyond 400 but at the beginning I said we would limit the sales to 400. I really don't think it is fair to those who bought tickets based on the 400 to 1 odds. So I feel it is best to leave it at 400. Your hearts are sure in the right place though.

Chic,

Based on the way sales are picking up, it looks like we'll hit 400 with no problem.

However, if it gets right down to the wire and you're 5 or 10 short, put me down for 5 or 10 more tickets and PM me or put it up here and I'll shoot you another check for 5 or 10 more tickets.

I also like the idea of giving others a chance who haven't gotten in yet, but I don't want to see you short at the last minute.

Thanks for putting this whole thing together for a good cause.

I will assign numbers to those who have participated and post them on Monday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we will use the closing Dow Jones average of those days to determine the winning number.

I would do it sooner but I am going traveling to Chicago on Thursday and will be back on Sunday.

Jeffe, a number of 0 or 4 would designate the first set of 100 (1 to 100), a 1 or a 5 would designate the next (101 to 200), 2 or 6 would designate the next set (201 to 300) and 3 or 7 would designate the last set (301 to 400). So there are only two numbers, 8 and 9 that would send us on to another day to start.

snake, the numbers will be posted on Monday. My trip to Chicago has been derailed by snow bound Mountain passes being closed so I will likely have it together sooner.

Will do Butch, good luck. Think of it as an engine with the distributor cap off. It has ten cylinders. If you crank the engine and look at which cylinder it is pointing to it would determine what the hundreds group will have the winning ticket. Only we only have 4 groups of 100. So we use two numbers for each group of 100 and in that way we have better chance of getting a winning group the first day. If it did land on a cylinder that was not assigned to a set of 100 then we would have to go at least one more day. The first day will eliminate 300 numbers leaving us with just a set of 100.

I figured I could put it in a way you could get your mind around it. Smiler

You're not alone Butch. If I recall correctly, I knocked my 7th period math teacher on his ass and hitch hiked into town to see the Marine Corps recruiter. Neither move was particularly scholarly, but I'm working through it. Big Grin
