What is the largest case the Savage 99 can fit? It can fit the 284 so was wondering how big can it go rim size and casehead size. Thanks! Was thinking a 410-284 would be cool on the 99. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Was thinking the stubby 405 bullets on the soon to be 410 B&M would be cool. The 99 has a 2.8"ish mag right? 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

There is more than that to consider. The action is made with a slight taper and the rotary magazine cannot accommodate just any 2.8" ammunition. Original chamberings included 243, 250 Sav, 300 Sav, 308, and 358 so I would think anything within those bounds would be easy. Perhaps, 260, 7mm-08, 9.3-08 etc. A 375-08 might be too big or it might not. Rimmed cartridges it was chamber for included 22 Sav Hi Power, 25-35, 30-30, 303 Sav, 32-40, 38-55, and 375 Win. Again, I think you'd be fine with anything similar. It was also offered in .284 Win and .410 shotgun. Those would bring some other possibilities to the table but you would have to start with the correct magazine. Since several pistols have been offered in .410/45 colt, maybe there is something you could do there if you got a .410 gun to start with and then rebarreled it. Maybe there is some sort of magic that can be done with the magazine. I suggest you ask the guy I told you about. .

So maybe a 410-284 might be the largest chambering for shooting 405 bullets 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

While the 99 did at one time offer a .410 barrel the .410 shell needed to be single loaded. The rotary magazine was never used for feeding the .410 shell.

The 99's that were chambered in .284 were a beast unto themselves. Changing any old 99 over to a .284-based cartridge requires more than just swapping out the rotor (which is unique to the .284 and nearly imposible to find, not to mention altering said rotor to handle a necked-up wildcat). There were differences in the cartridge stops too. Most of them can be made to interchange fairly well between a wide range of calibers, but not the .284. It's unique too. More sundry alterations to the receiver and parts swaps are necessary, making a .284-based conversion a very taxing (and expensive) operation. More than a couple dyed-in-the-wool Savage guys gave up in disgust while attempting the conversion. It's better to find an original 99 in .284 and go from there, but be forewarned they are very rare (and pricey).

I've got a couple of detachable .284 magazines for the 99c that I haven't gotten around to selling yet should the need arise though the cost is a bit dear.

I used to have a 99C in .308 that I was going to make into a 35-284 but traded the rifle and mags before I got to it. I think that it was M L McPherson who chronicled doing a 35-284 on a spool mag 99. He shows in his book how the spool was modified. I think there was also a 416 cal version. You need to start with either the C (clip) version or a later one that would take the 308 win. The early actions don't have the mag length required if I remember correctly. Be aware that the .284 mags usally bring a premium price.

It makes more sense to go .410 for the lower impact velocity envelope of the 405 win and 450/400 bullets over the tougher 416 bullets. Great info guys. It seems the BLR might be the better choice for this idea but the 99 is just cooler. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S.
