i want to change the stock on the 45-70 guide gun to better take the recoil of larger faster bullets. i know because the angle of the stock is bad for recoil, any recomendations.....

You might give Great American Gunstocks a try..have heard both good and bad here on the forum about them. Also there is a company called Treebone Carving that I beleive offers Marlin stocks. I don't like fiberglass (personal reasons) or kevlar stocks, but someone like Brown Precision or McMillan might offer one. Hope this helps.

Wild West is selling a composite stock of some sort....haven't seen one in the flesh.

By chance have you tried shooting one with a Decelerator pad on it?? A friend installed one on his, and while I never found the recoil objectionable in the first place, it DID make a world of difference.

A good stock to look for would be one with a high comb.
That way when the rifle recoils back, the stock moves away from your face and will not bite you.

Try Treebone Carving. He makes several different patterns for the Marlin. A buddy of mine installed a Treebone that had a larger recoil pad footprint and hat helped a bunch.

The standard stock on the marlin will down right maim you at times......................I have shot mine from the ute window a few times at game and with no where for your body to and 405 gr at 1800 fps it can draw tears, I to would liketo add a good pad to the back of mine. The 405's are in a whole different leauge than 300gr weight bullets from the 45/70.

just for fun, a fella could try to tip the heel of the stock -- the top round end -- forward about 3/16 of an inch... where the recoil pad is less then vertical to the bore....

this should take a little of the flip up out.
