I've only installed one and the owner said it worked very well.

I really don't like them as their contours are heavy for me......just too much meat at the muzzle for a light weight sporter and the length is 21" when some folks would prefer a bit longer.

Yes, they have longer barrels too but then the muzzle is larger again.

The only ones with a nice #1 contour is for small thread Mausers.

I have a few and they are all very good shooters. one ss heavy barrel in 308 shoots 5 shot 1/2" groups and has no fouling.
the only complaint was the finish is a little rough.

used several, installed a couple more, and a friend has installed ALOT of them.... if MOA or so is your definition of a good hunting rifle, they are fine...

the one in my 416 ar is 1/3 MOA, a frickin laser beam

and yeah, they are a bit heavy, generally 1 full step to much

I've used several of them and they shot fine, no real tackdrivers, but no clunkers either.

I know one thing. You can blue them with Oxpho Blue cream and they will look better than most factory rifles.

Used a A&B barrel on a barrel swap in 35 Whelen on a Savage and am pleased with its performance so far. I found this barrel to be no rougher than the factory Savage barrels if that tells you anything. Good barrel for the price and mine shoots good. Groups run 1.25 are less consisently.

My brother has one in .300 WM that was installed on a Mark X action. It is a bit heavy and could have probably been cut down a little bit. But it shoots very well with his loads (I don't know what they are) and he is happy with it as a hunting rifle.

I don't know that this is correct, but it is the way I view barrels:

All makers make "hummers", and all makers turn out "bummers" too.

The top makers (both reputation and prices) make maybe 3% hummers, and maybe 3% bummers. All the rest of their production (94%) are good, normal, reliable MOA or less barrels as could be turned out by any maker.

The least expensive barrel makers still make 1% or 2% hummers, and maybe 5% or 6% bummers. All the rest of their production (92%) are good, normal barrels as could be turned out by any maker.

Given, everyone can substitute their own % estimates for the numbers I have used above, and be just as likely correct. My point is simply that I believe most of the time barrels are pretty much similar in quality. It is at the "hummer" and "bummer" ends of the probability curve that name and price really seem to count these days. High price = better chance of a "hummer" and less chance of a "bummer".

That said, except on competition rifles, I have no problem trying just about any brand on the market if the rifle's owner or I get a good enough deal on it.

I've used a half dozen or so A&B barrels. They might be a bit on the rough side as far as finish goes, but I have yet to get a "bummer" in the accuracy department.

Also I have 3 AB barrels that are just fine and the degree of cleaning they require is FAR less than any of my Savage made rifles and I have 5 of those. sofaroger

Last I knew midway is just a distributer, not a barrel maker.
Last time I went to green mountain over in NH they had piles of barrels going into A&B boxes on their way to Midway. I bought a few over-runs in the standard contours. They make good barrels, I think others have made them in the past, some so-so, but green mountain makes a good tube. It's no big secret, call them and they'll tell you they make them for Midway, NEF and others. They had a stack of the most beautifull Thompson barrels( with fins) I've ever seen. They can do very nice work there.

I've used them and found them to shoot okay, but their contours are clubby - yuck! How hard could it be to cut a nice concave radius?

Although I imagine there is a thought behind their radii - easy to inlet a stock for them.

Shaw did make them for A&B at one time. I was told that by Midway over the phone. Who they source them to these days is beyond me because the one experience I had with A&B was not good. If they are being made by a better manfacturer these days then good for the consumer.

Hmm,
like outers, midway was been "quietly" buying up brands, names, and manf. capabilities..

under the name of batternfeldtechnologies

http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/index.html

the COMPANIES that larry has include

caldwell, fajen, frankford arsenal (i think they actually started this one) Miloes gilbert, past, tipton, wheeler, and ADAMS AND BENNETT

while some/part/all of the manfuactoring of these products may be outsourced (who doesn't?) to other companies, midway provides the spec and quality requirements. A whole lot like a military rifle being made by 4 different contractors.. but it's not a WINCHESTER rifle when the enfield says W

Cloudy? could be..

Jeff,

I used to work for a lighting company and all the products we sold with OUR name on them were made for us by someone else.

Also, some companies are founded mostly for the tax benefits they can provide.

Like I say, regardless of WHO makes the barrels for A&B now or whether they themselves make them, I was told directly by Midway years ago that Shaw was making them at THAT time. There were numerous magazine articles way back then that mentioned this fact too.

You know, Jeff. when you make contradictory statments like this and ware the title of moderator, people think you are an authority and you are right.

A "cloudy? could be" retraction is rather weak compared to your original statement. Frownerroger

As far as I know, the only place one can get an A&B branded barrel is thru Midway.....regardless of who makes them.

Personally, I could care less who makes them because If I want an A&B I have to go to Midway!

It's surprising to see the number of positive comments on this thread as most threads about A&B barrels are quite mixed.

A local friend uses them a lot and is very satisfied with them.....they are just too heavy for me!

All they really need is a little bit of contouring right at the transision point to make them look a lot better and also to take a few ounces off. They don't need to be recontoured the whole way. I would think any guy that is pretty talented with a lathe, such as yourself Vapodod, could very easily do what needs done to make them look real nice.

My 35 Whelen was put together with a A&B barrel. It shoots very well. Around an inch at 100.
My smith is of the opinion that with modern C&C macinery and decent steel to start with a trained monkey can build a good barrel these days.
That being said , he prefers a Douglas just beacuse of a good relationship with them.
I wish A&B made barrels in 9.3X62.
MK 10 actions are still cheap and easy to find around here.
I know of one I can get (its a daily) for about 300.00. In 300 win mag.
I am thinking of making a 358 Norma on it or a 416 taylor.
If I go taylor I,ll probably use an A&B.
But An ER shaw pre threded and chamberd barrel is only 150.00.
If I were going with somthing like a .257 Roberts I might go a differnt rout.
But more beacuse of weight than acuracy...tj3006
